Civil engineering is a branch of engineering that studies about how to design, build, renovate

not only buildings and infrastructure, but also includes the environment for the benefit of
human life. Civil engineering has a broad scope, in which knowledge of mathematics,
physics, chemistry, biology, geology, environment to the computer has their respective roles.
Civil engineering was developed in line with the level of human needs and movements, so
that it can be said that this science can turn a forest into a big city.

Branches of civil:

Engineering Structural: Branch that studies the structural problems of the material used for
development. A building shape may be made from several choices of materials such as
steel, concrete, wood, glass or other materials. Each of these ingredients has their own
characteristics. Structural science studies the properties of the material so that in the end it
can be chosen which material is suitable for the type of building. In this field, it is studied in
more depth in matters relating to the planning of building structures, roads, bridges, tunnels
from foundation construction to buildings ready for use.

Geotechnical: Branch that studies the structure and nature of various kinds of soil and rocks
in supporting a building that will stand on it. The scope can be in the form of field
investigations which are investigations of the soil conditions of an area, laboratory
investigations and soil and rock construction planning, such as embankments, excavations,
soft soil tunnels, rock tunnels (rock / mountain tunnel), earth / rock dam (earth dam, rock fill
dam)

Construction Management: The branch that studies problems in construction projects

related to economics, job scheduling, capital returns, project costs, all matters relating to law
and building permits to organizing work in the field so that the building is expected t

Hydrology: Branch that studies water, distribution, control and problems. This includes the
fields of water hydrology (with regard to weather, rainfall, water discharge of a river, flood
discharge, etc.), hydraulics (water material properties, water pressure, water thrust etc.) and
water structures such as ports, irrigation, reservoirs / dams, canals.

Environmental Engineering: Branch that studies environmental problems and issues.

Covering this field includes the provision of clean water facilities and infrastructure, waste
and dirty water management, river pollution, noise and air pollution to sanitation techniques.

Transportation: Branch that studies the transportation system in its planning and
implementation. This area includes the construction and regulation of highways, airport
construction, terminals, stations and their management.

Civil Engineering Informatics: A new branch that studies the application of Computers for
the calculation / modeling of a system in a Development or Research project. Including this
area, for example, is modeling Building Structures (Structural Material or CAD), modeling
groundwater or waste movements, environmental modeling with GIS (Geographic
Information System) technology.
The breadth of branches of civil engineering is very flexible in the world of work.
Professionals obtained from an expert in this field include: design / implementation of
construction / construction of road infrastructure, bridges, construction, buildings, airports,
traffic (land, sea, air), canal network systems, drainage, irrigation, housing, buildings ,
minimizing earthquake losses, environmental protection, clean water supply, land surveying,
project financial concepts, project management etc. All aspects of life are included in the
content of civil engineering. Differences from architects, engineers in the project. Architects
contribute designs, ideas, implementation of development on paper. The results of the
design are then forwarded to the technical staff for the implementation of development. At
this stage, civil engineers make improvements / suggestions from the implementation of
planning, coordination in the project, adjusting the course of the project to match planning.
In addition, civil engineers also make financial concepts and project management things that
affect the project. Civil engineering experts not only discuss development projects, but in
other fields related to informatics, allowing to model a form with the help of a CAD program
(Autocad application), modeling the use of earthquake relief, flooding. This is very important
in developed countries as a measure of the feasibility of building an important building that
is most likely to save people such as nuclear reactors or dams, if there is a failure of
technical planning. The design of the building is specifically designed for computers given
the factors needed for the building such as earthquake material and structural collapse. The
role of civil engineers is still valid even though the construction phase has been completed,
as given to the maintenance of the building's facilities.
