The Hidden Figures is based on untold true story. This is written by: Margot Lee Shetterly.

This story
is all about three African-American Women Mathematicians who overcome a discrimination, while
working at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), during the Space Race. Because of
the segregation of the colored group, but they show their brave and dedication of their work. This study
aims to visualize, that being a black person is not a hindrance to full fill their dreams come true.

Hidden Figures tells the story of the three African-American Women who worked at computers to
solve problems for engineers and other mission at National Aeronautics and Space Administration during
the Space Race. For the first year of their careers, the workplace was segregated and women were kept in
the background as human computers. Katherine Coleman Johnson is the first black woman on the team in
division of West Area Computers in Hampton, Virginia (1961). Mary Jackson is an aspiring engineer and
their supervisor Dorothy Vaughan. When, Al Harrison invites his subordinates to solve a complex
mathematical equation, Katherine develops the solution, leaving him impressed. Suddenly, Al Harrison is
enraged when he finds out that Katherine Coleman forced to walk to another building to use the colored
people’s bathroom. Therefore Harrison abolishes the bathroom segregation, knocking down the “Colored
Bathroom” sign. Eventually, Harrison allows Katherine to be included in their meeting, and she creates an
equation to guide the space capsule during re-entry. Meanwhile, Mary Jackson goes to court and to
convince the judges to grant her permission to attend night classes in all- white school to obtain her
engineering degree. Dorothy Vaughan learns how to installation of the IBM 7090 DPS electronic
computer that could be replace the human computers. The day launch of IBM 7090 DPS calculations for
the capsule’s landing coordinates, and Astronaut John Glenn request that Katherine be called into check
them. After the successful launch and orbit, the space capsule has a heat shield problem. Finally both of
them are successful in their careers.

In this story, Katherine Coleman is a mathematician who calculated flights trajectories for Project
Mercury and Apollo, also other missions. She work as a human computer in the gender segregated. Mary
Jackson is an aspiring Engineer and also she is assigned to the space capsule heat shield team and
immediately identifies a flaw, with encouragement from the team leader, a Polish Jewish survivor, she
submit an application for an official NASA Engineer position and begins to pursue an Engineering degree.
And their unofficial acting supervisor Dorothy Vaughan who insulate the IBM 7090 DPS. Vivian Mitchel
assigns Katherine to assist Al Harrison, Space Task Group, given her skills in analytic geometry. Katherine
is the first black woman on the team. Meanwhile, Vivian inform Dorothy that she will not be promoted, as
there are no plans to assign a permanent supervisor for the colored group. However, Katherine meet her
soon to be husband at a barbecue, but she is disappointed when he voices scepticism about women’s
mathematical abilities. He apologizes and begins to spending time with Katherine and her three
daughters. Therefore, Harrison invited his subordinates to solve a complex mathematical equation but
Katherine develops the solution, leaving him impressed and also her co-workers. Al Harrison is enraged
when he finds out that Katherine forced to walk to another building to use the colored people’s
bathroom. He abolishes bathroom segregation, knocking down the sign “Colored Bathroom”. However he
allows Katherine to be included in their meeting, in which she creates an equation to guide the space
capsule during re-entry. Meanwhile, Mary Jackson goes to the court and convinces the judges to grant
her permission to attend night classes in all white school to obtain her Engineering degree. Therefore,
Dorothy learns of the impending how to installation of the IBM 7090 DPS, that could replace human
computers. And also she visit the computer room to learn about it, and it successfully starts the
machine.Eventually Vivian Mitchel addressed Dorothy as Mrs Vaughan, indicating her new found respect.
As the final arrangements for John Glenn launch are made of Kathrine is reassigned back to West Area
Computers. The day of the launch discrepancies arise in the IBM 7090 DPS calculations for the capsule
landing coordinates and Astronaut John Glenn requests that Katherine called to check them. However Al
Harrison gave her a security pass so that they can relay the results to John Glenn together after a
successful launch and the orbit, the space capsule has a heat shield problem. The mission controls to
decide to land after the three orbits instead of seven. Katherine Johnson suggest that they leave the
retrorocket attached to the heat shield for re-entry. Eventually the instructions prove correct and the
Friendship 7 had successfully lands. Based on my observation about the story of Hidden Figures that the
three black women who worked in National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) segregated to
the white American that there co-worker that they use a sign in the bathroom “Colored Bathroom”. The
White American they trust and misjudgement the Black American but they didn’t know that this three
African –American especially the first black women in the team named Katherine Coleman Johnson who
calculated flights trajectories for Project Mercury. However Mary Jackson is one of the aspiring engineer
and Dorothy Vaughan is unofficial acting supervisor and she learns how to install an IBM 7090 DPS that
could be replace the human computer. In the study Katherine Johnson was a hero, there were so many
others that were required to do other kinds of tests and check to make mission come to fruition. And
both of them are successful.

The story of Hidden Figures is about the overcome discrimination in the three African-American
Women who worked at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as a Mathematician,
Engineer and acting Supervisor because, the segregation of the colored group. In this situation her co-
workers, a White American they didn’t trust her maybe because she is a black women, but she ignore it
and she did her best to do her job being a Mathematician her name is Katherine Coleman Johnson. And
Mary Jackson assign space capsule heat shield team, and she is an inspiring Engineer. Also Dorothy
Vaughan is an acting supervisor but she learns impending how to install an IBM 7090 PDS that could
replace human computers. This three African-American Woman was a hero in National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA). So the lesson of the story was being a black woman or person is not a
hindrance to achieve your dream come true. And also if you are a black person don’t be shame and afraid
to show your talent and believe yourself, be confident and be happy of what you are.
