Guidance on preparing for the discussion group – Week 3

In preparation for the class students will have read specified research texts uploaded on e-learning
Canvas

Part 1: Summary of the article

Please write the summary of the article (max. 500 words) below.

In technology enhanced learning, technology has a role to assist in learning and teaching
activities in the classroom. More precisely the application of ICT in the classroom for teaching and
learning activities in the world of education. Then, the word 'enhancement' itself is meant that
technology enhanced learning is the use of technology that is specialized and used to make
improvements. Even though there are many technological innovations in the world of education,
there is a lack of evidence that technology can be very useful in education. The role of technology
seems to be to replace teaching practice because of the lack of evidence of enchantment in the use
of technology. But what is actually evidence is? Price and Kirkwood (2010), stated that, "Evidence
may be understood as the demonstration of a truth, but the interpretation of truth as objective,
subjective, absolute or relative, influences what is acceptable as truth and hence evidence", (p.773).

Part 2: Notes on readings

As per the course syllabus come prepared with notes on the readings in three categories:

 Things I agree with article C

Is when the author said that the technology might not enhance student learning
because the evidence gathered so far has tended to focus on accounts of technology use
and it also lacked pedagogical underpinning in that it was unclear what enhancements in
learning had been achieved.
 Things I disagree with
Alhamdulillah, there is no disagreement with it.
 Things that I am confused about or have questions about.
We still confused about is it can apply only in HE or in General?

Part 3: Reflection on readings

Article C

a) What is the issue the article tries to bring up and what is the solution it offers with regard
to using technology?
The issue that the researcher is trying to address the lack of evidence in the
application evidence from enhancement in student learning. The solution is we need to join
formal training or qualifications in HE teaching, academics have not been exposed in robust
evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning supported by theoretical a grounding.

TELL 2020-1
Higher Education needs to move towards an evidence-based approach to learning and
teaching practices, especially in relation to using technology, wherein we actively examine
our assumptions, seek robust evidence as to effectiveness, and are prepared to change
when the evidence indicates this need (Price & Kirkwood, 2008).
b) Why do the author think that examples showed by research in technology in education
might not “enhance” student learning?
Because the evidence gathered so far has tended to focus on accounts of technology
use, typically of an anecdotal nature and confined to particular local contexts, such as
specific classroom innovations. Rarely was evidence used to illustrate how practices had
changed for academics. The evidence gathered also lacked pedagogical underpinning in that
it was unclear what enhancements in learning had been achieved.
c) There are 3 types of evidence:

a. Accounts of innovations :
These are descriptions of how technology has been used in higher education. The
evidence provided is typically of a less formal nature including anecdotes,
observations and questionnaire data, including measures of student satisfaction.
b. Lessons learned :
These are accounts of learning and teaching with technology and lessons have been
learned from their use. They include evidence ranging from formal to informal forms
of data collection, including both qualitative and quantitative data. The data will also
range in nature from weak to robust data collection methods.
c. Changes in practice :
These provide good examples of how evidence (e.g. of aspects that learners find
troublesome) has been used to drive an investigation into innovations in technology
in learning and teaching, followed by an evaluation of that application‟s
effectiveness for student learning. This evidence is then used to drive changes in
practice.

d) Which one do the author think that research should be about? To what extend do you
agree/ disagree?
Lesson learned. Because, this has a largest proportion of these studies (91%) were
categorised as “lesson learned”, with only 6% illustrating any evidence of changes in practice
these all reported modifications with successive student cohort. This set of studies covers a
wide variety of innovations in many discipline areas spread across a range of countries.

e) What does it mean by “enhancement in student learning” according to the article?

Regardless of the tradition, the common conclusion in characterising learning is that
improvements are developmental and qualitatively richer, noy just an increasing in
knowledge. Hence an enhancement is one that supports the qualitative development of
learning.
