School Board Assignment

I watched the Clark County School Board regular meeting on November 29, 2018. I was

surprised when they started with the pledge of allegiance and a color guard salute. It made the

meeting seem more formal. It started with the President, Deanna, going over the agenda for the

meeting, then she opened up the floor to the citizens to voice their concerns.

The first person to speak was Autumn Tampa. She was making a claim about the district

violating students 4th Amendment rights by having random searches. The 4th Amendment says a

person has the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against

unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon

probable cause. Autumn explained how she was recently selected by the TSA for a random pat

down and how she felt violated. She put an emphasize on the fact that she had done nothing

wrong, but still felt scared. She would like the district to not allow any pat downs or searches

without a parent being present, unless there is immediate, imminent danger. This relates to our

book because as a teacher, I will have to use my own common sense judgement to decide

whether a student should be searched or not and if I have enough probable cause.

The next person to voice their concerns was Michelle DeMayo. She explained that

because of the large increase in population in the Northwest Valley area, the schools need to be

rezoned to control the student populations. Her school, Aborview, has lost their basketball and

tennis courts due to needing space for more portables. She explained how science teachers can’t

be in rooms designed for science class, thus hindering the kind of teaching they can do. This

relates to our text because we learned how every student deserves equal rights to free public

education. It’s not right that larger population schools have to limit their teaching methods.

A man named Roger spoke next. He brought up how our schools are bursting at the

seams with an overflow of students. He went on to say that we can’t wait 5 years for new schools

to be built, that we need to add on to the existing schools. He also recommend that schools be

made to hold more students. Providing for a students education and well being is a section in our

book. How can we expected to uphold this standard when our school children are being crammed

into schools that weren’t built for that many kids?

Another speaker was there on behalf of his wife. She moved from another state and was

let go due to a licensing issue here in Nevada. Her husband argued that she has over 20 years

experience and that it wasn’t right of the school to do this. He wanted the board to overturn the

decision. This relates to our text because it’s important to know my rights as a teacher. I should

know exactly what I can and can’t be terminated for.

After all the concerned citizens spoke, the president continued the meeting by

announcing slight changes to wording in different policies. I found this part very boring and

slightly confusing with all the policy codes and regulations being read aloud.
