THE PROBLEMS AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Mathematics is the science that deals with the logic of shape, quantity and

arrangement. It is all around us, in everything we do. Most of the students have

been struggling in understanding the concept of this subject especially the Grade

7 students who are new to the environment they are facing for they came from

the idea of Math being simple. In order to test their skills in Mathematics,

examination is one of the medium.

Tests play an important role in learning and providing benefits for the

students. According to Instructional Technology & Training, exam or quiz is a

form of student assessment that measures knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Generally, an exam is a culminating assessment that assesses a student over a

large period of time and over a range of material. A quiz can function throughout

a course as an informative feedback device allowing both the instructor and the

students to see where they are excelling or need more focus.

In order for a student to see his/her advancement to studies, test is one of

the medium that educators use to regulate. Educators conduct some remedial

and other chance giving test for the students to reach the passing level.

Consequently, they were able to pass their subject because of this manner.

Tests as well as quizzes are one of the factors that affects one student's

performance. Educators can now assess the student's capabilities and the

knowledge that is learned from them. These helps improve the quality of the
student's performance. Subsequently, a student must know his performance

throughout the grading period that would let them enhance their abilities and

understanding towards the lectures that is given to them. Through hard work and

perseverance, one individual can achieve his goal.

Background of the Study

As former Grade 7 students, the researchers come up with the study

based on personal experiences. Most of the students find difficulty in memorizing

formulas, analyzing problems, solving equations and even oral recitations. All of

these affects the students’ score when the teacher gave quizzes, test and most

especially Department exams. They often get low scores and eventually failed,

because of these difficulties.

According to an author of a source Owlocation, Megan Machucho (2018) if

a student does poorly on an assessment, there are some consequences. Their

grade could suffer. Therefore, test scores of students have greater effects on

their final grade, especially those primary tests taken such as preliminary and

departmental test. As said earlier, if these students suffer from difficulties when it

comes to Mathematics, most of them will get lower grades if they got low scores

every time. This study will show the analysis of the departmental test scores of

these current Grade 7 students and its effects to their overall performance.

This research also tries to seek the importance of giving Departmental

test. And its application to students’ life. This will help teachers to the possibilities
to apply remedial classes in assessing Mathematics skills. Furthermore, it also

reports the analysis into the results of Departmental Exam of Grade7 students at

Pedro Guevara Memorial National High School. In addition, the researcher wants

to expound the effects of possible remedial classes towards the enhancement of

Mathematical skills of the Grade 7 students.

The diagram below shows the relationship between the independent

variable which is the selected Grade 7 students of Pedro Guevara Memorial

National High School to the dependent variable which is the test results of the

Third Departmental Test in Mathematics. In which greatly affects the students’

grade.
