Example 1. 400 men can construct a building in 80 days. How many days will 800 men will take to
construct the same building?
Solution. 400 men can construct the building in 80 days.
 1 man can construct the same building in (400 × 80) days
(Less people, more days, so multiply)
 1 man can construct the same building in 32,000 days
32000
∴ 800 men will take = 800 = 40 days.

## Example 2. Write 10/9 as a recurring decimal.

Solution. 10/9 = 1.111111111111..........
 10/9 = 1.1

## Example 3. Solve the linear equation:

2x + 3x = 50 - 5x.
Solution. 2x + 3x = 50 - 5x
 5x = 50 - 5x
 5x + 5x = 50
 10x = 50
 10x/10 = 50/10
x=5

Example 4. In a class, if 75 % of students are absent, then 75 students are present. Then, if 25 % of
student is present, than how many are absent?
Solution. 75 % of the students are absent, then 25 % of students are present. Let total number
of
students is 100.
100×75
Number of students in the class = = 300 students.
25
25 % of student is present, 75 % of student is absent.
75×300
Absentees = = 225 students.
100

Example 5. Raghav borrowed money at simple interest for 4 years at rate of 2 % p.a., and if the
principal is Rs. 340 then find the sum payable after 4 years.
Solution. Let P stand for principal, R stand for rate, and T and I stand for time and interest
respectively. We have,
P = Rs. 340,
R = 2 % p.a. (pa stands for ‘per annum’ which means ‘per year’)
T = 4 years, at S.I.
I = ?, A = ?
A = P + I.
340×4×2
I= = Rs. 27.20
100
A = P + I = Rs. 340.00 + Rs. 27.20 = Rs. 367.20

Example 6. Find the compound interest for Rs. 2500, rate 4 %, compounded annually for 5 years.
Solution. Principal, P = Rs. 2,500
Rate, R = 4 % p.a.
Time, T = 5 years.
C.I. = ? (to be calculated)
Putting these values in the equation, we have
4 4 4
2,500 × 1 + × × -1
100 100 100
999936
= 2500 ×
1000000
