VIETNAM BEAT MALAYSIA 2-0

CHIANG MAI, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- Malaysia suffered an embarrassing 0-2
defeat to Vietnam in their opening Group A match of the 18th SEA Games
football event at the Chiang Mai Sports Complex Main Stadium here tonight.
Vietnam scored both the goals in the second half through Huynh Quoc
Cuong in the 55th minute and Vo Hoang Buu in the 83rd minutes from the
penalty spot for a well-deserved victory.
The loss today brought back the memory of Malaysia's embarrassing 0-1
defeat to the Philippines in the 1991 SEA Games in Manila. The football
team is paying their own way here as they were placed under Category B.
Although Malaysia started as the favourite, it was Vietnam who
dominated the match with their neat crosses and dangerous attempts at
Malaysia's goal.
The national side, which played three friendlies in Hong Kong, was
hardly in the game as the midfielders struggled to get the ball while
veteran Zainal Abidin Hassan was ineffective.
The defense was kept busy by the fast Vietnamese strikers, who had at
least three clear shots at Malaysia's goal mouth. In the 11th minute,
Nguyen Hon Son beat V. Thinagaran but his grounder just missed the goal.
Vietnam, coached by former Malaysian coach Karl Weigang of Germany,
played very well and had their opponents camping in their own half.
Malaysia's best chance in the first half came in the 26th minute but
Rizal Sukiman, who was put through by Dollah Salleh, shot wide with only
goalkeeper Nguyen Van Cuong to beat.
Ten minutes later, Vietnam almost struck when Le Huynh Duc's shot hit
the bar as Mudzar was well beaten.
Just a minute before the first half ended, Malaysia received a freekick
outside the box but Zainal's low shot went straight to the goalkeeper.
National coach Claude Le Roy brought in Yap Wai Loon and P. Nantha
Gobalan to beef the midfield in the second half but hardly ten minutes into
the game, Malaysia went down.
It resulted from a poor clearance by Ganeson and Le Huynh Duc played
the ball to the left and sent a short pass to the unmarked Huynh Quoc
Cuong. Mudzar had a hand on Huynh's close range shot but it was too
powerful for him to save.
Vietnam could have made 2-0 in the 72nd minute when Thinh Tan Thanh's
shot hit the bar. Four minutes later, Mudzar again saved Malaysia when he
tipped away a powerful shot by Le Huynh.
Abdul Ghani Malek came close to equalising in the 81st minute when his
header from a corner kick hit the right post.
Vietnam sealed the match with the second goal through a penalty kick in
the 83rd minute taken by Vo Hoang Buu. It was awarded after Thinagaran
brought down Nguyen Hon Son in the penalty box.
Malaysia will play Thailand on Wednesday.
In another Group A match earlier, defending champion Thailand defeated
Indonesia 2-1. Thailand took the lead in the 31st minute through
Jaturapattarapong but Indonesia equalised a minute later through Fakhri
Husaini.
The winning goal came in in the 68th minute when Sritong-in Natipong
scored from close range.

MALAYSIA HOLD THAILAND TO A SCORELESS DRAW

General News | 06/12/1995 | Author: / . |
CHIANG MAI, Dec 6 (Bernama) -- Malaysia stayed alive in the 18th SEA
Games football event after holding defending champion Thailand to a
scoreless draw in an exciting Group A match at the Chiang Mai Sports
Complex Stadium here tonight.
Malaysia, which had to avoid defeat tonight to stay in contention,
played their heart out after a much criticised 0-2 defeat to Vietnam in the
opening match.
The national team trooped in with a major reshuffle. Skipper Zainal
Abidin Hassan was pushed back to play as the sweeper while defender Kamal
Idris, playmaker Yap Wai Loon and speedy Afendi Julaihi were in the
starting line-up for the first time.
The changes made Malaysia more effective and energetic as they came
under heavy attack from the Thais, who had better ball control with
accurate long crosses and dangerous attempts.
Just six minutes into the match, Thailand, which defeated Indonesia 2-1
on Monday, came cracking at Malaysian wall with a solo effort by Senamuang
Kiatisuk whose left foot shot was tipped away by Mudzar Mohamad.
The Thais swamp all over Malaysian half but the Malaysians retaliated
with several counter attacks.
The Thais dominated the match with Kiatisuk, Kijmongkolsak Vitoon and
Yinphan Phanuwat. Vitton twice missed the scoring chance in the 14th and
31st minute.
Malaysia's best chance came in the 32nd minute when Afendi's shot was
blocked by Thai defenders. But Indonesian linesman Miskamto twice made
dubious off-side call that denied Malaysia a clear shot at goal.
In fact, he was "mobbed" by Malaysian players and coach Claude Le Roy
after the first half. Indonesian team is in the same group with Malaysia.
Just three minutes before the first half ends, Malaysia almost tumbled
but Rizal Sukiman saved the team when he cleared on line Sumet's header off
a corner kick.
The second half was also played on a fast pace as the homesters threw
everything to break the deadlock. They made three changes to beef up the
attack but it was Malaysia who almost scored.
In the 54th minute, Abdul Ghani Malek lobbed into the penalty box and
goalkeeper Soomit managed to tip away the cross.
Four minutes later, Malaysia escaped again when L. Suresh cleared a
header from a corner kick. The Thais were all over the Malaysia half in the
last 25 minutes but Zainal kept the defence under his control.
But the biggest escape came in the 69th minute after Sritong In
Natipong's rebound shot from an earlier try by Surachai was disallowed by
referee Ismail Surdi of Singapore for an offside.

MALAYSIA CRASH OUT WITH A 0-3 DEFEAT TO INDONESIA
General News | 08/12/1995 | Author: Arul Rajoo / | By: Arul Rajoo / |
CHIANG MAI, Dec 8 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian football team's debacle in the
SEA Games continued when they crashed out of the tournament after a humiliating
0-3 defeat to Indonesia in a Group A match at the Chiang Mai Sports Complex
Stadium,
here, tonight.
It was Malaysia's second loss as they were beaten 0-2 by Vietnam in the
opening match before holding host Thailand to a scoreless draw. They are
out of contention even before the games officially begin tomorrow. Malaysia
will complete their mission here with an insignificant match against Cambodia
on Sunday.
This is the third time in a row that Malaysia failed to get past the first
round. They clinched the gold in Kuala Lumpur in 1989 but failed miserably in
Manila and Singapore.
It was a pale shadow of their performance in their scoreless draw against
Thailand two days ago while the Indonesians were all over the Malaysian half
with their speedy attacks.
Just seven minutes into the match, Switzerland-based Kurniawan stunned the
Malaysians with a powerful left-footer that hit the post. Five minutes later,
an ineffective Zami Mohamed Noor was replaced by Idris Karim.
The substitution strengthened the Malaysian defence but the midfielders
found it hard to distribute the ball as Indonesia, which thrashed Cambodia
10-0, kept a tight control at half line.
Malaysia were denied an opening goal from their first corner in the 20th
minute when Anuar Abu Bakar's back heel seemed to have crossed the line when
it was cleared on line by the Indonesian referee.
It started when Indonesian goalkeeper Kurnia Sandi tipped it over L.
Suresh's corner but the ball fell to Dollah Salleh whose tap was connected by
Anuar Abu Bajcr.
The attempt spurred the national players as they moved more into their
opponent's half but several uncalled for mistakes led to ther downfall.
Suresh gave away a freekick just on the edge of the penalty box in the 35th
minute. Eri Irianto stepped in and his shot struck the Malaysian wall and
deflected in for the opening goal.
It was the start of Malaysia's collapse tonight. Just three minutes into the
second half, Kurniawan put Fachri Husaini through with a penetrating pass
and the latter slotted in for the second goal.
Kurniawan again punished the shabby Malaysian defence when he beat a
defender from the left and crossed into the box as Fachri easily tapped in his
second goal in the 55th minute.
In an earlier match Vietnam strengthened their bid for the semifinals with
a 4-0 win over Cambodia.

MALAYSIA: Mudzar Mohamad, Kamal Idris, Zainal Abidin Hassan, V. Thinagaran,

Zami Mohd Noor (Idris Karim), Rizal Sukiman, Yap Wai Loon, L. Suresh, Dollah

MALAYSIA WIN, GOAL POST TUMBLES

General News | 10/12/1995 | Author: Arul Rajoo / . | By: Arul Rajoo / . |
CHIANG MAI, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysia, already out of contention in
the 18th SEA Games football competition, vented their frustration on poor
Cambodia by scoring a 9-0 victory, and even brought down the goal posts in
a Group A match at Lamphun Stadium tonight.
In one of the most shocking incidents of the games, and probably
something unprecedented in international tournaments, Cambodia's goal posts
tumbled as Malaysia attempted to score their 10th goal in the 83rd minute.
The incident happened after Affendi Julaihi's powerful shot hit the
right post. Anuar Abu Bakar rushed in to slam in the rebound, his momentum
carrying him forward into the net.
The net and goal frame came tumbling down as thousands of spectators,
players and officials watched in disbelief. Anuar was lucky to escape
without any injuries.
Referee Tamat Haji Budin of Brunei stopped the match as the organisers
tried to repair the posts. Even Singapore and Laos players, who were
warming up for the second match, were stunned by the incident.
The organisers brought welders to the stadium, which is about 30km from
the city, to restore the posts.
After 50 minutes of stoppage, the match was resumed but Anuar's effort
was ruled invalid.
Malaysia took a four-goal lead in the first half of the match, which
had been rendered insignificant after Malaysia lost 0-2 to Vietnam, 0-3 to
Indonesia and drew 0-0 with Thailand.
Anuar and Dollah Salleh both scored a hattrick of goals. Anuar scored
in the 6th, 22nd and 70th minutes while Dollah netted his in the 17th, 62nd
(penalty) and 67th minutes.
The other goals came from Zainal Abidin Hassan (44th min), Afendi
Julaihi (60th min) and Lim Seng Kong (80th min). Cambodia have let in 24
goals in three matches.
