This home features a relaxing; natural
atmosphere surrounded by a warm,
natural environment only a few minute’s
drive from the center of Chiangmai. The
modest, triangle-shaped lot challenged
designers to create a modern home that
keeps the natural environment intact.

The building has been separated into

two parts; a private area accommodating
the office, kitchen, bedroom and closet,
and second, public space holding the liv-
ing room and open library that connects
to a wide balcony around the house.

The kitchen, closets, bathrooms, and

within the thickness of the walls.
The resulting composition stretches
along one side of a suburban plot,
tucked partially behind an unremark-
able existing house, serving to define
a shared lawn at the center of the
property.

Contrast is also integral to the composi-

tion of the house itself, with visually light
materials and elements forming the skins
and furnishings of the voids left between
concrete walls. Aluminum and glass
curtain walls are subdivided informally,
avoiding the stasis imposed by con-
ventional proportion schemes. Sliding,
overlapping wood screens, together with
interior blinds and exterior foliage, serve
to block excess sunlight and provide
privacy from the street, while retaining
the airiness of the voids.

incorporates bookshelves behind
sliding polycarbonate screens

Bespoke steel doors mark thresholds

between solid and void, detailed to
allow the concrete’s mass and texture
to dominate visually. Engineered wood
and striated polycarbonate echo the
formwork, using more delicate lines.
A counter-cum-stair formed within one
of the concrete walls yields to a sleek
steel bridge across the central void to
the opposite wall. The stair bridge takes
inspiration from the sky for its color,
and the tree outside for its shape,
without compromising its status as
an industrial object.

The heat from the sun is a significant
consideration in tropical regions such as
Bangkok, where people can live without
air-conditioning all year long. Because of
the property’s location in a dense area
of Bangkok, louver panels are used stra-
tegically as a shading device in lieu of a
long overhanging roof because of their
space and privacy benefits.

Untitled House 001 is located in a small
space; and constructed with a limited
budget. Nevertheless, the designer is
able to transform a space of 280 square
meters into an ideal functional space
for every member of the family.

After demolishing the original 30-year

old townhouse located in the middle
of Ngam Wong Wan Soi 23, designers
planned a new house on the 168 square
meters plot of land. The first concern
was to divide the home into communal
family space and private space both for
the owner and his parents. A 3-story
house fit the bill. The ground floor holds
a garage, a functional hall for family
members, small art studio, storage facil-
ity, dining room and kitchen; while the
first floor accommodates the parent’s
bedroom and prayer room. The second
floor, accessed via a private staircase
contains the owner and his son’s bed-
rooms and a pantry. The architect likens
the design this house to 2 different units
of condominium that are placed on the
first and second floor.

Simple geometry, two squares, joined
at the corner defines the initial plan,
separating master and service functions.
The master consists of the living room,
dining room, master bedroom, terraces
and occupies the front square, where
guest rooms, kitchen, laundry, storage
and maid area, are placed in the back
space. The master area is elevated,
which allows natural ventilation to pass
underneath the building, and connected
to the lower level maid’s quarter with
a straight ramp. This horizontal and
vertical spacing imparts each room with
its own garden view filled with natural
lights and ventilation, while maintaining
each room’s privacy. The home’s interior
features are designed conjointly with the
architectural design. Built-in closets and
cabinets are integrated into walls, the
breakfast pantry functions as storage
and as a visual partition between living
room and dining room. While the home’s
architecture and size sets it apart from
its neighbors, utilitarian materials and a
conventional construction process lend
a simple elegance to the abode. Terra
cotta roof, plastered bricks wall, and
reinforced concrete pillars are utilized
for the exterior finish, with natural wood
and locally crafted furniture compliment
the interior.

Baan Sai Ma (Sai Ma House) is a home/
studio/workshop near the Chao Phraya
River in Nonthaburi, 20 minutes north of
Bangkok. The building is divided equally
between home and studio/workshop. It
is designed to be a hyper-flexible struc-
ture, able to accommodate the future
rhythms of life and studio practice.
A number of scenarios that the build-
ing might have to accommodate were
imagined - each possible future was
comprised of various arrangements of
home, studio, workshop, gallery, retail,
and rental spaces.

The workshop is for prototyping

components for clients

These functional requirements informed the struc-

ture of the building, which is a welded steel moment
frame arranged in a 3m grid. Long spans are achieved
solely with precast hollow-core slabs. Columns and
ground floor beams are 150 mm x 150 mm steel wide
flange and the doubled roof beams are 150 mm x 90
mm steel angle. Care was taken to make sure that full
6-meter lengths of the structural steel could be used
with maximum efficiency, without waste, and without
having mid-span joints. For ease of future removal and
renovation, all walls are hollow construction and made
of lightweight steel tube framing clad in various sub-
strates (gypsum board, cement board, cork, raw sheet
steel, corrugated steel).

‘L Studio’ is the residential and workshop

project for Thaweesak Srithongdee, or
best known as Lolay. He is building the
house primarily as a family dwelling in his
hometown, but it will also function as an
artist studio.Architecturally, 2 main design
concepts were developed:

1. Utilizing the traditional Thai two-story

pillar construction. This approach is in-
spired by the devastating effects of the
2011 mega flood. In addition to safety, a
major design benefit is the flow of cold
air from upper and lower floors, providing
year-round comfort to the inhabitants.

2. Installing a ramp for vertical walkway

instead of stairs. This Universal design
concept is embraced by the owner because
it fits with his versatile & limitless view of
life. It is the idea that environmental design
allows for the broadest range of people
or activities using this ramp without any
trouble as well.

Lolay’s illustration draws in

his artworks and inspirations

A few years ago, the Jotisakulratana

family acquired a piece of land in a quiet
Bangkok housing compound, surround-
ed by luscious greenery. Every piece of
land here contains both a quiet front
road and an 8 meter wide green belt
at its back. Living here simply means
that one will always look out onto a
garden that shields and offers a sense
of tranquility hard to find in the bustles
of Bangkok.

As their piece of land borders that of

their close relatives who also plan to
build a house, the two families decided
to ‘share’ something. They had a vision
that their houses would answer to each
of their specific needs, allowing them
to lead separate lives yet forming a har-
monious whole that occasionally brings
them together. ‘We have a fluid vision of
the spaces and felt that the house can
be transformed to accommodate our
changing needs. We foresee something
voluminous and airy,’ the owner stated.

Exterior and interior elements are

now working together to create an
ensemble of spaces that answer the
owners’ needs. The real character of the
house does not rest in signs of identity
added onto its exterior surfaces. The
house does not work for ‘everyone,’ but
responds to specific habits and rituals
of its residents. Their visions became
guiding principles that led the design to
its realizations. In many ways, essential
efforts within the design process came
from the owners whose input and spatial
requirements became the design pre-
text. The life of this house begins as its
construction ends. It is to be shaped and
reshaped by the owners’ transforming
lives, as put in their words ‘it answers
our callings, and allows us to transform.’

Folded House is located in Chatuchak

district, one of Bangkok’s most densely
built residential area and business
district. This two-story house has a
footprint of 215 square meters and is
8-meters high. The architect’s plan is to
create spatial organization for residen-
tial architecture with the experimenta-
tion of ‘Folding’ as a generative tool in
the architectural design process.
248–249

SMHs2_P248_307.indd 248-249 8/13/14 4:01 AM

The gentle slope of the base plane slightly emerged
from the ground; approaching the main entrance
and becoming the living room floor. The floor plan is
folded continuously to become the wall and U-shaped
roof plane. Moreover, the second folded plane is
inserted to compliment the first. This plane flows from
the ground floor, where the dining room, multipurpose

area are located, and folded vertically as a wall plane
and wrapped to be floor plane of second floor which
contained master bedroom, two bedrooms, and study.

Consequently, the integration between the two folded

planes cloud create a wide range of dynamic of spatial
volumes; which, organized along the continuous sur-
faces, result in a different perception of each space.
This provides the visual connection between the inhab-
ited areas and the outside. The U-shaped configuration
creates a peaceful courtyard enclosure where natural
NORTH ELEVATION elements, such as trees, a reflecting pool, grass and
gravel compose the heart of this house. Therefore,
the residents would perceive a natural environment
and understand the design message of the co-exis-
tence between man, architecture and nature.
