Kabanata 27: Ang Prayle at Ang Pilipino

• Napakinggan ni Padre Fernandez ang sinasabi ni Isagani habang nag-uusap sa kanyang mg

kaibigan
• Nilapit si Isagani ng isang capista na sinabi na tinawag si Isagani ni Padre Fernandez
• Isagani admires Padre Fernandez.
• When Isagani arrived, Padre Fernandez told him he heard their conversation and admires
the young men for having their own beliefs
• Padre Fernandez called Isagani to tell him that they have the right to think what they want,
because hindi sila mga aral ng mga prayle, ngayong taon lang sila naging aral nila.

• Padre Fernandez: He has never seen a student that has had enough courage to say what he
thinks because priests are always praised but then talk badly about them behind their
backs.
• Isagani: Its because people who speak up are punished. So who would want to do that?
• Padre Fernandez: I always call you in class, because I admire you.
• Isagani: He also admires PF
• Padre Fernandez : Let’s talk not as a teacher and a student, but as equals.
• Asks what I wants from the prayle
• Isagani: Wants them to their duties
• PF: What are their duties towards the Filipinos
• I: They should teach Filipinos to be marangal, matalino, mabait, dakila, and tapat
• I: Are you guys fulfilling that?
• PF: Yes we are
• I: Padre Fernandez Is, but the others do not. Instead they limit education at sila ang rason
sa pagkawalan ng kasiyahan
• They don’t like it because the friars arent teaching properly
• PF: Educations is only for those who deserve it ( may karapat dapat ) at hindi sa mga
mahina at may masamang asal( without morality )
• I: Bakit may mga taong mahina?
• PF: Because It is inherited from family
• I: * disagrees* It is because the friars made them that way ( sila ay may gawa )
• I: if the students are mahina, who has the sala? The students or the ones teaching them?
• I: Its like a sculptor who cant produce anything good
• PF: maybe his material is bad, or he steals money and wastes time
• I: If he knows he has bad material, why does he continue ? He’s even wasting time. He’ll fail
even more
• PF felt he lost and to his filipino student
• PF: Ipinapataw nila ang lahat sa prayle but they’re just following the government
• They could be kicked out by the people or government, so just follow the govt
• Naglalayo sila sa usapan
• I: Friars should help students and not limit education
• PF: Iyan ay paghiling sa amin na kami ay magpatiwakal ( suicide )
• I: no it isnt, we will stop what we are trying to do ( plans ), if our teachers will change
• PF: is there smth you don’t like about me?
• I: They are not talking about themselves ( sarili ) but of society ( kalahatan )
• I: You want to teach us because we are ignorant, but you limit education because we are
also ignorant.

• PF: If you show that you want to become proper, and educated then surely there will be
change ( pagbabago ) ng mga guro
• I: Oh so We change first because nasa Amin ang kasiraan. What will we get if we go first?
• PF: this convo isn’t a waste, it will reach my other friars, and there might be change, but
they might not believe there is someone like you
• I: I also think my friends might not believe there is a priest like you
• Isagani left; smn might ask where he’s going ( Pamahalaang Sibil )
• Padre Fernandez cried
• He envies those who taught Isagani
• But those Jesuits disowned him when he was arrested

Kabanata 28: Mga Katatakutan

• Ben Zayb is happy because what he wrote on the newspaper is confirmed by the posters
( paskin ); that education is bad
• Even the Chinese are scared and no one goes to Quiroga’s bazaar
• He doesn’t let strange indios enter
• Quiroga goes to Simoun’s house to know if they will execute the plan about the weapons
that they hid with Simoun
• Simoun doesn’t want to see him
• Quiroga goes to Don Custodio to ask how to protect his store
• Don Custodio doesn’t want to see him
• 4pm, rumors that students have deals with tulisan ( nakipagsabwatan sa mga tulisan sa San
Mateo )
• Gusto ni Kapitan Heneral na takutin ang mga mag-aaral
• Kapitan Tiago panics when Basilio is caught and they took B’s papers and books
• Padre Irene visited Kapitan Tiago, to tell him the news, but Kapitan Tiago collapses and dies
• Padre Irene panics and leaves, leaving Tiago’s dead body on the floor

1.) Ppl having baptism; someone pulls out sword and people become scared thinking its a
revolution
2.) Neighbors see 2 people burying weapons ( sandata ) and they were killed
3,) Someone sees a shadow in his house thinking its a student and shoots it but its a guard
4.) A guard shoots a deaf man and pig in dulambayan because the man couldn’t hear and
respond to his calls
5.) In a store, they’re talking about Tadeo having utang; Isagani being arrested; and Paulita
who will be sad and marry a spaniard instead

• In the silversmith’s house, they talk about what happen and who put the posters ( maybe
Padre Salvi or Quiroga )
• Placido came with castillero and they said Simoun is sick
• They feel that someone is listening to them
• They are worried they are gonna die since the revolution is failing

• Ben Zayb is walking and sees the body of a dead Indian woman
• Thinks about writing an article about it
• Next day, he writes something else instead of that

Kabanata 29: Pagpanaw ni Kapitan Tiago

• Kapitan Tiago’s funeral, he died without going to confession
• Padre Irene is in charge of his will ( tagapagpaganap ng kanyang huling habilin )
• He gave part of his wealth to the convent in Santa Clara, some to the Pope, some to the
Arsobispo, and some to the korporasyon ng prayle
• He decided not to give Basilio 25 pesos because he’s ungrateful ( masamang inasal nitong
huling araw )
• But Padre Irene gave Basilio from his own money
• Rumors going around that before dying, the nuns saw kapitan Tiago in the convent
• Tiago brought his fighting cock, and his pipe for opium
• The talk about if Tiago will have a cockfight with San Pedro and how that will work
• Another group ( pangkat ) talks about anong damit suotin ng patay
• Kapitan Tinong wants him to wear damit- Franciscano because a friar gave it to him after he
donated money
• Isang mananahi said to let him wear prak since that how the nuns saw him
• Padre Irene said it can be any suit because hindi tumingin ang Diyos sa damit
• Tiago’s ceremony went well and three friars celebrated.
• Some people were even jealous at how nice the ceremony was.

SUMMARY 2 KABANATA 27-29 ( MARIELLE )

- Narinig ni Padre Fernandez and mga sinasabi ni Isagani sa mga kaibigan niya.
- Pinatawag niya sa capista si Isagani.
- Pinag usapan nila ang nangyari sa hapunan kagabi at nirerecognize ni Padre Fernandez ang
karapatan ni Isagani na sabihin ang nais niya.
- Humanga si Padre Fernandez sa lakas ng loob at determinasyon ni Isagani na sabihin ang
mga saloobin niya.
- Kinutya niya ang iba na mabait sa harap ngunit masama kung nakatalikod na ang mga
prayle.
- Pero sinabi ni Isagani na tinuro lamang sila ng mga prayle. kinukuha ng mga prayle ang mga
karapatan nilang magsalita ng malaya kaya hindi na nila nasasabi ang tunay na iniisip nila.
- Gusto ni Isagani na tuparin ng mga prayle ang mga tunkulin nila na maglikha ng mabuting
Pilipino na malusog din.
- Sinabi ni Padre Fernandez na mabigat na paratang ang mga sinasabi ni Isagani. Tumutupad
lamang ang mga prayle sa pamahalaan.
- Gusto lamang ni Isagani na huwag hadlangan ng prayle ang edukasyon ng pilipino pero
mahirap ang hinihingi niya.
- Sinabi ni Padre Fernandez na mas mabuti nalang maging magsasaka ang mga estudyante
dahil wala namang pumipilit sa kanilang mag aral. pero sinabi ni Isagani na pinipilit silang
magaral dahil kinukutya sila at pinapahiya. Kailangan nilang patunayan na kaya nilang
tumayo sa sarili nilang paa.
- Pinutol na ni Padre Fernandez ang usapan at nangakong gagawin niya ang lahat para
ipaintindi sa mga prayle ang mga sinasabi ni isagani. ganon din ang pangako ni isagani.
- Akala ni Padre Fernandez na pupunta siya sa Civil Govt ngunit nabilanggo na pala si Isagani
dahil sa mga Hesuswita.

- May isang paskin na sumangayon sa sinabi ni Ben Zayb sa isang dyaryo na nakakasama sa
Pilipinas ang pagpaparal ng mg bata.
- Maraming tao ang nawalang ng gana at naging tensyonado dahil sa paskin.
- Di sumipot ang mga prayle sa tindahan ni quiroga, hindi na niya pinapapasok ang kung sino
sinong indiyo
- Pumunta si quiroga sa bahay ni simoun para magtanong sa plano tunkol sa mga armas pero
may sakit ito kaya hindi siya nagpakita
- Pumunta siya sa bahay ni don custodio pero ayaw niyang maabala.
- Maraming balita ang kumalat: sumali ang mga estudyante sa tulisan ng san mateo. Na udyok
ang kapitan heneral na takutin ang mg pilibustero.
- Nang hulihin si basilio at na search ang bahay niya, sobrang natakot si kaptan tiyago na
kasama si padre irene. Dahil sa takot, pumanaw si kt at natakot si pi kaya tumakbo siya.
- Maraming kaguluhan ang naganap
- Neighbors find two people burying shotguns, and they get into a fight.
- Someone sees a shadow near his house in Ermita and shoots it, thinking it’s a student. It
turns out to be a veteran guard. The witnesses bury the body of the veteran guard.
- In Dulumbayan, a guard shoots a pig and a deaf old man by accident, who did not hear him
when he asked who was there.
- In a confectionary shop, people speculate: one asks about tadeo, who owes her money.
There’s a rumor that Tadeo was shot.
- There are rumors that Isagani surrendered himself and that Paulita Gomez will probably
marry a Spaniard. 
- Sa bahay na tinutuluyan ni Placido, iniisip ng mga tao na si Padre Salvi o si Quiroga ang may
gawa sa kaguluhan.
- Dumating ang kastilyero at pinaalam niya sa lahat na may sakit si simoun.
- May nakita si ben zayb na 2 taga indiya na namatay ngunit hindi siya sumulat tunkol dito.
Sumulat siya tinkol sa isang bagyo sa America.

- Gaganap ang libing ni Kapitan Tiyago sa bahay niya. Namatay si Kapitan Tiyago nang hindi
nangungupisal pero hindi ito pinansin ni Padre Irene.
- Iniwan ni Kapitan Tiyago kay Padre Irene ang kanyang huling habilin. May mga iniwan siya
sa kumbento ni Sta.Clara, sa arsobispo , sa ibang prayle, at maliit na perawala para kay
Basilio. Ngunit kinuha ni Padre Irene ang dapat para kay Basilio.
- Nagkukuwento ang mga tao sa isang himala na may mongha sa Sta. Clara na nakakita kay
Kapitan Tiyago. Iniligtas daw si Kapitan Tiyago ng kanyang pagpunta sa misa.
- The guests say that now, Kapitan Tiyago is cockfighting against St. Peter in heaven. Don
Primitivo says no one would lose because no one fights in heaven. Martin Aristorenas

 disagrees and says it would be a tie instead. Don primitivo says Martin Aristorenas is going
to hell. Martin aristorenas then gets scared.
- Kapitan Tinong wants to to dress Kapitan Tiyago in franciscan attire, or fancy attire but
Padre Irene says capitan tiago will just wear any of his old suits because God care about
whatever he’s wearing. Three friars officiate the funeral rites. Dona Patrocinio, Kapitan
Tiyago’s rival, feels jealous and wants to die so she can have a better funeral.
