In 2001, JHMC’s discharges totaled 23,629, including 2,821 newborns. Our emergency
room provided almost 100,000 visits and ambulatory care visits totaled almost 400,000 in
2001. JHMC has brought high quality, accessible services to the underserved residents of
the neighborhoods that we serve. Jamaica Hospital’s services fill a void for the people in
our community, many of whom speak limited or no English, are underinsured or have no
health insurance. Our commitment to serve all of these people put a strain on our finances
but we have been able to maintain financial stability over the past two years.
Hospital Staff
One of the most important lines of communication is through our staff, most of whom
live in our Queens, with some living in our service area. In particular, our physicians,
nurses and other clinical staff who witness the illnesses and needs of our population on a
daily basis, often recommend and initiate new programs and services.
Board of Trustees
JHMC's Board provides valuable input on program development. They review and make
decisions about programmatic and financial matters at their monthly meetings and are
involved in supporting the Jamaica community.

Administrator on duty
You probably know that concerns are easily sorted out at Jamaica during business hours.
From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, TheJamaica Hospital Medical Center
(like any typical business) is fully staffed by senior professionals from executive
administrators to supervisors in all aspects of the delivery of health care.
Unlike ordinary businesses, however, patient care at Jamaica continues 24 hours a day,
seven days a week, 365 days a year. And, even on holidays or in the wee hours of the
morning, there are professional staff on duty at Jamaica in offices that are never closed--
the Nursing Administration Office and the Administrator on Duty.
During off hours the AOD and Nursing Supervisor are appointed the senior voice for the
entire institution. There's always someone watching the ship, whether it be during a major
emergency or when a family needs immediate answers that perhaps the unit nursing and
support staff cannot provide.
After hours, the Nursing Supervisor and Administrator on Duty also handles urgent
questions from the media, the police, and the many city agencies that deal with hospitals.
He or she will be present during a medical crisis to coordinate personnel, such as from
nursing, anesthesia, transportation or radiology--or just to listen to concerns of a patient
or their family, if necessary. The AOD or Nursing Supervisor can answer questions about
anatomical gift donation or autopsy - or get the right person to answer the question for
you.
During regular hours, the Nursing Supervisor or Administrator on Duty is at work serving
as a liaison or referral service for all questions that need to be resolved. For instance, they
often help the patient or family whose problem isn't neatly solved by one department.
The Nursing Supervisor and Administrator on Duty are sort of like a traffic cop, and like
traffic cops who magically appear and untangle the intersection's snarl, the Nursing
Supervisor or AOD can be a patient's best friend.
The Nursing Supervisor or Administrator on Duty can be reached at (phone number). The
hours? Simply put, all the time.
Advance directives
Jamaica Hospital Medical Center recognizes and respects each patient in the provision of
care in accord with fundamental human, civil, constitutional and statutory rights to
improve patient outcomes and patient and family satisfaction. JHMC affirms the patient's
right to make decisions regarding his or her care, including the decision to discontinue
treatment, to the extent permitted by law. We will endeavor to assist you or your
representative, when appropriate, to exercise those rights by referring you to the
appropriate service, whether it be your attending physician, general counsel, or another
member of the health care team.
We also provide a forum, the ethics committee, to discuss ethical issues and concerns
which arise from patient care and treatment. If you have a question, concern or conflict
regarding your care that you feel may be appropriate for consultation with the ethics
committee, please bring it to the attention of a member of the health care team, or contact
a member of the committee directly by dialing '0' on your telephone.
The Office of Legal Affairs and Risk Management is responsible for all patient-related
questions and concerns regarding advance directives and consent. The office is open
Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. To contact the Office of Legal
Affairs, call (718) 206-6858

Emergency medicine
The Jamaica Hospital Chest Pain Center, the first of its kind in NYC, is a six-bed unit
located within the emergency department, and employs central monitoring of patients
with electrocardiography capability. This separate chest pain center allows for quick
diagnosis, and specific treatment and prevention of heart attacks.
The department also supports the Fast Track system. This calls for the rapid diagnosis of
less serious conditions, and allows for a quick two-hour turnaround time in most cases.
The department has a full-time staff of over 40 doctors, nurse practitioners and physician
assistants working to ensure the care of its patients is met around the clock.
The ED is supported by our nursing and ancillary staff who are trained and experienced
in the care of emergency patients. They have a talent for dealing with the concern of
patients and their families in a stressful environment and work hard to assure that your
stay is as comfortable and reassuring as possible.

Department of nursing
The Jamaica Hospital, for over one hundred years, has been committed to the delivery of quality
health care to the community. The Department of Nursing endeavors to conduct itself in a manner
supportive of this commitment.
We provide care and services for our patients regardless of their age, sex, race, religion or creed:
physical, emotional or spiritual health, socio-economic condition or cultural background. This
belief forms the cornerstone of our partnership with others and affords a foundation for mutual
trust.
We serve the community in a compassionate and caring capacity witha commitment to improving
health care. We strive to develop programs and projects that address the primary concerns of
the community.
We treat our patients and significant others with dignity, recognize their uniqueness, and facilitate
their active participation in their care.
We believe that this care is best achieved through utilization of the nursing process, patient
education, and informed decision-making. We further believe that patient education is an
integral part of caregiver-patient interaction, thereby promoting the patients' awareness,
activating potentials, and restoring their capacity to attain wellness.
We believe that health is a continuous life process, and that each individual is responsible for the
maintenance of his or her own health. As nurses, in our unique role as integrators of patient care
services and patient advocates, our primary objective is a collaborative effort towards health
restoration and promotion in order to maximize patient self-actualization. We help patients
integrate chronic illness into life experiences in order to enhance their quality of life.
We accept responsibility and accountability for our practice, which is governed by professional
standards and ethical codes. Our practice is enhanced by creating nursing excellence amidst
the complexity of an ever-changing health care environment. We believe that continuing
education and development at all levels is vital to the improvement and achievement of quality
patient care. We believe that, through continuous quality improvement the Department of
Nursing will collaborate with other disciplines to ensure that patient care is coordinated,
comprehensive, cost-effective and efficient. We believe that research utilization should be the
basis for clinical validation and improving nursing practice

The Department of Pediatrics at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center is one of the most
comprehensive facilities in the country in helping children and parents overcome illness.
Our physicians are highly trained in a variety of sub-specialties, but all of our staff
specialize in the compassion needed to treat children. The Department utilizes the main
hospital facilities to provide specialty care, and several off-site clinics for more
convenient access for less serious medical attention.
In January 2001, a new Pediatric Emergency Room was opened in Jamaica Hospital
Medical Center, which sees 30,000 patient care visits annually. This new facility
combines with 12 ambulatory care sites to offer trauma care, orthopedic, and all urgent
and emergent specialties.
The Department also offers a reading corner to promote the love of books, as well as a

maximize the quality of dispensing and monitoring. In addition, special medications such
as chemotherapy and intravenously administered nutrition are prepared.
Pharmacists review patient medication orders for appropriate dosage and use, drug
allergies, and interactions with other drugs or food.
The pharmacy also develops educational materials for patients and serves as a resource
for professional education.
Prehospital care
An additional function of the Department of Prehospital Care is the Medical Bike Unit
which was formed in 1996. The Medical Bike Unit consists of specially trained
Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics who respond to emergency calls on
bicycles. As first responders, outfitted with full-equipped mountain bikes, two-way
radios, portable cellular telephones, medical supplies, oxygen, and a cardia defibrillator,
the Bike Medics often arrive at emergencies before conventional ambulance crews, and
perform life saving care when seconds count. The Medical Bike Unit also provides
dedicated medical coverage for large special events throughout the city including charity
bike rides and walks, and the Bike New York Great Five Boro Bike Tour.
With a history of providing ambulance services to the community dating back to the early

There are many ways you can contribute to the growth of the Jamaica Hospital Medical
Center. Each year, we provide millions of dollars of high quality care that goes
uncompensated. Your donation would help us to purchase new equipment, hire additional
staff, update our facilities or continue our many community programs.
Jamaica Hospital Medical Center has been designated a financially distressed hospital.
The Development Department is responsible for fundraising to benefit JamaicaHospital
Medical Center as well as the recording, acknowledgement and designation of all
donations. You can reach this department at 718-206-8613.
Fundraising Events
Every year, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center organizes a dinner dance. The proceeds
from these events benefit an area within the hospital. This year, all monies raised will
benefit the Disaster Response Fund.
Memorial gifts
When coping with the loss of a loved one, grieving family members and friends often
decide to make a memorial donation to Jamaica Hospital in the name of the deceased.
These gifts may benefit a specific area of the hospital, or go to the hospital's general
operating funds. For example, if the deceased was treated in the Coronary Care Unit, a
donor might request that his or her gift benefit that unit. That money would then be used
toward the purchase of new equipment, recruitment of additional staff or maintenance of
special outreach programs in that area.
Sometimes, family members request that people paying their respects to the deceased's
family make a donation to an organization in lieu of sending flowers.
Memorial gifts should be in the form of checks payable to Jamaica Hospital Medical
Center. The donor must indicate the name of the person being memorialized and the area-
if any-within the hospital to benefit. If the donor or donors would like surviving family
members to be notified that a gift was made in the deceased's name, that information
should be provided as well. Memorial gifts should be mailed to the attention of the
Development Department, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, 8900 Van Wyck
Expressway, Jamaica, New York, 11418. Credit card orders may also be called in to the
Development Department at 718-206-8613.
Naming Opportunities
A patient room could have a wall plaque that reads "In Honor of Mary Smith"
A building could be named as "The Jane Doe Pavilion"
A unit could be named such as "The John Smith Emergency Department"
A pediatric asthma chair could have a plaque that reads "Donated by
"XYZ Company"
The amount of the donation varies with the area. For a brochure on naming opportunities,
