1.0 SCOPE OF APPLICATION

The current relay FIS1 monitors the current in 1- and 3-phase networks. It is equipped with two limit
value relays, which can be set independently of each other. For each limit value a corresponding
delay time is selectable. The operation mode can be coded for either over current - or under current
detection.

The current measuring circuits and the supply voltage are galvanic separated from each other and
from the measuring electronic circuitry. A direct current measurement, even without current
transformers in the nominal range of 5 amps is possible. An influence, e.g. by earthing loops is
excluded by this.

Especially to be mentioned is the fact that the limit value 2 can operate as an delayed overload
tripping unit. This attitude is similar to the thermic-temporal overload release of motor protective
switches. The FIS1 complies with the requirements of VDE 0108 with 110% nominal current within a
12-hour interval. The current-depending overload release can be switched off.

By ordering the FIS1 it is necessary to give up detailed information about the transformer current
(... / 1A or ... / 5A).

1/10
2.0 METHOD OF OPERATION

The FIS1 is a microprocessor controlled protective device. The current measurement takes place as
a simultaneous 3-phase scanning and is a true RMS measurement.

If the current in one of the three phases exceeds the pre-set limit value, the response delay time
starts running down. This is indicated by the corresponding LED which is blinking in a secondary
cycle. After running out of the delay time the relay is energized and the LED changes to steady light.
In case the current falls below the limit value again, the switching stage returns back without
hysteresis into its rest position after approximately 2 s.

The FIS1 can be applied in 50 Hz and 60 Hz networks as well. The mains frequency has to be pre-
selected by means of DIP-S3 (point 6).

3.0 FUNCTION

3.1 Commissioning

The FIS1 has to be connected according to the terminal allocation (view 3.

After connection of the auxiliary voltage the LED “U-AUX” will light and the measurement begins. The
limit value 1 is immediately released. The limit value 2 will be released in case the input E2 has
triggered.

The DIP-switches are visible after removing the front plate. For position of coding switches and
jumpers please refer to view 3.

3.2 NO- or NC- contact principle

The relay function, energized or de-energized, can be internally selected by means of jumpers J1
and J2, which results in following relations:

- limit value 1 = outgoing relay A7 = jumper J1

- limit value 2 = outgoing relay A8 = jumper J2

At closed jumper the outgoing relay operates in NO- mode. In case of exceeding the limit value the
outgoing relay is energized.

At opened jumper the outgoing relay operates in NC- mode, i.e. in case of exceeding the limit value
the outgoing relay is de-energized.

3.3 Under- or over current detection

The switching action for under- or over current detection can be coded by means of DIP-S2 and DIP-
S1 (view 3 and point 6), which results in following relations:

- limit value 1 = outgoing relay A7 = DIP-S2

- limit value 2 = outgoing relay A8 = DIP-S1

At closed DIP-switch the under current detection is activated. If the DIP-switch is opened, the over
current detection is selected.

The limit values 1 and 2 can be used for under- or over current mode. Furthermore the limit value 2
can be coded to thermic over current tripping (point 3.7).

2/10
3.4 Release of outgoing relay A8

The function of limit value 2, outgoing relay A8 will be released by the input E3. Without release the
relay remains in its position pre-determined by jumper 2. A closed release input is indicated by the
yellow LED E3.

3.5 Limit values “I-MAX”

The current limit value can be pre-selected for each switching stage from 0.05 amps up to 17.8
amps. It can be coded separately for both of the limit value relays by means of the DIP-switches „I-
MAX 1“ and „I-MAX 2“. Two current factors are available for setting:

- current factor 0,01 covers a value range from 0,01 amps up to 1,27 amps. ... / 1amps
- current factor 0,028 covers a value range from 0,028 amps up to 3,556 amps.

- current factor 0,05 covers a value range from 0,05 amps up to 6,3 amps.
... / 5amps
- current factor 0,14 covers a value range from 0.14 amps up to 17,8 amps.

The DIP-switches 1... 7 having valences according to the BCD-code (1 – 64).

By means of the DIP-switch 8 the current factor is selected.

the relay function may be tested.

3.6 Tripping delay “TIMER

Tripping delay is active for the magnetic limit values only. It can be pre-selected for each switching
stage from 0.1 s up to 127 s. This period of time can be coded separately for both of the limit value
relays by means of the DIP-switches „Timer 1“ and „Timer 2“.

Two time factors are available for setting:

- time factor 0.1 covers the value range from 0.1 s up to 12.7 s.
- time factor 1 covers the value range from 1 s up to 127 s.

The DIP-switches 1... 7 having valences according to the BCD-code.

By means of the DIP-switch 8 the time factor is selected.

If a certain time has to be set, the DIP-switches must be set in a manner that the sum results in the
desired time.

Example 1: 2:

time factor : 0.1s DIP-8 = OFF 1s DIP-8= ON
calculation : 5 s : 0.1s = 50 5s : 1s = 5

OFF x x x x x 0,1s OFF x x x x x 0,1s
ON x x x 1s ON x x x 1s

If the outgoing relay shall response directly at attained limit value, all the DIP-switches must be on
OFF position. The delay time will be then 0.1 second.

3.7 THERMIC OVER CURRENT MONITORING

The thermic over current monitoring is activated in case the coding switch “basic setting” DIP-S4 has
set to ON and E3 is connected to L+. So the limit value relay 2 works with the thermic characteristic
of motor protective switches, according to a current-time characteristic. The tripping delay TIMER 2
(point 3.5) is not active.

The FIS1 is up-integrating the current values of the past 12 hours and will activate the limit value
relay 2 (A8) on attaining of 60 minutes with 110% nominal current.
The pre-set current value of Inom with 110% at 3600s for 1 hour and 400% Inom at 3s are used as limit
values.
