SMI donates laptops for Sarangani Community Based
Monitoring System Project
Sagittarius Mines, Inc (SMI) donated eight laptops to
Sarangani Province for its Community Based
Monitoring System Project. The laptops were turned
over to the municipal and provincial planning and
development coordinators by SMI Provincial
Strategic Community Investment Officer Joy

Grace Ganchero, Regional and Provincial
Affairs Field Staff Venjie Rex Firmalino, and Strategic

Sagittarius Mines, Inc (SMI) donated eight
laptops to support the Sarangani Provincial
Government’s Community Based Monitoring
System (CBMS) Project which aims to improve
data banking and retrieval in the barangays.
In a turnover ceremony held on 11 February,
General Manager for External Affairs Mark
Williams presented the laptops to Governor
Miguel Rene A. Dominguez. The governor then
personally issued one laptop to each of the
seven Municipal Planning and Development
Offices (MPDOs) in the province and the
Provincial Planning and Development Office
(PPDO).
Governor Dominguez thanked SMI for
supporting the CBMS of Sarangani. He
emphasized the importance of reliable data
collection for the broader development of the
Province, and added that the laptops will aid in
the fast and efficient retrieval of system data.

Sarangani Congressman Manny Pacquiao on 4
February.

“Pambansang Kamao” the many potential
opportunities associated with the Tampakan
Project. The presentation focused on how the
responsible development of the Project could
significantly contribute to sustainable economic

CBMS is a data collection and storage process
relating to various key socio-economic areas of
the communities, such as health, education,
housing and the economy.
The system stores vital information on the status
of every barangay such as the number of
households with access to potable water,
electricity, sanitary toilet facilities, and those with
cases of malnutrition. It also provides
information on maternal mortality rates, housing
types, number of enrolled pupils, employment
data, and those living below the
poverty threshold.
The Chairman of the League of Planning and
Development Coordinators of the Philippines-
Sarangani Chapter, Nonito Nuñez, also expressed
gratitude to SMI for the support, citing the
devices are a big help for the MPDOs of
Sarangani.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Williams thanked
the people of Sarangani for their ongoing
partnership with SMI.
He said SMI recognizes the importance of the
CBMS project in crafting programs and initiatives
that are timely, effective and truly responsive
to the needs and aspirations of the people of
Sarangani.
“The CBMS will assist the provincial government
identify priority development needs and
maximize the opportunities presented by the
large revenue flows of the Tampakan Project,
should we be given the necessary permits to
operate,” Mr Williams added.
The ceremony was also attended by Regional
and Provincial Affairs Manager Elvie Grace
Ganchero, Policy Advocacy Superintendent
Rolando Doria, and Strategic Community
Investment Superintendent Leonardo Cortez, Jr.
growth in Sarangani and Southern Mindanao.
The meeting provided Congressman Pacquiao
an opportunity to raise questions and
concerns about the Project particularly on
community safety, economic benefits and mine
rehabilitation.
The SMI management team was joined by
Policy Advocacy Superintendent Rolando
Doria, Government Relations Superintendent
Guillermo Feliciano and Policy Advocacy
Supervisor Joseph Palanca.
