Lesson 2 : Elements and Components of the Curriculum

YOUR IDEA:

If you had your own school, how will you come out with your program / course offering
with its respective course outline and or syllabus?

 If I have my own school and if I will be putting up a program or course the program or
course that I will be offering will be based on the demand of the socio-economic,
global needs and the changing environment of the learners where the learners will be
aligning their skills and knowledge on what is needed and what is in demand in the
working force and in their environment. The course outline and syllabus herewith
should be in line with the basic elements of a curriculum; the objectives and aims, the
content and learning experiences, the method and organization and the evaluation
where it should be in accordance or prescribed by the CHED or DepEd.

THINK:

Why do institutions differ in course / syllabus formats?

 Institutions are differ in course / syllabus formats because it is the discretion of the
schools or institutions to have their own format but they have to follow the course
content as prescribed by the CHED or DepEd.

Lesson 3: The Learning Process and Its Relationship to Curriculum Development

LEARNIG ACTIVITY:

Explain why teaching and learning is just like a coin which has two sides?
SUMMATIVE TEST:

I. Write true if the statement is correct but if the statement is false, give the
correct answer.

1. As teachers, we should teach what the students needs and what is on the their
curriculum.
2. TRUE
3. TRUE
4. TRUE
5. There can be learning without teaching.
6. Learning is acquisition of knowledge, skills and values.
7. TRUE
8. TRUE
9. TRUE
10. TRUE

II. Essay: In what ways does curriculum development relate with the teaching and
learning process? Discuss?

 Curriculum development has something to do with the teaching and learning process
because the learners are the heart of the teaching and learning process as well as
the curriculum development. The main consideration in developing the curriculum is
the learners along way with the teaching and learning process where in this process it
concentrates on the needs of the learner. So indeed they are related with each other
for their main objective is in the needs of the learner.
MODULE II: CRAFTING THE CURRICULUM

Lesson 1: Models of Curriculum Design and Types

LEARNING ACTIVITY:

What could be the most appropriate model that can be adapted to our
educational system? Justify.

THINK:

What method starts from nothing with no curriculum at all?

 The method that starts from nothing with no curriculum at all is the DACUM
(Designing a Curriculum).

YOUR IDEA:
Basing from your experiences, what can you propose as an improvement to
curriculum development. Prepare a model applicable to Philippine Setting.

AIMS (skills, performance, talents)

T
 As for my knowledge in curriculum development I would like to propose this model
which I call “The Learners Model” in this model I put the learner on top because I
believe that for us to have a good curriculum we have to deal and study in deep the
learners. In the part of the learner we have to look into different factors such as the
objectives, content, competencies, learning experiences, teaching strategies and
techniques, foundations, organizations and the environment for us to come up with a
curriculum and on that there should be again a thorough evaluations for to give
improvements or a change.

Lesson 2: Principles of Curriculum Design

YOUR IDEA:
What is your idea of considering global needs in curriculum development?

 When we are developing curriculum we have to consider the global needs, there are
the needs of the entire nation specifically on the working world or job market for us to
be able to align the education that the learner needs to be competent enough to meet
or to fit in, in the demands of the world.
THINK:
You received a memo instructing you to adopt a given course outline together with
a textbook. But you found the material to be found wanting in terms of content.
What will you do? Explain.

 If I was instructed to adopt a given course outline together with a textbook but found
out the material to be found wanting in terms of content, what will I do to this is that,
first I will be consulting this issue to my head, principal and school administration,
next to that together with their support I will be recommending to them to look into
and study further the materials and lastly together with their supervision and guidance
we will develop a better course outline and with a better textbook in line on what is
needed by the learners.

Lesson 3: Approaches to Curriculum Design

YOUR IDEA:

Explain why a teacher should anchor his teaching on some models and
approaches.

 Teacher should anchor his teaching on some models and approaches for these
models and approaches serve as a guide, a framework and as a basis of knowledge
for the teacher to be able to construct or develop better ways to teach students. It can
also help the teacher improve and enhance their skills and techniques in teaching for
they are knowledgeable and directed on different factors affecting the learning-
teaching process.

SUMMATIVE TEST:

Direction: Identify what is being asked for in the following statement as sets of
logical relationships used to represent events and event interactions in a highly
compact and illustrative manner.

1. Models
2. Henson
3. DACUM (Designing a Curriculum)
4. Hazelwood School District
5. Curriculum Validation
6. Subject Centered Curriculum
7. Child Centered Curriculum
8. Community Centered
9. Broad Fields and Fused Curriculum
10. Integrative or Activity-centered Curriculum
II.

What model assumes that there is already an existing curriculum but it needs
revision?

 DACUM (Curriculum Validation)

Choose one of the principles in curriculum design and explain.

 Consider Global Needs. Curriculum development must look into regional,

provincial and national needs.
For us to be able to have a more realistic approach in developing our
curriculum we have to look and take into consideration the global needs,
wherein learners should be able to go into the flow or what is the demand in
the global working market. For there are instances that the education of the
learners is not aligned with the needed field of expertise and knowledge in the
work or job which is in demand globally. There is what we call a “miss match”
of the education obtained and with the work or job available.

If you were asked by your superior to revise a curriculum, what principles will you
suggest or follow to come out with a relevant, enhanced and updated curriculum. List
them down.

These are the principles that I will be suggesting for them to come up with a relevant,
enhanced and updated curriculum:

1. Consider Global Needs.

2. Consider the demands of cultural and society, both present and future.
3. Curriculum must prepare trainer to participate as productive members of a culture.
4. Strategic Integration.
5. Judicious Review.
