Suspect Parameter Number (SPN) and Failure Mode Indicator (FMI) Description
Circuit Description
The engine control module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the engine coolant level sensor on
the signal circuit and supplies ground on the low reference circuit. The engine coolant
level sensor is a resistive type switch. The ECM monitors the voltage on the signal
circuit to determine if the coolant level sensor is operating properly.
• The ECM will turn ON the check engine light (CEL) and the stop engine light (SEL).
The SEL will turn OFF when the coolant level returns to normal.
• 111-1 is a Type A SPN

Circuit Diagnostics
WARNING! To prevent bodily injury or death, stay away from hot engine surfaces and
rotating engine components.
1. Inspect the following items and verify the engine cooling system is full and
operating properly:
2. Ignition OFF, disconnect the engine coolant level sensor, test for less than 10 Ω
between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground.
If greater than 10 Ω, disconnect ECM harness connector J1-B, test for less
than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ECM harness
connector J1-B terminal D3.
If 10 Ω or less, go to Step 3
3. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 V between the engine coolant level signal circuit
terminal 1 and ground.
If less than 4.8 V, ignition OFF, disconnect ECM harness connector J1-C, test
for infinite resistance between the signal circuit terminal 1 and ground.
If greater than 5.2 V, ignition OFF, disconnect ECM harness connector J1-C,
ignition ON, verify less than 1 V between the signal circuit terminal 1 and
ground.
