Simple Past Tense

 Definition

Simple past tense is a simple verb form to show that an event happened in the past. In simple past tense,
the time of occurrence (yesterday, last two days, last year) or the time period (for two months, for a day,
for an hour) can be specified.

 Formula

Simple past tense is formed from verb-2 (past tense) in the form of an ordinary verb or verb "to be".
Verb-2 is a bare infinitive (basic form of verb) with the addition of -ed, -en, -d, -t, -n, or -ne for regular
verb or inconsistent form on irregular verb, whereas in verb "to be" , verb-2 in the form of was and were.

 Subject + to be (was/were) + adjective/adverb

- Negative (-)

 Subject + did not + infinitive verb + object


 Subject + was/were + not + adjective/adverb

- Verb 2

Basically, simple past tense has the same structure as simple present tense. The thing that distinguishes
them is the time and verb used. The form of the verb used in simple past tense must be in the form of a
second verb or past verb, which consists of two types as follows.

a) Regular verbs

Added add / ed at the end of the basic verb.

Ask = Asked

Study = Studied

Look = Looked

b) Irregular verbs

The irregular meaning here is the verb does not follow the standard formula d / ed and has its own second
form.

Be = Was / were

Begin = Began

Choose = Chose

c) Adverb of Time

In the simple past tense sentence, it is usually stated also the time when an event occurred, as follows:

- I went to restaurant last night


- I graduated one year ago
- I broke up with my boyfriend the day before yesterday
 How To Use

a) To explain an event that happened at a certain time in the past.


- We visited our hometown for holidays
- Last time I met my fiend in 2017
- I went to Bali last month

b) To explain the events that took place in a period in the past.


- Alice attended Harvard University for four years as an undergraduate
- Robert lived abroad for five years
- She played a lot of violin when she was younger

c) To show a habit or action that is done repeatedly in the past.


- Jaden swam a lot while he was on holiday
- When I lived in Tokyo, I always walked a mile to my school every day
- His boyfriend went to visit her every summer break until they broke up

d) To express self-perception and emotions that were felt in the past.


- Chloe always knew that she wanted to be a lawyer
- I was so happy during my study in New York
- My father was so proud of me when I won the spelling bee competition

e) To explain belonging or ownership in the past.


- He did not have a car when he was in elementary
- My family did not own a house
- The books belonged to my brother
