Worksheet Objectives
This worksheet will familiarize you with the operation and characteristics of the Toyota Smart Key
system on the vehicle.

Section 1: Smart Unlock and Lock

1. Make sure the vehicle is locked.

2. Approach the vehicle with the Smart Key in your possession and try to open the driver’s door,
making sure that you touch the backside of the door handle. How many doors unlock? Are
there any audible or visual signs that the vehicle has unlocked?

3. Lock the vehicle again using the switch on the outside driver’s door handle, making sure that
you have the Smart Key in your possession.

4. Approach the vehicle with the Smart Key in your possession and try to open the front passenger
door, making sure that you touch the backside of the door handle. How many doors unlock?

5. Lock the vehicle using the key fob.

6. Approach the vehicle with the Smart Key in your possession and try to open the rear hatch.
How many doors unlock?

7. Try to lock the key in the vehicle (place key on driver’s seat, close all doors and use exterior lock
switch on the door handle). What happens?

Section 2: Smart Start

1. With the Smart Key in the vehicle, but not in the key slot, press the “Power” button with your
foot NOT on the brake pedal. What happens?

2. Press the “Power” button again. What happens?

3. Press the “Power” button again. What happens?

4. Now depress the brake pedal and press the “Power” button. What happens?

5. Press the “Power” button to turn the vehicle off.

6. With the Smart Key in the vehicle, put the vehicle into the READY mode and shift to the Drive
position. Have a team member remove the key from the vehicle and walk away until the alarm
sounds. What warning is displayed on the dash? What happens if you press the “Park” button?

7. Locate the Smart Key Cancel Switch. Where is it located? Press the switch. Verify that the
Smart Start and lock/unlock functions are no longer functional. Use the key as you would on a
non-Smart Key equipped Prius to verify that these functions operate normally.

Note: Return all cars to the original state and return to the classroom to complete the
other portion of this worksheet.
