REPORT ON VISIT OF BSE

31/01/2020
- Jaishree Ghadei
Mumbai: The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) is an Indian stock exchange located at Dalal
Street, Mumbai. Established in 1875, the BSE (formerly known as Bombay Stock Exchange
Ltd.) is Asia's oldest stock exchange. The BSE is the world's 10th largest stock exchange with an
overall market capitalization of more than $2.2 trillion on as of April 2018.
The building of BSE which was built in 1970’s didn’t have any changes till date, it still has the
essence of the 70’s.
The environment of BSE is full of ethical, classy and Etiquette business environment. People
around BSE had an extreme high aura around them, they seemed to be high and classy business
personas.
BSE during whole working period that is from 8 to 3:30 is full on hustle and bustle. You could
see people rushing around, no one stopped to even catch their breath for a second.
The security of BSE is quite tight, there is police protection outside the building, there is a
policeman sitting with a gun near the gate and they had scanner and other security equipment’s.
It took almost 5 to 10 minutes to complete the whole security procedure and to get the visitor
pass.
On entering you will see a big screen with stock market news running on it. There is a big picture
of Goddess Laxmi (Goddess of wealth), on enquiry I got to know that every year on Dhanteras
(Indian Festival) there is a big Puja of the Goddess on that auspicious occasion to pray for the
great money year ahead. Another interesting thing that I found was that on Dhanteras BSE opens
only for 2 hours during the time allotted by an astrologer; the trading done during that period is
called as ‘Mahurat Trading.’
Another thing that one might notice is the statue of a charging bull at the entrance of BSE
building. The sculptor came into news after the stock market crash of 21-22 January 2008, where
it was later called as panauti (Bad Omen) and it was later replaced at the entrance (before it was
inside the building) where it is now.
Outside the BSE building there is a lane full of food stalls and restaurants, one won’t find a table
to seat during lunch time which is after 3:30 as contrast to other people who usually have their
lunch between 12 to 2, during the lunch hour there isn’t one single place where you won’t find a
crowd.
Over all we can come to a conclusion that BSE is not just a stock exchange place but something
unique in its own vibe.
