CHAPTER 1

FESTO FLUIDSIM PNEUMATIC AND HYDRAULIC SOFTWARE

OVERVIEW
Fluidsim is a software package that can be used for simulation, creation and study of pneumatic
and hydraulics. The tool can also be used for designing and testing virtual circuits. All the functions in
this program are nicely combined and are easily accessible.

This comprehensive simulation tool is combined with a very interactive circuit editor that has
detailed information about all the components. Sectional view animations and videos are also
available. This capability of Fluissim makes it perfect for tutorials and creating lessons. The tool can
be used for preparation and as a self study tool. All you need to do is to define the input configuration
of fluids and scene geometry then a fluid simulator evolves the motion of the fluid with the use of
Euler’s equations as well as Navier-Stokes equations. These equations describe the physics of the
fluid.

FestoFluidsim Pneumatic and Hydraulic provides a wide range of possibilities of for

communication between other software products via DDE and OPD. The tool can contain cutaway
animations and drawings of cylinders, valves and flow control devices. Drag and drop feature is also
supported which will allow you to draw simple circuits.

 Below are some noticeable features which you’ll experience after FestoFluidsim
Pneumatic and Hydraulic free download.
 Can create simulation for pneumatic and hydraulics.
 All functions are easily accessible.
 An interactive circuit editor included.
 Drag and drop feature supported.
 Can be used for self study and tutorials.
 Provides a wide range of possibilities for communication between other software products.

CHAPTER 2

INTRODUCTION
Pressure Relief valves
This type of valves sets a limit on the rise of pressure within a hydraulic line. In normal
operation the valve is closed and no fluid passes through. But if the pressure in the line exceeds the
limit the valve opens to relieve the pressure. This protects expensive machinery such as motors, pumps
and actuators from becoming damaged from high pressure.

Without a relief valve the pressure can continue to grow until another component fails and
pressure is released.

Two Types of Pressure Relief Valves are there.

1. Direct Acting
2.Pilot Operated

Relief valves are also made to relieve flow in either direction. Fluid pressure at the other port
acts on a shoulder on the plunger to open the valve. Another type of direct-acting relief valve has a
guided piston. In this valve a sliding piston, instead of a poppet, connects the pressure and reservoir
ports. System pressure acts on the piston and moves it against a spring force. As the piston moves, it
uncovers a reservoir port in the valve body.

Shuttle valves
Shuttle valves are also known as double control or single control non-return valves. A shuttle valve has
two air inlets ‘P1’ and ‘P2’ and one air outlet ‘A’. When compressed air enters through ‘P1’, the sphere will
seal and block the other inlet ‘P2’. Air can then flow from ‘P1’ to ‘A’. When the contrary happens, the
sphere will block inlet ‘P1’, allowing air to flow from ‘P2’ to ‘A’ only.

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF CIRCUIT.

 One port of pressure relief valve will be connected with pump delivery line or pressure line and other
port will be connected with pneumatic reservoir.

 Poppet will be positioned to its seat due to the spring force, one adjusting screw is provided to change
the setting pressure of relief valve

 If pressure at the inlet of relief valve is not enough to overcome the spring force, in that situation
poppet will be remain seated over its seat and will not allow the flow of fluid through it and therefore
relief valve will be closed and will not allow flow through it.

 When pressure at the inlet of relief valve increases and overcomes the spring force which was adjusted
with the help of pressure adjusting screw displayed at the top of relief valve, in that situation poppet
will leave the seat and will permit the flow of fluid through relief valve.

 Hence, if pressure at inlet of relief valve overcomes the setting pressure of relief valve then fluid will
flow to hydraulic reservoir through relief valve and therefore further increment in pressure in pressure
line will be avoided.

 When pressure at inlet of relief valve falls below the setting pressure, poppet will again positioned to
its seat due to the action of spring force and relief valve will be closed and will not allow the flow
through it.

ADVANTAGES
 High effectiveness many factories have equipped their production lines with compressed air supplies
and movable compressors. There is an unlimited supply of air in our atmosphere to produce
compressed air. Moreover, the use of compressed air is not restricted by distance, as it can easily be
transported through pipes. After use, compressed air can be released directly into the atmosphere
without the need of processing.
 High durability and reliability Pneumatic components are extremely durable and cannot be damaged
easily. Compared to electromotive components, pneumatic components are more durable and reliable.
 Simple design the designs of pneumatic components are relatively simple. They are thus more suitable
for use in simple automatic control systems
 High adaptability to harsh environment Compared to the elements of other systems, compressed air is
less affected by high temperature, dust, corrosion, etc.
 Safety Pneumatic systems are safer than electromotive systems because they can work in inflammable
environment without causing fire or explosion. Apart from that, overloading in pneumatic system will
only lead to sliding or cessation of operation. Unlike electromotive components, pneumatic
components do not burn or get overheated when overloaded.
 Easy selection of speed and pressure the speeds of rectilinear and oscillating movement of pneumatic
systems are easy to adjust and subject to few limitations. The pressure and the volume of air can
easily be adjusted by a pressure regulator.
 Environmental friendly the operation of pneumatic systems do not produce pollutants. The air
released is also processed in special ways. Therefore, pneumatic systems can work in environments
that demand high level of cleanliness. One example is the production lines of integrated circuits.
 Economical As pneumatic components are not expensive; the costs of pneumatic systems are quite
low. Moreover, as pneumatic systems are very durable, the cost of repair is significantly lower than
that of other systems.
