CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

I. Introduction

The study was on the Effectiveness of Empowerment Technology on the

students. Now, when we say technology, the thing that comes in our mind are

computers and high-tech gadgets, but almost anything that people make are

technology. Empowerment, it is to give power to something or someone, to promote the

self-actualization or in this case is to enhance your knowledge about a certain topic or

activity. In this case, the technology we’re talking about is something related in using the

internet. The one that we called “information Highway” because it became the major

source of information, from small to big issues. And by major, it means communication

and platforms for information-based services. These could be possibly realized if the

learner can effectively integrate ICT into the classroom.

Empowerment technology create foundation of understanding of the world of

ICT, understand and demonstrate the proper etiquette in using ICT. Improves their

knowledge on how ICT affects their everyday lives and state of our nation. ICT deals

with the use of different communication technologies such as mobile phones, telephone,

Internet, etc. to locate save, send and edit information. Empowerment technology is a

learning material that covers topics on Information and communications technology,

applied productivity tools with advanced application techniques, Imaging and design for

the online environment, online platforms as tools for ICT content development,
Collaborative development of ICT content, Multimedia and ICTs, ICTs as platform for

change, Developing an ICT Project for Social Change, Publishing an ICT Project,

Sustaining an ICT Project for Social Change, and Reflecting on the ICT learning

process.

The study of effectiveness of communication technology can help us to figure out

that the student can effectively learning into the classroom.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDY
I. Related Literature

A. Foreign Literature

Finger (2015), conducted study on ‘Information technology and Australian

teachers’. He found that while schools are obtaining increased levels of ICT

infrastructure and increasing the number of computers, state education systems in

Australia and the United States have also highlighted the importance of the professional

development of teachers. He noted that teacher training should precede the integration

of ICT into classrooms.

According to Noshmee Devi Baguant (20017) Integration of Information and

Communication Technologies in Teaching by Female Academic Teaching Staff in the

Higher Education Sector in Mauritius Information and Communication Technologies

(ICT) is increasingly being used to support the process of academic teaching in the

higher education sector. However, it is imperative to understand the causes for minimal

utilization of ICT tools by female academic teaching staff in their teaching process,

resulting in gender inequity in technology. The research examined the correlation

between ICT integration in the teaching process by female academic teaching staff in

the higher education sector in Mauritius and the factors that could improve such

integration in line. Futures thinking methodology was used for this study to address

policy, strategies and actions to support appropriate futures. It comprised an evaluation

of the sources and causes of change to map a probable future and a preferable future.

The future thinking methods included signalling, horizon scanning, future wheel
analysis, alternate futures framework and determining scenarios. As a result of the

research, recommendations were made to assist policy makers and decision makers to

develop evidence based policies to address gender inequity in the use of technology in

higher education.

B. Local Literature

The Philippine Star created an article last 12th of July 2015 about how

technology helps students study well. According to it more and more school use

technology such as computers and the internet in their classroom and several

improvements on students have seen and they are now getting better in education.

These improvements are the following: Independence and information gathering,

Critical thinking and reflection, Communication and collaboration, More engaging

learning experience and Preparation for jobs later on. By connecting the internet,

students learn how to do their own research and with the large information that they

access. Students are induced to learn to think critically. Through exchange of ideas and

messages, students are able to collaborate with each other to test their understanding

of lessons. Information today is more engaging to the mind and the senses because of

its multimedia nature. Knowing all of these improvements and advantages. More and

more schools are allowing not just desktop computers and laptops, but also tablet

devices and smartphones in their classrooms.

According to John Paul Espinosa (2016) Technological advances had greatly

changed the education landscape in that teaching is no longer confined to the traditional

face-to-face delivery of lessons. Now, via internet we can also learn not only in the

classroom but outside the school. Through the convergence of modern and traditional
methods, students are now able to experience the best of both worlds. They can learn

from school and get additional information or lessons through the web and internet.

II. Related Study

A. Foreign Study

According to Manuel Garcia (2017), when combined, education and technology

can build dynamic teaching and learning experiences that are tailored to developing and

transforming the educators and learners needed to power the digital economy. For

some reasons, however, there is still a big chunk of people especially students who

aren’t ready yet to embrace the technological change in the field of education. This

study aims to determine the factors affecting students’ e-learning technology

acceptance particularly on Learning Management Systems in the Filipino context. A

conceptual model was proposed based on the Technology Acceptance Model which

was extended through the inclusion of Internet Connectivity Experience, Social Media

Influence, Integrated Multimedia Instruction, System Interactivity and Perceived Quality

Work of Life as additional predictor values.

According to Lee (2016) the uses of digital technology and access to it appear to

be critical factors. Analysed how in the US 15-16 year-old learners' school behavior and

standard test scores in literacy are related to computer use. Learners were asked how

many hours a day they typically used a computer for school work and for other

activities. The results indicated that the learners who used the computer for one hour a

day for both school work and other activities had significantly better reading test scores

and more positive teacher evaluations for their classroom behaviors than any other

groups. This was found while controlling for socio-economic status, which has been
shown to be a predictor of test scores in other research. The analysis used data from a

national 2014 longitudinal study, and it is likely that learners' usage of computers has

increased and changed since that time.

B. Local Study

According to Gregory S. Ching Trends and perspectives of information

technology development in the Philippines: A review of Filipino-Chinese Schools

Information technology has indeed greatly changed our daily lives. Moreover, such

innovation has brought forth many changes not only in the industry, but also in the field

of education. Likewise in the Philippines, changes have been seen all over the

academe. This paper talked about the background of the Philippines, starting with a

birds' eye view of the educational system and the status of educational funding. A

documentary analysis of the information technology readiness is also provided with a

comparative analysis of the current situation of Filipino-Chinese schools in the

Philippines. This paper shall provide an introductory concept of the trends and

perspectives of information technology development in the Philippines.

According to Inosanto (2018) in his article “Incorporating Computers into

Education Setting”. application of computer in the academe addresses the demand for

faster, more accurate processing of data to help teachers to prepare education report

using spread sheet software such as excel. Teachers can also use PowerPoint

presentation application software in delivering interactive lessons. The article shows the

connection of computer in the lives of the teachers. !t discusses how it could help the

teacher ease the task of preparing effective lecture presentation and how it could

process the student data for evaluation.

III. Synthesis
On the part of the students, ICT and the digital age has changed the way

students learn and how they access information. Therefore, it can be said that the

implementation of knowledge management through ICT can enhance the knowledge

and skills of teachers at any time, but it involves high costs such as the purchase of ICT

equipment and provision of facilities.
