Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen.

The topic for our debate is that the proposed “no

homework policy contributes to the holistic development of the learners both inside and outside
the classroom. We the negative team, believe that this statement is false.

Today as first speaker I will be talking to you the downside of the “no homework policy”
which has been proposed by the Department of Education and why it should not be implemented.
Which in this said policy, it prohibits teachers from assigning additional academic works outside
of school hours.

Our second speaker will be talking about homework as a way to provide more time to
complete the learning process.

Our third speaker will be talking about homework as a way to develop dependent
learners.

Our fourth speaker will be talking about how homework creates a communication
network.

Lastly, our fifth speaker will be talking about how homework teaches students a proper
time management.

Rebuttal
The first speaker from the affirmative team has tried to tell you that …

Yes those maybe are reasonable considerations however I believe that they unfortunately
completely overlook the trade-offs that maybe more harmful in the long run by eroding the
quality of education, and as a consequence, the future competitiveness of young Filipinos.

She also said that….

Students must be spared from homework so they (have more bonding time/extra time with
family).

But come on guys, let us all be honest here. I know for a fact that without homeworks most, if
not all students will just find more time to stay glued to their gadgets or cellphones and waste
away precious time on social media. Time, which would have been spent on learning.
Arguments

Now, I am going to discuss 2 points.

My first point is that homework contributes to the learner’s educational growth hence the
implementation of the “no homework policy” is a big problem which the students may encounter
in the long run.

An online article which is said to be the most comprehensive research on homework to date
which has been conducted by Duke university psychology professor Harris Copper, who found
evidence of a positive correlation between homework and student achievement, meaning
students with homeworks perform better in school. In this same article he states that “a good way
to think about homework is the way you think about medications or dietary supplements. If you
take too little, they’ll have no effect. If you’ll take too much, they can kill you. But if you’ll take
the right amount, you’ll get better. So that goes in the same way as homework. So definitely,
when school’s give the right amount of homework, it keeps the learner’s academics in good
shape and helps them to constantly improve grades.

My second and last point is that homework is a vital part of education because it gives students
the opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the classroom.

When I say about knowledge, this does not only pertains to the educational content but also in
giving students practice in developing good work habits and methods. In this sense, homeworks
make students develop problem-solving and creative thinking skills. Hence, as a result of the “no
homework policy”, Filipino students will be less prepared for higher education or the workforce
and ultimately the entire country will suffer the consequences.

So, in conclusion to this, ladies and gentlemen, the proposed no homework policy of the
Department of Education does not in any way contribute to the holistic development of the
learners both inside and outside the classroom. Having been a product of this classic type of
education myself, I strongly believe that homeworks are part and parcel of a student’s life.
