When this year's NHD topic was introduced the Civil Rights Movement was one of the

first things that came to my mind. It fits well into the theme and it was of the biggest Triumphs

in History for the African American community. I have learned about the topic in previous

History classes. I was fairly interested in the topic and I felt like it could be used to make a good

project. It was a pretty large topic and it had plenty of information about it. It also was recent

enough in history, so finding primary sources about the topic would not be that challenging.

Considering all these factors I chose The Civil Rights Act of 1964 for my NHD project.

I started conducting research by going through the American History database to find

information about the topic. I started by looking for general information about the topic. Next I

looked for more specific information about Civil Rights Act relating to, people who were

involved with it, events that lead up to and caused it, and reasons for its significance. I looked for

primary sources including speeches, radio broadcasts, and interviews, in order to get more valid

information. I also looked at modern sources to see effects the the Civil Rights Act had in the
present. I collected a variety of information from many different sources to make sure it was

valid and order to make the final project interesting

I decided to create a website because it was the category that allowed for the most

freedom. I felt like it would be the best choice because I could work on it without the need of

additional resources, it would be efficient to organize, and primary sources like pictures and

video clips would work well with that format. I have done a website for the NHD project in a

previous year, so I was the most comfortable with it. When creating the website I started by first

creating important pages like the title page and background information. Next I went into each

one of my pages and put in information that I had gotten from my research and from making my

project outline. I put in primary source quotations and pictures to make the website more

interesting. After the website was complete I tweaked it to make sure it was organized.

My project relates to NHD theme of Breaking Barriers in history because The Civil

Rights Act of 1964 broke the barrier of racial discrimination in America. The Civil Rights Act

allowed for racial equality in America and was one of the biggest steps that has been taken in

history by the African American Community in order to achieve equality. The Civil Rights Act

gave African Americans as well as other minority groups access to better jobs, education,

desegregated public spaces, as well as more political power. This is why the Civil Rights Act

1964 relates to this year's NHD theme and broke a barrier in history.
