Total mins.
Deliberate Practice means 100% focused in your stretch zone. Below outlines what
to expect from time spent on deliberate practice showing daily minutes, minutes per
month, hours over 10 years and 10 year expected outcomes.
BPM stands for 'beats per minute'. Practice all exercises slowly at first and work up
to the goal of 70BPM unless otherwise stated.
Note for parents. For children we recommend adult assistance. In our experience
guided practice improves their chances of success. Less adult assistance will be
required over time.
= Down. = Up.
Exercises 1 to 10
Practice each exercise below for 30Picking J3of 5 mins per day. Pay close
seconds, total
attention to the picking direction. Gradually increase the tempo as you improve.
Goal is 100BPM

Chromatic Scale
In music there are 12 notes yet only 7 alphabetic letters (A, B, C, D, E, F & G). The
remaining 5 notes are A#/Bb, C#/Db, D#/Eb, F#/Gb & G#/Ab. You will notice these 5
notes have two names e.g. A#/Bb. The context will determine which name to use but
note, an A# and Bb will sound the same to the ear. The 12 notes of the chromatic scale
are as follows.
3rds
A 3rd interval refers to the third alphabetic letter. For example if we started with A then
C would be the 3rd. If we started with G then B would be the 3rd. Here are all the
possible 3rd intervals: A-C, B-D, C-E, D-F, E-G, F-A & G-B.
Major 3rds
The space in a major 3rd is two whole tones. It's called a major 3rd because the third
note away from the root in any major scale is two whole tones (four semitones) away.
For example if we started with C then E would be the major 3rd. C Db D Eb E
Minor 3rds
The space in a minor 3rd is three semitones. It's called a minor 3rd because the third
note away from the root in any minor scale is three semitones. For example if we
started with C then Eb would be the minor 3rd. C Db D Eb E
Your teacher will test you on 3rds when you are ready.
Rhythm
Your teacher will test you on the rhythm exercises listed below when you are ready.
