Scriptural Reflection

A reading from the first book of Samuel.

(Sam 18:3-4,19:1-4,20:1-4)

Jonathan and David – friends!

Jonathan entered into a bond

with David, because he loved him
as himself. Jonathan divested
himself of the mantle he was
wearing and gave it to David,
along with his military dress and
his sword, his bow and his belt....

Trouble!
Saul discussed his intention of
killing David with his son Jona-
than and with all his servants.
But Jonathan, who was very
fond of David, told him
My father Saul is trying to kill
you. Therefore, please be on
guard tomorrow morning;
get out of sight and remain in
hiding...”

defense of a friend...

Jonathan then spoke well of David to his

father Saul saying to him. “Let not your
majesty sin against his servant David,
for he has committed no offense against
you, but has helped you very much by his
deeds.”

A stronger promise of friendship!

David went to Jonathan, “what crime or
what offense does your father hold
against me that he seeks my life?”

Jonathan answered him: “Heaven forbid

that you should die. My father does
nothing great or small, without disclosing
it to me. Why, then, should my father
conceal this from me? This cannot be so!
But David replied: “Your father is well
aware that I am favoured with your
friendship, so he has decided, Jonathan
must not know of this lest he be grieved.
Nevertheless, as the Lord lives and as
you live, there is but a step between me
and death.” Jonathan then said to David,
“I will do whatever you wish.”

Am I ready for Friendship?

A Personal Assessment Worksheet

Read each of the statements carefully, and ask yourself if you

are ready for friendship. Give yourself a score from 0-10.
Remember: 10 is the highest score!

1. I am happy with myself. I know myself, and I am

able to accept myself with all my good and bad
points. I often thank God for making me just as I
am. I do my best to develop my gifts and talents.

2. I am happy with my family. Although my par-

ents are not perfect I accept them as they are and
willingly respect and obey them. I am happy
with my brothers and sisters.

3. I am able to control myself, most especially my

feelings. I am not afraid to feel angry, or sad, or
lonely. I know that I feel an attraction for some
people and an aversion for others. I thank God
for my feelings.

4. I am able to act with good manners. I know how

to dress properly: never overdresses, nor under-
dressed. I can control my voice, my actions,
even my laughter. I know how to keep quiet
when necessary.

5. I respect others as they are. I do not keep biases

against others. I do not place labels on people. I
appreciate them as they are, no matter how dif-
ferent and unique they may be.
7

6. I am not afraid to speak the truth. I do not wear

a mask when dealing with others. I do not want
to be a hypocrite. I try to be sincere and frank at
all times.

7. I humbly accept my mistakes. I am not afraid to

say sorry when I hurt others. I am able to laugh
at myself, even in front of others. I do not pre-
tend to be a “Superman.” I do not boast of myself
the whole time.

8. I am able to get along with others. I am able to

listen to people and laugh at their jokes. I am
not afraid to look at people when I need to talk to
them. I am no longer shy whenever others are
around.

9. I am willing to sacrifice my own plans and de-

sires. I am even able to give up what is mine for
the sake of the others. I am not afraid to suffer
some pain and inconvenience when needed.

10. I have my principles in life. I believe in GOD, and

in His plan for me and for all women. I obey the
laws of God, and take time to pray to Him. I see
in every person the image of GOD Himself.

Prayer for Friendship

Dear God, grant me the wonderful gift of friendship

so that I can respond to Your invitation to be your
friend. Grant me the ability to live my friendship
according to what friendship is all about – Your way.
Grant me enough courage to trust my friends and enough
integrity so that they may have the courage to trust me. Grant
me the capacity to understand that, when You prune me through
my friends, Your intention is to heal me, and allow me to grow.
Teach me to understand that, by loving and treasuring the friends
You gave me, I love my true self. By loving myself so dearly this way,
I truly love You and adore You in me, in others, and in all things.
Amen.
