INTRODUCTION:

Nature cure is a divine style of living with a wholesome and rational approach to all problems of health
and recovery from disease.
This is a science, which after generations of successive experiments has proved that a rise in the level of
health brings about a fall in the incidence of disease and a fall in level of health aggravates disease.

Nature cure is a device of healing and curing diseases through natural, drugless and the harmless
processes.it attempts to bring human body close to nature. Nature cure simply provides the required
assistance and hence, it is the cheapest treatment without drugs.

Naturopathy is a system of healing stimulating the body’s inherent power to regain health with the help
of five great elements of nature-Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Ether. Naturopathy is a call to “Return to
Nature” and to resort to simple way of living in harmony with the self, society and environment.
Naturopathy provides not only a simple practical approach to the management of diseases, but a firm
theoretical basis which is applicable to all the holistic medical care and by giving attention to the
foundation of health; also offers a more economical frame work for the medicine of future generation.

Though the basic Nature Cure deals only with Pancha Mahabhoota’s, the recent development advocates
the practice of drugless therapies like Massage, Electrotherapy, Physiotherapy, Acupuncture and
Acupressure, Magneto therapy etc., Diet plays a major role, above all. History Nature Cure Movement
started in Germany & other western countries with “Water cure” (Hydrotherapy). Water cure was
synonymous with Nature Cure in those early days.

Naturopathic medicine is a system of primary health care that emphasizes optimal wellness and health,
disease prevention, and patient education. While in practice naturopathic physicians treat acute and
chronic conditions, the primary focus of naturopathy is to support the body’s inherent abilities and
empower the patient to make lifestyle changes necessary to maintain optimal health. Through in-depth
history taking, physical examination, and clinical and laboratory optimal, naturopathic physicians
diagnose disease, uncover individual and familial risk factors, and strive to understand the patient as the
totality of body, mind, and spirit.

OBJECTIVES OF STUDY
 To study the origin ,development and the significance of nature cure as an original and holistic health
care method.

 Through the study of the existing nature cure centers, to understanding the functioning.

 To compare nature cure with popular healthcare systems and to differentiate nature cure as a way of
life rather than a system of treatment
 .
 To analyse the various approaches in nature cure and to examine the need for adopting these in
healthcare measures, and to co-ordinate them as a system

 To highlight the importance and relevance of nature cure as a drugless health care approach as
different from the drug based modern health care methods.

 To provide accommodation for patients, visitors and staff. To fulfill the need for a nature cure centre.

AIM:

 To Create a collaborative space connected to nature.

The aim of the nature cure health centre is to made comfort to patients, design according to the
activities.

The aim is to design a hospital which is close to nature and give a diversion to the routine life style,
common drug based treatments.

To provide an ambience in the center that inculcates empathy to wards healthy living and
encourages the patients to explore the benefits of natural living with very little prodding.

SCOPE AND LIMITS OF THE STUDY:

Nature cure is a holistic healthcare method worked out in tune with nature ,which does not seem to
produce adverse side effects ,if properly applied.

. Hence the scope of the study is unlimited .But in nature cure ,different naturopathy's follow different
approaches. Sometimes they seek the assistance of all those approaches Indeed hectic and unwidely.

I want to limit my study to not go deep into the structural detail.

As the project comprises huge requirements and large spaces, it is limited to planning level, sharing
the spaces.

METHODS OF NATURE CURE:

 FASTING
Fasting refers to complete abstinence from food for a short or long period for a specific
purpose. The common cause of all diseases is the accumulation of waste and poisonous matter in
the body which results from overeating. The majority of persons eat too much and follow
sedentary occupations which do not permit sufficient and proper exercise for utilisation of this
large quantity of food. This surplus overburdens the digestive and assimulative organs and clogs
up the system with impurities or poisons. Digestion and elimination become slow and the
functional activity of the whole system gets deranged.
The onset of disease is merely the process of ridding the system of these impurities. Every disease
can be healed by only one remedy - by doing just the opposite of what causes it, that is, by
reducing the food intake or fasting.

 THERAPEUTIC BATHS

 COLD COMPRESS:
This is a local application using a cloth which has been wrung out in cold water. The cloth should
be folded into a broad strip and dipped in cold water or ice water. The compress is generally
applied to the head, neck, chest, abdomen and back.

 HEATING COMPRESS
This is a cold compress covered in such a manner as to bring warmth. A heating compress consists of
three or four folds of linen cloth wrung out in cold water which is then covered completely with dry
flannel or blanket to prevent the circulation of air and help accumulation of body heat. It is sometimes
applied for several hours

 HIP BATHS
 COLD HIP BATH
The water temperature should be 100C to 180C. The duration of the bath is usually 10 minutes , but
in specific conditions it may vary from one minute to 30 minutes. If the patient feels cold or is very
weak, a hot foot immersion should be given with the cold hip bath

 HOT HIP BATH

This bath is generally taken for eight to 10 minutes at a water temperature of 400C to 450C. The bath
should start at 400C. The temperature should be gradually increased to 450C. NO friction should be
applied to the abdomen

 NEUTRAL HIP BATH

The temperature of the water should be 320C to 360C. Here too, friction to the
abdomen should be avoided. This bath is generally taken for 20 minutes to an
hour.

TYPES OF TREATMENTS:

 ALTERNATE HIP BATH

This is also known as revulsive hip bath. The temperature in the hot tub
should be 400C to 450C and in the cold tub 100C to 180C. The patient
should alternately sit in the hot tub for five minutes and then in the cold
tub for three minutes. The duration of the bath is generally 10 to 20
minutes. The head and neck should be kept cold with a cold compress.
The treatment should end with a dash of cold water to the hips.

 SPINAL BATH

The spinal bath is another important form of hydrotherapic treatment. This bath provides a soothing
effect to the spinal column and thereby influences the central nervous system. It is given in a specially
designed tub with its back raised so as to provide proper support to the head. The bath can be
administered at cold, neutral and hot temperatures. The water level in the tub should be an inch and a
half to two inches and the patient should lie in it for three to 10 minutes

 STEAM BATH

Steam bath is one of the most important time-tested water

treatments which induces perspiration in a most natural way. The
patient, clad in minimum loin cloth or underwear, is made to sit
on a stool inside a specially designed cabinet. Before entering the
cabinet, the patient should drink one or two glasses of cold water
and protect the head with a cold towel. The duration of the steam
bath is generally 10 to 20 minutes or until perspiration takes
place. A cold shower should be taken immediately after the bath.

 COLD FOOT BATH

Three to four inches of cold water at a temperature of 7.20C

to 12.70C should be placed in a small tub or bucket. The feet
should be completely immersed in the water for one to five
minutes. Friction should be continuously applied to the feet
during the bath, either by an attendant or by the patient by
rubbing one foot against the other.

 HOT FOOT BATHS

In this method, the patient should keep his or her legs in a tub or bucket
filled with hot water at a temperature of 400C to 450C. Before taking this
bath, a glass of water should be taken and the body should be covered with a
blanket so that no heat or vapour escapes from the foot bath. The head
should be protected with a cold compress. The duration of the bath is
generally from 5 to 20 minutes. The patient should take a cold shower
immediately after the bath.

 IMMERSION BATHS
 COLD IMMERSION BATH
This may be taken for four seconds to 20 minutes at a temperature ranging from 100C to 23.80C.
Before entering the bath, cold water should be poured on the patient’s head, chest and neck and the
head should be protected with a cold moist towel:
The patient should enter the bath at a temperature of 310C. The water temperature should be lowered
gradually at the rate of 10C per minute until it reaches 250C. The bath should continue until the
patient starts shivering. The graduated bath is intended to avoid nervous shock by sudden plunge into
the cold water. This bath is often administered every three hours in cases of fever.

 NEUTRAL IMMERSION BATH

This bath can be given from 15 to 60 minutes at a
temperature ranging from 260C to 280C. It can be given
for long duration, without any ill-effects, as the water
temperature is akin to the body temperature. The neutral
bath diminishes the pulse rate without modifying
respiration

 HOT IMMERSION BATH

This bath can be taken from two to 15 minutes at a temperature from 36.60C to 400C. Generally this
bath is started at 370C and the temperature is then gradually raised to the required level by adding
hot water. Before entering the bath, the patient should drink cold water and also wet the head, neck
and shoulders with cold water. A cold compress should be applied throughout the treatment

 CURATIVE POWERS OF EARTH

Mud or clay bath is another mode of treatment. It is applied in the same way as packs, but only on a
larger scale on the entire body. In this, mud or clay is first ground and sifted to remove all impurities,
and then made into a smooth paste mixed with hot water. The paste is then spread on a sheet which in
turn is wrapped round the body. One or two blankets are then wrapped over this, depending on the
temperature of the room and that of the pack. A mud bath is followed with a cleansing warm water
bath and a short cold shower.

 THERAPEUTIC VALUE OF MASSAGE

 DIET
Diet plays a vital role in the nature cure regimen,as it believes that you are what you eat and diet is
crucial when it comes to detoxification of the body. The food served here is wholesome and
prescribed by our doctors inspecified quantity as per diseases condition.
The preparations served here are raw, boiled, steamed and baked which are developed and supervised
by our dietcians. The vegetables and fruits used in the diet centre are organically grown in our farm.

DESIGN GUIDELINES FOR YOGA AND MEDITATION SPACE

Spaces
Although each practice may require specific characteristics, most take place in a large open central
space, accompanied by a set of support rooms.

Main Room
This is the central space of the building where people gather for practice, and generally is a free plan,
flexible and adaptable to different uses. To determine its dimensions, we can use the standard
measures of a yoga mat, which unfolds fully stretched in an area of approximately 1.70 x 60 meters.
It is suggested to leave at least 50 cm between the mats, to allow the free movement of users during
the exercises.

Some of these rooms have a small platform or elevated area where the instructor or guide of the
session is located, and it is good to add shelves or countertops where people can leave their 'tools'
during the class (water bottles, towels, blankets, slippers). Usually, the room has mirrors on one or
more walls, but this depends on the needs and the taste of the client.

Bathrooms / Dressing Rooms

Not all centers include dressing rooms, but if there are resources and space, it is good to add. In
the case adding them in, you can increase the size of the bathrooms allowing dual use. To achieve
this objective and allow the space to be occupied by more than one person at a time, in several
projects toilet area is separated from the sink, that is being associated with a kind of small dressing
room, which may also include lockers, shelves, and benches.

Toilets should be located adjacent to the main room, with a quick and easy access from the main
entrance area.

Circulations
Circulations gain great importance in this kind of projects, because not only can function as
corridors or hallways, but also can contain storage spaces, waiting and resting areas, or even a
reception. Some cases also take advantage of the walls to incorporate built-in shelves.

Others
Depending on the order received, the building may include several classrooms, plus massage
cabins or jacuzzi, sauna and swimming pools areas. The height of the spaces is a choice of each
client and architect, but the main room, at least, is designed in most cases with a greater height.

Environmental Conditions
Acoustics
There is a belief that these spaces must be completely silent, but precisely the idea of these
disciplines is to be developed in spite of the ambient noise. In fact, in many cases, it is
recommended to fully perform in exteriors, as many sounds of nature can help a better realization of
different practices. In the case of closed rooms, these sounds (and even smells) can be integrated by
incorporating indoor courtyards or gardens that attract birds, including moving water, and/or allow
the flow of the wind.
Obviously, if a practice requires complete silence, the design must allow that the space can be
completely isolated.

K.RAVALI SIGN SHEET

.
ARCHITECTURAL THESIS 14041AA NO.
DESIGN OF NATURE CURE HOSPITAL
2018 046
SVCA
Ventilation
This is a fundamental issue in these practices, since they all use breath as the basis for its
development. It is important to allow cross ventilation across the room, making sure that there is a
certain current renew of oxygen inside, during the session or at the times when the room is not being
occupied. For this, we should generate a first opening in the facade that receives the prevailing winds,
and a second opening (preferably bigger) on the opposite wall.

illumination
The light allows to qualify environmentally the space and can help to lead the intension of the
practice being done. In the case of Yoga, direct connection to the sun is essential in many of their
exercises. That's why we should always favor natural lighting, and is necessary, to incorporate
systems to regulate their intensity, allowing darken the room completely if necessary.

Aesthetics and Materials

The aesthetics of space depends entirely on the client requirement, but generally, you should avoid
distracting elements or exaggerated decorations. It is recommended using warm materials and soft
colors (or directly white) to help attendees achieve a certain degree of initial concentration. As
practices carried out in permanent contact with the ground, floors are usually covered with wood
or materials rather 'soft' and warm to the touch.

QUIET HEALING CENTER

LOCATION:CHINNA MUDALIYAR CHAVADY, AUROVILLE, PONDICHERRY, TAMILNADU

STARTED IN 1993
COMPLETED IN 1997
ARCHITECT: AR.POPO PINGEL
Quiet healing center is part of the auroville universal township,150km south of Chennai(madras) and
about 10km north of puducherry. It is 6kms away from auroville.
Healing work at quiet is based on the understanding that the human being is first and foremost a
spiritual being seeking to express its true self through its mental, emotional and physical bodies or
instruments.
Aurovilles health spa and wellness centre on the beach, offers a wide variety of natural healing
therapies. A place to relax, rejuvenate, recharge, and heal, a place to discover deep contentment, inner
peace and joy.

Services are zoned to the rear of the site so that it is obstructed from visitors view.
Cluster organization – curvilinear therapy rooms in the front with the internal corridors facing the
open court.
Dispersed circular rooms provides good air flow throughout the built form

This also act as the shading element, because of the tropical climate.

Addition of lime to the concrete gives the lightness feel to the built form.

The circulation of the site is well managed and separated. The frequently coming vehicular does not disturb
the regular activities on site. There is only one node creating a traffic node, when there is service vehicle
movement

Architect have provided only one entry that is used by the visitors, staffs and other service vehicles.
Vehicular circulation inside the site to restricted to reduce the noise level inside the buliding, and also to
bring in the idea tranquil while entering.
Pedestrian circulation connects all the therapy and public spaces of the building.
Because of the single entry point the chaos is happening at the junctions pointed as critical nodes.

The spaces are arranged based on the hierarchy of

privacy level.

All the therapy circles are placed in the front but the
direct entry is restricted.

All the services like linen, kitchen and other storages

are places at the rear of the building.

All the therapy and corridor spaces open in to the

Open spaces are very well merged with the built form
All the linkage like corridors are connected physically
to the consultation rooms and visually to the landscaped
courtyards.

The restricted link is established for the therapy room to

avoid the disturbances by other users.
All the linkages are well light and well shaded
The corridor floor slab is elevated from the ground
Level gives floating effect to the building.

The built-up and open space zoning

explains that the structure is well planned
with green open spaces in between thus
maintaining the connection of nature from
exterior to interior

The zoning of areas as per the activities is

well planned, separating the private and
public zones.

Old water tank issued as a spaces for hydrotherapy, though it appears to be free flowing layout, exact
geometry is employed to determine scale and proportions.
A building is eventually a reflection of consciousness of the person who conceives it as well as those who
use it.
This pond also cools the hot air that enters the multi use hall. Landscaped courtyards are the another
important aspects of this building.
This gives the openness to the built form and also as the core for healing..the integrated landscaped with the
rock garden is the space for mud therapy.

Its location on the beach front makes it highly susceptible to
cyclones. The structures are well spaced out as to minimize the
effect of any damage caused due to cyclones.

Architects ideology:
He was strongly influenced by the growing environmental awareness, baubiological and sensory issues
plus physiological concerns in architecture. These included health hazards through industrial building
materials ,electro-smog, the blind use of industrial synthetic building products monotonously applied,
and the waste and misuse of natural resources.

Because of the high humidity level, the architect also gave equal importance to the climatic design
principles.

It in corporates minimal use of artificial electromagnet fields these panels have been oriented in

The sloping chajjas act as dnp moulds as the architect did not wish to have additional projection on
facade. The gutter detail is exaggerated and form as part of the detail. The water from the gutters falls
directly to the landscaped are a below.
Architects truthful use of material called for exaggeration of details to depict the virtue of the
material. The plinth beam in residential block, projects diagonally from the slopin gwall, holding the
first course of bricks in place. The detail is enchanced by the projection of plinth beam, which
protrudes from coping. The beams continue over the vaulted passage ways and also project out of the
external walls. The beams have punctures to facilitate easy maneuvering by tying a rope through
it.This helps in placement of precast beams.
The hot and humid climate on site
compelled the architect to use
materials that would resist dampness

Thus, porous materials such as first class bricks, lime mortar and timber have been used. They keep the
interiors dry and cooler compound to outside. The domes are cladded with china mosaic which refelects
maximum part of the heat incident on it, assisting in keeping the healing rooms cool through out the day.

The facilities provided by the centre are one of the best in India
The site for the centre is a transitional zone between busy city zone and the calm peaceful beach(nature)
The use of local materials and local artisans has made it economically and environmentally sustainable
The planning and designing of the center is done that the nature has been merged with the indoors
providing small pockets of open and semi-open spaces, thus helping in the treatment procedures too.
The small details have helped the project be aesthically better.

Much attention to the detail is given, the architect have used precast rings to frame the vistas, this
also reduce the usage of concrete in the building.
All the east facing windows are larger to give the view to the beach, it also has less radiation
inside.

REHAB CENTER BASEL,SWITZERLND.
This was studied to extract the program and the spatial adjacencies. It was REHAB, A
Centre for Spinal Cord and Brain Injuries. It was designed by Herzog and De Meuron and it located
in
Basel, Switzerland. This building focuses on bringing nature into the building and also uses the nature
courtyards to divide program elements.
Architects Herzog and de
meuron met these
requirements by designing
a multifunctional, building
with plaza,gardens,public
facilities and secluded
residential quarters
allowing the patients as
much autonomy as
possible. The new centre is
a horizontal two floor and
the patients rooms on the
second floor.

The new REHAB centre is a

horizontal building on two floors, in
which wheelchair users and
pedestrians can easily move from one
place to another: therapy and medical
facilities are on the ground floor; the
patients’ rooms on the second floor.

Herzog & de Meuron use daylight, green and wood to create a

relaxed healing environment. The 8 courtyards in the building
provide daylight to the corridor, collective spaces, and patient’s
room. The patient’s room on the top floor can also get skylight
from a specially designed “light sphere” on the roof. The 8
courtyards contain different types of garden which bring the
green view to the interior space..
When entering the rehab Basel you get the impression of walking in a small town. After entering the
complex through a large courtyard, various inner courtyards provide orientation.
You proceed along the until you arrive at your destination. The different places vary considerably. The
gym and the patients rooms have large windows and views of the landscape. Other structures are oriented
inwards like the bathhouse whose small round holes in the roof make the place intimate from within but
specular looking from outisde. There are places where one can retreat and others in which to enjoy
company.

The connection between indoor and outdoor spaces
was our primary architectural concern. The complex
is conceived from inside out: instead of an
arrangement of structures, courtyards are placed in a
large rectangle. They serve as orientation and allow
daylight to penetrate the entire interior. Only then
did we proceed with the development of the
individual rooms

When entering the REHAB Basel you get the

impression of walking in a small town. After entering
the complex through a large courtyard, various inner
courtyards provide orientation. You proceed along
them until you arrive at your destination. The different
places vary considerably. The gym and the patients’
rooms have large windows and views of the landscape.
Other structures are oriented inwards like the
bathhouse whose small round holes in the roof make
the place intimate from within but spectacular-looking
from outside. There are places where one can retreat
and others in which to enjoy company

. In keeping with the analogy of a town plan, we thought

in terms of streets and plazas in front of houses. This is
still the first impression of the REHAB centre today; you
walk in through a large courtyard, the centre of which is
a cultivated field.

In other words, you enter the complex through an outdoor space. From the main lobby, various inner
courtyards provide orientation: one is filled with water, another is clad entirely in wood, the bathhouse is
placed in the third, etc. You proceed along them until you reach your destination.
When you have arrived, you realize that the "houses" vary considerably; places like the gym or the
workshops, as well as the patients' rooms are defined by large windowpanes and views of the
landscape, with a seamless transition between inside and outside. Other rooms, however, are entirely
inwards in orientation; the most obvious example is the bathhouse, placed in one of the central
courtyards like an erratic block wrapped in black rubber. Numerous small round holes in the low-
slung roof make what looks spectacular from the outside very intimate from within. In the painting
workshop and library, both on the roof, the view into the distance is staged: one can look back into the
city or out into the expanses of the Alsace.

These beads have a big sister in the patients
rooms in the middle of the curved, hollow
ceiling, there is a transparent plastic sphere two
meters in diameter. Somewhat like the eye of the
room, it offers patients laying in bed a view of
the sky. And it makes the room, despite its wide
veranda, so bright that one almost feels as if one
is outside. The veranda has been made wide
enough to wheel patients lying in bed outdoors
in good weather.

They also provide the outdoor green space for the

patients to do exercise or walk. Wooden material is
widely used in this building. Its façade, sunblind,
floor, the ceiling in the patient’s room and the deck
in the garden are all made by different kinds of
wood. Wood makes this building like a pavilion or
garden architecture which successfully responds
the client’s wish that they don’t want to have a new
REHAB centre look or feel like a hospital

After the existing REHAB centre to the south is demolished, landscape architect august kennel with
whom we have already collaborated on the design of interior courtyards will supervise the planting of
kitchen and ornamental gardens aim to integrate the REHAB centre into the surrounding countryside
with its family gardens. To the north, a playing field and a training course are available to wheelchair
users in the summer.

The diversified design offers patients and their relatives a building that does justice to the
complexity of their needs. There are places where one can retreat and be alone and others in
which to enjoy company. And there are also non territorial places that are not assigned to a
specific function, small places for the times in between treatments, for conversation with
relatives, or for staff members during their breaks. The rehab is an open, permeable, breathing
building.

Wood of different kinds and uses is the predominant material on the facades and inside. One might
speak of a kind of pavilion or garden architecture, beginning with the continuous terraces along the
rooms on the second floor. Delicate structures of wooden rods, horizontally interwoven in some
places, vertically inserted into the ground in others, guide cloth awnings or function as screens to
provide privacy. The Plexiglas dowels that link these wooden rods glisten like beads when light
falls on them.

INTRODUCTION:

It was pre-independence period, when Gandhiji accompanied Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to Pune for his
treatment at Dr. Dinshaw Mehta’s Nature cure center near Pune railway station. Gandhiji founded
“Society of Servants of Gods” along with Dinshaw Mehta. While in Pune Gandhiji was deeply
impressed by simple ways of Natural Cure. He thought cities like Pune have all medical facilities but
villages do not have access to medical facility. He wrote an article in Harijan, “I made a mistake, I
should have gone to the village to popularize simple ways of Nature Cure, therefore I want to shift.”
Search began for a proper place around Pune. Late Shri. Balkoba Bhave, Dr. Mehta, Dr. Sushila Nair,
Dr. Manibhai Desai came to Uruli Kanchan. To their disappointment they found that social
atmosphere was not conducive for establishing a Nature Cure Center, but Gandhiji insisted that he
wanted the village like Uruli, because unless he is able to improve condition of rural India, he will not
be able
