1) Twelve charges are situated at each numeral of a circular clock so that q is at 1’O clock position, 2q at
2’O clock position, and so on ending with 12q at 12’O clock position. Find the magnitude and direction
of electric field at the center of clock. (3)

2) Calculate the electric field a distance z above the center of a square loop (side s) carrying uniform line
charge . (4)

3) Electric Flux:
i. A charge ‘𝑞’ is placed at the center of the base of a cone of radius r and height h. Calculate the
flux through the curved surface of cone.
ii. A point charge ‘q’ is placed at a distance, d, below the base of a cone of radius r and height h.
Calculate the flux through the curved surface of cone.
iii. A constant electric field E passes through the surface of an open hemisphere, perpendicular to its
base. Calculate the flux through curved surface. (2, 4, 2)

4) The electric field in a cubical region of space is given as ⃗ ( ̂ ( )̂ ̂ ) Verify that


this expression can represent an electrostatic field and determine
i. the charge density
ii. the total charge that gives rise to this electric field (5)

5) State and Prove Gauss’s theorem in electrostatics. Express it in its differential form. (6)

6) A long coaxial cable carries a uniform volume charge density on the inner cylinder (radius a), and a
uniform surface charge density on the outer cylindrical shell (radius b). This surface charge is negative
and of just the right magnitude so that the cable as a whole is electrically neutral. Find the electric field
in each of the three regions:
i. Inside the inner cylinder (r<a)
ii. Between the cylinders (a<r<b)
iii. Outside the cable (r>b). (2, 3, 2)

8) Derive an expression for an electrostatic energy of a system of N-point charges. Show that electrostatic

10) Derive an expression for the potential and electric field at a point (r, θ) due to an electric dipole. Hence

12) Calculate the force on the surface of charged conductor. (4)

13) There are two cavities of radii a and b, inside spherical conductor of radius R. The charges are placed
𝑞 and 𝑞 at the centers of inside cavities. Then
i. Find the surface charge densities .
ii. What is the electric field in each regions. (4)

14) A point charge q is placed near a grounded conducting sphere of radius a. Using the method of images,
Find
i. The potential at a point outside the sphere
ii. The induced surface-charge density
iii. The magnitude and direction of the force acting on q.
iv. Discuss the problem if the sphere is not earthed. (8)

15) Calculate the capacitance of two plates which are at an angle with each other. Each plate is of length L
and breadth B. Assume is very small. (4)

16) Derive Gauss’s law in presence of dielectric. For a dielectric medium, derive a relation between electric
displacement ⃗ , electric field ⃗ and polarization vector ⃗ . (5)

17) A long straight wire, carrying uniform line charge , is surrounded by rubber insulation out to a radius
R. Find the electric displacement vector and electric field everywhere. (4)

18) A parallel-plate capacitor is filled with a non-uniform dielectric, such that the relative permittivity is
given by, where, is a constant having units of (1/length) and is distance from one
plate. Assume that area of the plates is 𝐴 and separation between them is . What is the capacitance of
the capacitor? (5)
