ELECTRIC ALTAR

Dungaree, the raw-stoner band, from Szeged, Hungary, composed of
vocalist Gergely Laszlo, guitarist Zoltan Horvath, bassist Attila Balogh,
and drummer Dominik Dencs recently wrapped their new album,
Electric Altar, recorded at Toe Rag Studios in London.
Two years after releasing their first full length album, Bipolar World,
Dungaree decided to hit the studio again, but this time they upped their
game with Grammy winning engineers Liam Watson and Noel Summerville
both of whom worked on White Stripes’ legendary album, Elephant. They
changed their instruments, set a course and wrote the songs. After some
careful consideration, Tamás Nemes, their manager, who lives in London
and worked with Liam before, recommended Toe Rag Studios.

The studio is notable for its analog gear and the sound of the records cut
there, however the equipment would be nothing without Liam’s enthusiasm
and expertise. His impressive discography is a perfect testament to this. “It
was great to record with a producer, who worked with such influential bands
– for us and the genre- like Electric Wizard or Uncle Acid and the
Deadbeats,” said Attila about working with Liam.

At Toe Rag, there is no digital equipment. There are Studer tape machines,
an EMI console, smartly acquired from Abby Road Studios and infinite
racks of vintage equipment. This leaves little to no room for error. The band
knew this very well beforehand and thanks to careful preparation, the
recording sessions were completed without any significant problems. Liam,
in a nutshell, stated that “they’re a good tight band, no hard work for me.”

Perhaps it’s no wonder that it was easy to work with Dungeree, if the band
could play as loud as they deem is worthy of their music.

“We play really loud and that is a problem with a lot of places, but we didn’t
need to hold back at Toe Rag. In fact, Liam asked us to do everything as it
were live,” said Attila, “in our experience and talking to the audience and
experts of the genre, playing loud and being confident with that is what
really gives the music its taste.”

The mastering of the record was done at another legend’s studio by the
name of Noel Summerville at 3345 Mastering. Noel works at his mastering
room in his home, where similarly to Liam, keeps a sizable stable of vintage
gear, however due to modern needs, he also incorporates high-end digital
equipment as well.

The location played a big part in the band’s attitude to the recording
sessions and the ensuing mini-tour. Coming from a small town, the band
was awestruck by London’s rich rock n’ roll heritage.

“I really dig that each part of London has its own music, the bars have all
these different artists from different genres. We’ve seen some bands playing
in small pubs, that will soon be playing on the main stages of major festivals.
The amount that London and Great Britain in general, to this day, affects the
world’s taste in rock is unbelievable!” said Zoli, summing the London trip.

Following the recording sessions of Electric Altar, Dungaree played 4 club
gigs and also shot a music video for Manchausen, where they could get
feedback from a new crowd, “it was great to hear that the locals really
enjoyed the show. It means a lot that the British audience appreciates us, if
someone, they know what good rock n’ roll is like,” recalled Zoli about the
tour. Upon the success of the concerts, Dungaree plans to return to the UK
with an 8 show tour next year.

The record is now available online, but a vinyl release is expected around
March 2019.
