Philosophy in Teaching

“Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school,”

-Albert Einstein.

As stated in this quote, education needs to be applicable to real life situations. A

school system’s job is to empower their students with the tools and knowledge that will aide

them in gaining independence. Equipping students with knowledge is giving them resources that

can never be taken away from them.

Effectively Teaching

Clarity in teaching promotes student learning. Making objectives precise and clear for

students will result in greater success. For example, defining a lesson’s objective allows not only

teacher, but the students to set the stage for learning built on progress. Designing lesson plans

based on student ability is essential. Having realistic expectations will further student’s abilities.

Effective lessons will be challenging but not frustrating. Teaching should always be student-

centered.

Creating a Safe Environment

Ensuring that students are physically safe is critical, but beyond that, it is important

that each student is mentally safe. Helping students become aware that it is ok to be unsure, ask

questions, and make errors, will encourage them to participate and take academic risks. When

students recognize that mistakes are an opportunity for increased learning and proof that they are

trying, they will be more confident in the classroom.

PHILOSOPHY IN TEACHING
Building Relationships

Communication throughout the year should remain consistent. Sharing positive

feedback with parents early on will build a foundation of trust. Parents need to be updated

frequently to help them become more involved in their student’s learning. The teacher should be

updating parents on both positive and negative aspects of behavioral and academic progress.

Assessment

Assessments should be given fairly. It is important to ensure students are well

prepared and equipped with tools needed to succeed. Effective assessments are designed to

demonstrate an accurate representation of what a student knows. Tests are purposeful for both

students and teachers and display what content is mastered and what needs to be retaught.

Learning

Learning needs to have purpose. Expectations should be clear for students to see and

refer to. Teaching curriculum in a way that makes sense to students and applying it to their lives

is of upmost importance. Giving students resources that can be applied to everyday experiences

will make students want to learn. For example, teaching a class how to count money will enable

them to accurately understand how to pay for things in a store and how much change to expect

back. A teacher who is excited about teaching curriculum will help get students excited as well.

Educating students is an extremely important job. If done correctly students will grow

academically and gain knowledge with each day. Teaching requires a great deal of hard work

and dedication. I feel privileged to be part of such a wonderful profession and see first-hand the

positive affects teachers can have on students inside and outside of the classroom.
