SPETOSPIR® SPETOSPIR® SWZ gasket has two metal rings: outer (centring) and inner
SWZ – reinforcing; due to „enclosing” the proper sealing element between
the to rigid metal rings, the gasket has excellent compression resistance;
the style recommended for flat face and raised face flanges over PN 40
(class 300), for gaskets with PTFE filler also of lower PN; for gaskets of
large dimensions (above 800mm) suggested as standard. The standard
inner ring is made from the same material as gasket’s metal strip in the
sealing area.
SPETOSPIR® SPETOSPIR® SWZ gasket might be produced as Low Stress (LS) style
SWZ LS gasket. Style LS, provides all the superior sealing properties of a spiral
Low Stress wound gasket for the applications where only the low-stress forming
pressure is available.
SPETOSPIR® SPETOSPIR® SnWZ gasket with inner ring made from te metal stip thinner
SnWZ than that applied in the sealing ares; it may result from the necessity of
providing the gasket with very narrow ring e.g. when the active width of
the gasket is optimized, or due to accessibility of non-standard alloys for
the rings.

SPETOMET® MPL®
Designation Sketch Description
SPETOMET® The SPETOMET® MPL® 10 gaskets are made of a metal core and thin
MPL® 10 layers on; it is used as a basic type of gaskets for narrow flange surfaces
or as a bar of multiedge or spiral wound gaskets. MPL® 10 metal only
style is also available.
SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MPL® 11 gasket from corrugated metal face, used for
MPL® 11 less severe temperatures where flanges are ligtly loaded; corrugation
increases conformability of the gasket; gasket can be galvanized; in rare
cases it is applied in this construction, most frequently it is a metal core of
SPETOMET® MPL® 12 style.
SPETOMET® Profile SPETOMET® MPL® 12AM is the gasket forecasted for hot-gas and
MPL® 12AM / or hot-blast gasket used for iron and steel industry.
MPL® 12AM is constructed from the main inner steel ring which is covered
by two MPL12 corrugated gaskets with graphite layers and then wrapped
with graphite impregnated fibreglass material.

SPETOMET® MPL®
Designation Sketch Description
SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MPL® 20 flat gasket in single metal jacket with an opening
MPL® 20 is used for narrow flanges; manufactured from metal sheet, which
encapsulates soft filler; such profile protects the soft edge of the gasket’s
material; most of gaskets of this style are made from copper and its width is
less than 6 mm; for larger cross sections MPL® 23 style is recommended.
SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MPL® 21 gasket is similar to MPL® 20 but the metal jacket
MPL® 21 is overlapped and closes the soft filler; maximum width of the gasket is
also 6 mm.
SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MPL® 23 are double jacketed gaskets made from two pieces
MPL® 23 of metal and soft filler. This gasket is the most commonly used profile for heat
exchangers and other vessels: the two piece metal construction gives extra
rigidity which allows for large diameters; may be manufactured in various
shapes and dimensions; also the profile with centring ring MPL® 23 Z.
SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MPL® 23 I gasket has additional metal part inside the
MPL® 23 I filler stabilizing the profile (prevents excessive, transverse deformation
of the gasket); the metal inside inreases gasket’s strength, by improving
its resistance to stress; thickness above 3,2 mm is recommended for this
profile in order to apply the metal part; this is a proper solution also for the
gaskets with the desired end thickness.

SOLID METAL GASKETS
SOLID METAL GASKETS
Ring joint gaskets (RTJ) are metallic solid sealing solution for high pressure /
temperature applications and are fitted in special ring groove type flanges.
They are blowing-out resistant and very reliable solution.
RTJ gaskets are widely used in pressure vessels like valves, pipelines in
the Petrochemical and Oil&Gas industry.
Material selection can be determined dependent on fluid temperature
and flange hardness. They comply with EN 12560-5, ASME B16.20
standard and API spec 6A. The gaskets are turned to the required
dimensions/tolerances and surface finish using CNC high quality
techlology. Carbon steel and soft iron RTJ gaskets can be zinc plated in
accordance with API specifications.
Any other non-standard styles and workmanship are possible. All type
of EN 10204 certificates on request.

SPETORING® SPETORING® RTJ (octagonal) gaskets have been widely used mainly
RTJ in oil and gas industry; they are manufactured from steel (special alloys
OCTAGONAL on request) and installed in special flange arrangement; at present only
trapezoidal arrangement is applied for octagonal RTJ-R gaskets; RTJ-R
gaskets have total blowout resistance, its design provides two sealing
barriers, therefore they do not fail in very dangerous installatios; in
special styles available also as a plug, wiht centring ring, galvanized;
manufactured almost exclusivily in dimension standards according to
NPS 36, non standard up to 3000 mm.
SPETORING® SPETORING® RTJ-BX gaskets are engineered for the highest pressure
RTJ-BX ratings up to 20.000 psi; it is a solution requiring special facing
arrangement; blowout resistant, opening in the axial direction has the
function of balancing the pressure loads in the situation when the inner
sealing barrier is not tight; the gasket manufactured only in dimension
standards to NPS 30.
SPETORING® Beside the standard RTJ seals we provide RTJ oval or octagonal, RX and
RTJ-BLIND BX profiles as blind rings. Shape of the rings is similar to seals which
they replace, but commonly they are equipped with a plate which facilitate
installation for maintenance service and also enable to include any
necessary information of basic data of the connection.

SPETORING® LENS
Designation Sketch Description
SPETORING® Most popular Lens Gasket being nowadays installed are manufactured
LENS 2696 to well known standard DIN 2696 which describes Lens Gaskets from
DN 10 PN 63 up to DN 300 PN 400.
Beside DIN 2696 standard there are many like ‘Company Specifications’
(or ‘National Standards’ or ‘Branch Standards’) which describe in details
particular shapes and details of lens forecasted especially to any Company
(or Country or Branch). All these particular construction are covered by
Spetech production program.
SPETORING® Another two ideas meet widely in lens gaskets area are: galvanization of
LENS lens seals (which mainly aims are to improve tightness of the connection
SPECIAL and/ or decrease roughness (smoothness) of the flange contacting areas
STANDARD and providing blind or spectacle-type blind lens seals (used for special
purposes like emergency, maintenance or any other).
Lens Gaskets described above which are manufactured to many
different standards are in practice forecasted to various standard pipeline
connections. Spetech is manufacturing also customized lens gaskets with
maximum size of 3000mm. Such special constructions are producing acc.
to special customers specifications, drawings, and other data.
SPETORING® Beside the standard Lens gaskets we provide Lens blind rings. Shape
LENS BLIND of the rings is similar to seals which they replace, but commonly they are
equipped with a plate which facilitate installation for maintenance service
and also enable to include any necessary information of basic data of the
connection.
SPETORING®
LENS BLIND
SPECTACLE
Spectacle Blind Lens gaskets are used in purpose to separate pipesystems
or to connect with each other. Set of two Lenses of certain size (where one
of the gasket is blind and the other is a ring) is connected by flat section
of steel. Such Spectacle-Blind pair is applied in pipelines which regularly
need to be separated from other installations.
When pipeline is in “working conditions” Spectacle Blind Lens is
mounted in the „open” position so that flow through the pipe is possible.
“Maintenance condition” on a pipeline section is the reason to change
the spectacle to the „close” position. In such case, after removal of bolts,
the Spectacle Blind is rotated and after re-installing the bolts, pipe is
blocked and no flow is possible.

SPETORING® SPETORING® R-M 1 is a basic solution for application where the space
R-M 1 between flanges is limited. Widely met as per DIN 2695 standard 4mm
thick rings. Easiest solution either concerning material consumption and
manufacturing cost.
Inside weld seams are the only available option (errors on inside joint
welding are difficult to repair). Any customised dimensions also available.
Rewelding: can be re-welded up to 5 times, material loss ~3mm each.
Radial compensation up to 0.3mm.
SPETORING® This solution is technically based on idea similar to what is in R-M 1 case
R-M 2 but both outside weld seams/ inside weld seams option is available which
facilitate installation.
Customised construction of SPETORING® R-M 2 are available – starting
from this profile all profiles with outside weld seam can be deliver with
partitions. Rewelding up to 5 times (3mm each loss).
Please not the radial compensation is only like 0.1mm.

R-M 3 and pressure shock resistance compare to R-M 1 and R-M 2. But the
‘membrane’ effect is yet not that visible as the hollow lip small dimensions.
Customize cross-sections and partitions available.
Outside weld seams available but as all this construction is strongly
determined by existing limitations (not enough space between flanges for
R-M 5 and existing redial movements of the joint deserving the hollow-lip
solution) the access to outside seam is difficult, which effect request of
high performance in welding process.
The SPETORING® R-M 3 is Weld Ring Seal is possible to be installed for
application with bars (partitions).
However re-welding is possible approx. 2-3 times. Radial compensation
up to 0.5mm.
SPETORING® Full size hollow lip weld-ring gasket (inside weld seam only available
R-M 4 to flanges). Advanced construction recommended especially for large
diameter joints. SPETORING® R-M 4 is capable to compensate great
axial and radial differential expansions; extremely resistant to thermal and
pressure shocks.
The inside weld seam sometimes is a great advantage as prevent from
crevice corrosion in compare to outside seam solution. If crevice corrosion
is an important issue – than auxiliary inside seal should also be used.
Tipical thickness is 2x15mm (30mm for full seal). Customised cross-
section and diameters are available (which allows to install this adopted/
customized weld ring seal using existing flanges with shapes ready for
other types of seals: spigot recess, delta shape, double cone, etc...).
Rewelding up to 4 times (easy to dismantle with 2mm cut-off disc). Radial
compensation up to 5.0mm.
SPETORING® Full size hollow lip weld-ring gasket (outside weld seam possible). Most
R-M 5 advanced construction recommended especially for large flanges and
joints equipped in any partitions requested !
Capable to compensate great an axial and radial differential expansions;
extremely resistant to thermal and pressure shocks.
In SPETORING® R-M 5 customised cross-section and diameters are
available (which allows to install this adopted/ customized weld ring seal
using existing flanges with shapes ready for other types of seals: spigot

Radial compensation up to 5.0mm.
SPETORING® Full size hollow lip weld-ring gasket (inside weld seam only available to
R-M 6 flanges). Special construction recommended especially for joints which
cannot be spreaded to allow installation of typical R-M 4 seal. Similar
to above R-M 4 and R-M 5 models SPETORING® R-M 6 is capable to
compensate axial and radial differential expansions, also being extremely
resistant to thermal and pressure shocks.
Typical thickness is 2x15mm (30mm for full seal). However because of
special contruction of SPETORING® R-M 6 flanges need only to be
speeded about 10mm away (instead of 30mm at standard R-M 4 solution).
All the other parameter as in R-M 4 case.

SPETORING® Many other customized solutions of Weld Rings are available on request.
R-M 4 / Spetech can provide Weld Rings dedicated to existing geometry of flanges
R-M 4 SPECIAL (tongue – groove, male – female, flat-groove, others). This mean no need
of hard modifications of existing flanges is required.
Another special solution is installation of Weld Rings set instead pair of
2 flat gaskets divided by Tube Sheet. Flat gaskets in such type of applications
are especially trouble making, because 1 set of long bolts is responsible to
secure tightness (and generate necessary surface stress) of 2 flat gaskets.
Many other customized solutions of Weld Rings which fit to specific
customers need are available on request.
METAL DIAPHRAGMS
SPETORING® R-D
Designation Sketch Description
SPETORING® A metal diaphragm for welding is a type of seal used for flat covers
R-D 12 in exchangers operating at high pressures, in high temperatures, or,
simultaneously, with a high level of both of these parameters. They are
also used for the hazardous media, e.g. in hydrogen installations.
They are made of a thin plate of stainless steel or of special alloys. The
R-D 13 plate is usually welded circumferentially with an inguinal seam or butt
welded onto the chamber flange or onto the chamber plater. It is also used
as an anticorrosive shield. One of the advantages of using the welded
diaphragm is reduction of the requirements related to screws because
the seal (the welded diaphragm) forms tension at the zero level.
R-D 14
Regardless of the circumferential weld, the diaphragm is pressed by the
lid onto its outer side, like in the flange-screw connection; which results in
different peripheral part geometries.
On occasions, in order to reduce the welding stress as well as to reduce
R-D 16 the pressure resulting from pressure- and temperature load in motion
conditions, in the chamber flange there are special malleable rings, which
improve the elasticity of the connection between the diaphragm and the
chamber flange.
R-D 18 Spheric diaphragms are used for shell and tube heat exchangers’
chamber locks. Thanks to their special profile, they have certain elasticity,
which reduces the stress generated by either welding or by exposure
to pressure and temperature. Their sphericity is closely matched to the
R-D 21 motion conditions and ensures consistent moves of its peripheral part as
well as that of the internal part of the shell.

METAL DIAPHRAGMS
SPETORING® R-D
Designation Sketch Description
SPETORING® A separate group of diaphragms are those used for heat exchanger
R-D 30 chamber locks, HH and HL, where in the tubular space, there is high
pressure and in place of the flanged connection, the breech-lock is being
used the main advantage of using this lock is much smaller size and weight,
comparing to the conventional screw-mounted lid. The main element of
R-D 32 the breech-lock is the diaphragm fitted with a peripheral seal through
the pressure-blocking rings system. In some cases, the diaphragm can
be equipped with a central gap, if a revisory gap is provided in the lid.
The advantage of this approach is avoidance of the need to cut the weld
during inspections.

SPETORING® R-Double Cone Seal SPETORING® R Double Cone Seals are provided commonly to
highest duty pressure vessels equipment (mostly in chemical processing
industry). Typical working pressure 50-350 bars and typical temperature
up to 400°C, diameter between 500 to 3000mm. They are self-energized
gasket which construction details need to be designed essentially by the
device designers. Although they look similar to octagonal RTJ the rule of
sealing effect ot the joint is different than RTJ.
How it works? After being acted by internal pressure, double cone
R seal expands outward and the contact pressure between gasket and
flange increases substancially. Normally at the conical surfaces of
R
the SPETORING® R Double Cone Seal layers of soft material are
installed – mostly silver, aluminium, cooper or graphite with thicknes of
0,5÷1,5mm. To increase friction conical surfaces of gasket (which contact
Layers for Double Cone Seal with flange surfaces) are often additionally machined: either with 2-5
groovs (0,5÷1mm deep) or given convex shape.
Please note that during fitting the radial gap of 0,05mm for every 100mm of
diameter of non-assembled seal should be precisely controlled and at the
cylindrical, supporting surface of cover should be machined longitudinal
grooves; Hence internal pressure act on the cylindrical internal surface of
the gasket.
COVER GASKETS
SPETORING® R-Delta Seal SPETORING® R-Delta seal is used for pressure vessel covers. It requires
a special flange construction with triangular grooves. How it works? The
total depth of grooves is a little bit lower than the hight of gasket in the
non-installed state. When tighten up the bolts, the cover gently approaches
to the shell flange. After starting the pressure the delta seal bends cross
section and contacts linearly in bottoms of grove under high contact
pressure. As being acted by internal pressure the delta seal bends even
more outwards, and the conical surface of seal tightly contacts the conical
surfaces on seal grooves. Please note the high machining accuracy and
high precision of any surfaces of SPETORING® R-Delta style joints are
required!
Also the edges of the delta seal can imprint bottoms of grooves, so – after
diassambling – machining of grooves and – probably – new gasket with
new (increased) hight will be required.
Application range of delta seal is up to 2000mm of diameter temperature
mostly lower than 400°C and pressure lower than 400 bars.

chemical attack and fire-safe. Additionally convex gasket geometry in
the same moment ensures very long service life time and protects flange
face from being damaged. The rule is that the SPETORING® R-B convex
gaskets should be produced from material softer than flange faces and
in the in special cases you can use galvanic coating or layers (silver,
aluminium) to achieve this. Convex seals are manufactured in accordance
with many dimension standards beside popular international (ASME, EN,
JIS, GOST, etc most popular are DIN 7603 form D for union fittings and
DIN 837 for pressure gauges and associated valves).

Self energized energized v-ring with centering ring which works also as supporting (anti

GORETM GORE™ Series 500 gasket tape helps to achieve greater sealing
SERIES 500 efficiencies with large steel piping and equipment. Unlike sheet gasketing,
it can be quickly formed in place, installs easily, and reduces expensive
material scrap. GORE™ Series 500 gasket tape is the ideal choice
for sealing large diameter flanges. Made from 100% multi-directionally
expanded PTFE, it combines superior sealing performance and efficiency.
Tighter and more creep resistant than other gasketing alternatives, it
also has the advantages of a form-in-place sealing solution. Without
“donut hole” scrap from cutting, it is often more cost effective. Because
it is customized at installation, long lead times are eliminated and gasket
inventories are reduced. Conformable and highly compressible, this tape
forms a very tight seal. Strong multidirectionally expanded PTFE gives
excellent creep resistance for a long-lasting seal that withstands virtually
any chemical process.
GORETM GORE™ Series 1000 gasket tape is a form-in-place gasket for glasslined
SERIES 1000 equipment that guards against premature gasket failure. Unlike PTFE
envelope gaskets, it will not degrade due to chemical attack, and will
ensure a tight and long-lasting seal. GORE™ Series 1000 gasket tape
is the ideal choice for sealing large diameter flanges. Made from 100%
multi-directionally expanded PTFE, the entire gasket is chemically inert.
As a result, the user will not experience the sealing problems associated
with aggressive media or outside environments. This unique gasket tape
conforms to the imperfections common in glass-lined flange surfaces,
while maintaining dimensional stability for superior sealing reliability. This
gasket tape can be installed easily and quickly, yielding initial savings. And
since it minimizes unexpected process upsets, process productivity gains
are also achieved.
GORETM GORE™ Series 800 are gaskets combining the qualities of expanded
SERIES 800 PTFE resistant to medium transfer (diffusion); they are used for flanges
Universal of fixtures made of delicate materials where little assembly stresses are
Pipe Gasket achieved. They assure durable tightness, even in changeable working
conditions of the flange.
SPETOFLON® SPETOFLON® TEX DF is a joint sealant in the form of tape from mono-
TEX DF directionally orientated expanded PTFE, the most common of all “formed
in place” sealing solutions; the sealant has excellent forming characteristics
even to the worn and damaged surfaces, cutting the ends of the tape
using skiving technique is not necessary during the installation; the risk of
relaxation and cold flow is limited due to small thickness of the sealant in
the flange, tape with adhesive strip, available in 9 sizes; sealant considered
necessary for the maintenance services; as an alternative GORE TM DE
joint sealant also available.

properties as per chemical resistance, resilience, physiological safety,
resistance to ageing etc.; it is, however, equipped with 0.5mm thick, mesh
1.4404 stainless steel reinforcement, this reinforcement increases tensile
strength, resistance to stress and resilience, also makes the gasket more
rigid which is important during the installation;thanks to the reinforcement,
the material can withstand higher pressure and/or temperature loads which
is important in hot water or steam service; also reinforcement does not
have negative influence on permeabilty, due to the special technological
process; BAS® 340 I is used in chemical industry, refineries, power plants,
coke plants, in all places where substantial pressure and temperature loads
occur and where the flange faces are narrow, BAS® 340 I has a non-stick
top and bottom layer of high coefficient of friction; in special version –
when used in components which rotate on te gasket during assembly, a
graphite coating on one or both sides of the gasket is required.
SPETOBAR® SPETOBAR® BAS® 340 R is a sheet made of the same fibre and

OFFSET SEALS
FOR BUTTERFLY VALVES
SPETORING® RQ-E, RT-E
Code Sketch Description
SPETORING® In terms of the kinematics of the butterfly valve disc movement double
RD-E, triple RT-E and quadruple RQ-E eccentric seals may be
RQ-E distinguished. This structural characteristic has a signifcant impact on the
geometry of the sealing surface. The purpose of the multi-eccentric valve
structures is to minimize the friction in the area of sealing while closing and
opening the butterfly valve.
This is especially important issue for seals containing metal inside, due to
the low flexibility of these seals (in compare to rubber based materials) and
the real risk of wear due to grinding.
The difference between triple- or quadruple- eccentric seals aremay
assume different contours, especially round or elliptical.
All our offset seals are always made according to a precise documentation
of the manufacturer of the butterfly valve.
The range of dimensions of the internal metal laminate seals for butterfly
valves is as follows is up to DN3000 (NPS 120”).

SPECIAL SEALING SYSTEMS
SSA 10 The SSA 10 seat is a basic form of seats applied mostly to ball-type small-
dimension fittings designed for cold-media and/or moderate-pressure
applications.
They are made mostly of pure PTFE (pure PTFE provides the smallest
possible friction factor and good chemical resistance), or of PTFE filled
with carbon or graphite. Metal/graphite and/or impregnated synthetic
graphite compositions are not so popular.
Though SSA 10 it is a very cheap structure, applications to high pressure
and/or temperature systems are somehow restricted regarding resistance
and/or creep properties. In case PTFE is considered, secondary sealing (in
the body) is not required, because the seat can satisfy this need.
SSA 30 The SSA 30 seats of fittings, trilaterally enclosed in steel housings, have
the highest strength properties and/or erosion resistance. It can freely
move inside the body, according to the structure concept.
Such a structure requires to install secondary packing between the body
and seat. The structure can be used as a fire-resisting product with a seat
of PTFE. In case of fire, upon PTFE is burnt off, the steel housing operates
as a sealing.
Either PTFE composite materials or carbon/graphite materials can be
used, as well as other suitable materials on a customer requirement, as for
instance polymer materials.
SSA 40 The SSA 40 seat is a popular type for ball-type fittings, because secondary
sealing can be avoided, and they can be used in great axial-movement
applications.
The structure is designed for seats with sealing components made of PTFE
or PTFE compositions.
The metal component protects against erosion of the disk spring. The
outside ‘soft’ cylindrical surface of the seat provides leak-proofness, even
when moving. The steel ring can be used also as an emergency fire-
resistant sealing. For such an application, it should be machined.
SSA 50 Intending to prevent failure of ball cocks having seats made of brittle
materials, e.g. made of synthetic carbon or graphite, shrinkable steel
mountings are used. Between the mounting and the seat, there can be
inserted glue (caulking), and inside the mounting structure a room for
secondary sealing can be constructed.
SSA 60 Seats of a SSA 50 profile are applied mostly to ball-type taps with balls
supported on trunnions (trunnion ball valves). The seat has to be held
down to the ball by pressure thrust, because the ball itself is fixed.
There are a number of various seat structures having capacity to move under
pressure, and their geometry is designed to reduce thrust of the seat against
the ball when the valve is opened, hence life of the valve is extended.
Regarding the SSA 50 structure, the basic part of the sealing is the steel
component, whilst the sealing piece itself is a pad of a relatively small
section.

SPETOMET® MWK® 28 / Double Sealing Systems become more popular relating to the increasing
SPETOGRAF® 10 safety and reliability of plants, recently improved anti-emission ‘Clean Air Acts’,
enlarged intervals between maintenance periods.
The double sealing systems are used in bolted flange connections of appa-
ratus, valves and pipelines. Historically some first applications took place in
Nuclear Power Plants where highest tightness / reliability factors are used
since beginning. Nowadays Double Sealing Systems are one of Best
Available Technology (BAT) solution that are provided more widely by Spetech
to the market.
SPETOMET® MWK® 50 / Typical place of of application are:
SPETOSPIR® SWZ • still the nuclear plant connection requiring highest reliability and leakage
proofness technology,
• pressure vessels and Installations (pipelines) especially in the chemical in-
dustry for application with hazardous substances (toxic, odorous, explosive,
or any other) also big-size reservoirs for hazardous liquids / gases / liquid
gases.
The construction of Spetech Double Sealing Systems is that a more
rigid gasket (having less compressibility) with a high spring rate e.g.
GUS® 660/ Dryflex or GUS 660 gasket is used for the gasket in the main-load. In
SPETOSPIR® S the same construction as the secondary gasket (which is put in the off-
load position) should be used gasket with higher compressibility factor (for
example spiral wound type or pure graphite layers).
How does it work? Function of primary seal is to ensure tightness and
reliability of the connection (it works as classic gasket). Hence secondary
seal is not exposed to high pressure any more and than secondary seal
may be used just to stop any eventual leaks (passing through primary seal
or any welds in monitored area). Being such barrier secondary seal lets to
dispose leaks to leakage measuring devices in aim to provide continuous
control of tightness of the connection. If the rate of leakage rise – this is
the information that something wrong is starting with the gasket / welds
inside monitored area
The selection of Double Sealing System to be used for the gaskets in the
main-load and the off-load may be calculated by Spetech individually to
customers request. The aim of this customized calculation is to proof the
excellent tightness of the joint from one hand and and from the other hand
such calculation let to estimate flange rotation that occurs in the moment
of installing the Double Sealing System and to prevent from bad results
of such rotation.

SEALS FOR
PLATE HEAT EXCHANGERS
Sketch Description
In some industries instead of Shell & Tube plate type heat exchangers
GLUE STYLE are widely popularized. There major advantage to use plate type heat
exchangers, is that the corrugations in the plates reduces the liquid
turbulence to very limited level and the liquids flow is counter current so
that the heat transfer efficiency is always 3-5 times higher than Shell & Tube
type heat exchangers.
Plate heat exchangers in its structure is composed of a fixed frame,
a movable frame and corrugated plates which are in between the two
frames. Hot liquid and cold liquid go through between the corrugated plates
in turn the areas separated by elastomer paths of seals. Most popular plate
heat exchangers producers are APV, AGC, Alfa Laval, Arsopi, Barriquand,
Cetetherm, Ciat, Cipriani, Fischer, Fiorini, GEA, Hisaka, Mueller, Pasilac,
Reheat, API Schmidt Bretten, Silkeborg, Sondex, Swep, Tranter, Vicarb.
To prevent leaking, a fine elastomer for the gasket is installed around
CLIP STYLE
the plates and big tightening bolts are used to put the plates together.
Construction of the Plate heat exchangers makes the seals a critical part
of this equipment responsible for life-time of all the equipment. Depending
from process medium the gasket must be chemical resistance and/or
temperature resistance. Spetech is providing seals to most existing plate
heat exchangers working in: power industry, oil processing, food and
beverage industry, sugar industry, chemistry, pulp and paper.
Most popular materials used are: NBR, HNBR, EPDM, FPM (different
grades).
There are two basic ideas of installing of the seals: Glue Style Gasket
and Clip Style Seals. Clip style gaskets are installed without any adhesive.
This improvement lets fitting of the gasket on the plate just by installing clips
into grooves on the plate. Hence gasket is high resistance against pressure
and enable for a quick and simple replacement.

GENERAL INFORMATION
FLANGE GASKETS
INSTALLATION
Tools Specific tools are required for cleaning and tensioning the fasteners. Additionally, always
use standard safety equipment and follow good safety practices. Acquire the following
Required equipment prior to installation:
– Calibrated torque wrench, hydraulic or other tensioner
– Wire brush (brass if possible)
– Helmet
– Safety goggles
– Lubricant
– Other plants – specified equipment
Clean and • Remove all foreign material and debris from the seating surfaces, fasteners (bolts or studs),
nuts, and washers. Use plant-specified dust control procedures.
examine • Examine fasteners (bolts or studs), nuts, and washers for defects such as burrs or cracks.
• Examine flange surfaces for warping, radial scores, heavy tool marks, or anything prohibiting
proper gasket seating.
• Replace components if found to be defective. If in doubt, seek advice.
Align • Align flange faces and bolt holes without using excessive force.
• Report any misalignment.
flanges
Install •
•
Assure gasket is the specified size and material.
Examine the gasket to ensure it is free of defects.
packing • Carefully insert gasket between flanges.
• Make sure the gasket is centered between the flanges.
• Do not use jointing compounds or release agents on the gasket or seating surfaces unless
specified by the gasket manufacturer.
• Bring flanges together, ensuring the gasket isn’t pinched or damaged.

surfaces
Install and tighten bolts • Always use proper tools: calibrated torque wrench or other controlled tensioning device.
• Consult your gasket manufacturer and/or engineering department for guidance on torque
specifications.
• Always torque nuts in a cross bolt tightening pattern.
• Tighten the nuts in multiple steps:
Step 1 – Tighten all nuts initially by hand. (Larger bolts may require a small hand wrench.)
Step 2 – Torque each nut to approximately 30% of full torque.
Step 3 – Torque the nuts to approximately 60% of full torque.
Step 4 – Torque each nut to full torque, again using the cross bolt tightening pattern.
(Large-diameter flanges may require additional tightening passes.)
Step 5 – Apply at least one final full torque to all nuts in a clockwise direction until all torque
is uniform. (Large-diameter flanges may require additional tightening passes.)
Retightening Caution: Consult your gasket manufacturer and/or engineering department for guidance and
recommendations on retightening.
Do not retorque elastomer-based, asbestos-free gaskets after they have been exposed to
elevated temperatures unless otherwise specified.
Retorque fasteners exposed to aggressive thermal cycling.
All retorquing should be performed at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure.

GRAPHITE RINGS
Code Sketch Description
Grafmet® This is a basic form the rings to seal up stems of fittings are made by
moulding a graphite foil up to required density (see the table), usually
950 within 1.3÷1.7 g/cm3 (standard density: 1.4g/cm3). The cross-section
of the GRAFMET® 950 ring is usually a square, however a rectangular
cross-section is also available. GRAFMET® 950 has a high ratio K
of transformation of axial stress forces into radial stress forces
(0.8÷0.9, depending on its density). They are made of various types of
graphite foil – see the table. As a standard, if no other designation is
provided, rings are made of SIGRAFLEX® C foil. When other types of foil
are used, it is designated adequately, for instance: GRAFMET® 950 TF, etc.
GRAFMET® 950 can be used individually (new fittings with stems of
rather small diameters, systems of rather low pressure) or in sets (see:
valve stuffing-box sets) as main rings responsible for sealing. It is also
a component of special packing sets.

GRAPHITE RINGS
Code Sketch Description
Grafmet® The ring of such a form is designed to protect against squeezing (flowing)
of the sealing material (graphite) into gaps existing on place of its
952 HTX application. Another function is to minimize access of oxygen to graphite.
(upper ring) The ring can be used individually in static applications as sealing of
a cylindrical surfaces, and/or as an upper/lower ring in a packet sealing
a stuffing-box. In such a case, forged material of low tacking to the stem
material is recommended (see also: WGR 952/950), as for instance
nickel.
Applying to systems of high pressure, density of graphite is recommended
to be selected according to the working pressure (see the table), the
standard density of the product is 1.6g/cm3 and the product itself is made of
SIGRAFLEX® C foil. In case of power system applications, SIGRAFLEX® P
foil is recommended (designation is: GRAFMET® 952 HTX).
Grafmet® The rings GRAFMET® Profil#... with respective description are use
in, according to an individual design, machine, fittings, and/or pump
Profil#... construction.
Their use is related to simplification of their structures by implementation
of special sealing profiles. It allows, for instance, to reduce the number of
components, to decrease a joint outline by separation three rooms (areas)
with one seal, to reduce void pockets, to facilitate assembly operations.
Parameters that can be assorted by SPETECH® while manufacture of
GRAFMET® Profil#... profiled rings, are: geometry, density (density
distribution), stiffness/hardness, split or not split, etc. Adjustments are
made directly with the constructor of the equipment. Sealing of diameters
up to 2000mm are available, density from 1.1g/cm3 up to 1.7g/cm3.
The above solutions can contain metal pieces pressed in, and can be an
integral part of a constructure, and not only a sealing.

SPETOPAK® The certified sealing set of leak tightness: 3,2∙10 -3 mbar∙l/(s∙m) according
to VDI 2440 in compliance with requirements of the German Clean Air
WGR-TA1 Act TA-Luft. Tightness is certified for operation in a temperature of equal
and above 250°C. The set is made of expanded graphite, hence its
SPETOPAK® high resistance to relaxation. The SPETOPAK® WGR-TA1 sealing set is
WGR-TA2 distinguished by its lowest, of all known products, assembly pressure of
40N/mm2. The reinforced closing rings allow operation of the set in highest
pressure systems (up to 300bar). When operation in a very high temperature
SPETOPAK® is planned, consultation about the reinforcing material is recommended
WGR-TA3 and use of an unstandard reinforcing material can be required.
The set consists of 6 profiled rings, each of them has a different function,
therefore the condition for effective operation is to use a complete packet.
The effect of highest tightness is achieved due to special profiles of the
rings and suitably selected density of respected items of the packet.
Please note that SPETECH others sets of TA-Luft packing sets are soon to
be certified (e.g. SPETOPAK® WGR-TA2 and SPETOPAK WGR-TA3).
SPETOPAK® Please note that SPETECH others sets of TA-Luft packing sets are soon to
be certified (e.g. SPETOPAK® WGR-TA 8535 and SPETOPAK WGR-TA
WGR-TA 8530). For most updated list of ‘Clean Air Act’ complied packings, as well
8530 as packings sets acc. to API of Fire Safety Tests please contact SPETECH.

SPETOPAK® The SPETOPAK® WGR 952/950 HTX sealing set consists of two types
of rings: closing rings (on top and bottom) reinforced with steel members,
WGR and the appropriate sealing rings placed in a middle of the packet height.
952/950 The rings are made of the SIGRAFLEX® P foil providing the highest, as
HTX achieved today, resistance to oxidation.
Due to the treatment, i.e. implementation of a special construction form
and the special material, SIGRAFLEX® P, the packet can be applied to
systems of highest pressure (depending on the structure of the sealing
joint: 630bar) and temperature up to 700°C.
If the temperature is to be higher than 450°C, you are kindly requested to
contact us to select the best metal material.
SPETOPAK® The SPETOPAK® WGR 900 RR/950 sealing set is designed to be used in high-
pressure fittings, in systems of up to 300 bar pressure and 650°C temperature.
WGR The packet consists of closing rings made of SPETOPAK® 900 RR packing
900 RR/950 with special braided Inconel® reinforcement and graphite of increased
resistance to oxidation owing to special inhibitors. The Grafmet® 950 sealing
rings can also be made of graphite of increased oxidation resistance of the
foil: Sigraflex® E, Sigraflex® APX, or Sigraflex® P. In such a case there
are products designated: WGR 900 RR/950 E, WGR 900 RR/950 APX,
and/or WGR 900 RR/950 HTX respectively.
Advantage of the packet is its capacity to be installed on fittings without
removal of a drive (in such a case WGR 900 RR/900 P has to be used).
SPETOPAK® SPETOPAK® WGR 950 I/950 sealing is a packet designed to be used, first
of all, by fittings manufacturers. It is highly economical solution regarding
WGR its delivery cost, but must be installed on fittings without the drive. However,
950 I/950 this restriction can be avoided using GRAFMET® WGR/950 IP/950 P.
It is designed to be used on fittings in systems of up to 300bar and/or
550°C (then the WGR 950 I/950 HTX product is recommended). The
packet can be made of various types of graphite foil, that provides capacity
to be used in a very wide range of applications. Main applications are: cut-
off valves for power industry, petrochemistry, refineries, heat engineering.
Application to industrial purposes requires proper selection of packet
density that has an effect on leak tightness (the higher density the better
tightness) and/or on facility in assembly (the lower density the easier
assombly).

SPETOPAK® The SPETOPAK® WGR 880 R/950 set is used most widely as a repair
packet (also as a WGR 880 R/950 P product) in power industry,
WGR petrochemistry, refineries, and/or heat engineering. The graphitized
880 R/950 fibre, that the closing rings are made of (reinforced additionally with
Inconel® wire), is highly suitable when installed on fittings with wide gaps
in stuffing boxes and/or on stems that have lost their nominal roughness,
because the graphitized fibre has very good mechanical properties making
squeezing of the product into gaps practically impossible. Inconel® is
used to provide durable mechanical qualities of the reinforcement in very
high temperature, and to make sticking of the product to a stem surface
practically impossible. Maximal parameters of the product operation
depend, of course, on a structure and technical condition of fittings the
product is applied to. If there are new fittings, parameters of 300bar and/
or 550°C are quite possible.
SPETOPAK® The SPETOPAK® WGR 554 sealing packet is designed for fittings of
various applications and/or metering plunger pumps. The only restriction
WGR 554 is the maximal temperature 280°C.
The packet is made of braided packing of PTFE yarn, modified according
to the purpose. The product in its basic form (designation S) is impregnated
with fine-grained teflon without any lubricant, having the best chemical
and/or ageing resistance.
In case of more dynamic applications, where addition of lubricant is
allowed, impregnation contains paraffin oil (designation WGR 554). The
packet in this version has a high wear resistance. It can be also applied to
fittings in oxygen systems (designation WGR 554 OX) with pressure up
to 150bar.

Code Sketch Description
SPETOTERM® The SPETOTERM® TUI 820 distance rings are made of mica composite
material of admissible operating temperature up to 650°C.
TUI 820
The material is almost absolutely chemically resistant, having good sliding
properties (low friction factor, no sticking to steel), and high ageing
resistance.
SPETOTERM® TUI 820 rings are used as distance rings in long stuffing-
boxes, sometimes being also used as guides for stems. They can be used
as closing rings (under gland) in special sets, as well.
Due to high temperature resistance, the material is implemented to sealing
engineering. Rings are produced according to respective requirements,
to customized requirement only.

PACKING The tool designed to precise cutting of stuffing-box rings made of spliced
cord. The tool provides proper cutting of sealing ends, so while putting
CUTTER 45 them together the cord can be properly joined. Regarding sealing for
fittings, recommended angle of cutting is 45°.
EXTRACTOR The set of tools for fitters and/or maintenance service. The set contains
tools to remove worn packing, matched to various sizes of sealing, as well
BOX as flexible connectors with replaceable ends, extractors.
SPETECH® SPETECH manufactures and delivers systems of pull and control of wear
degree of packing, so called the Live-Loading (SPETECH® LL) system.
LL They are used to compensate and identify packing wear, for compensation
of relaxation of both stuffing-box sealing and screws, and owing to a
tension indicator built in the device they facilitate assembly operations.
SPETECH® implements LL systems also into the existing fittings that have
not been constructed with intention to use LL systems. Intending to solve
such a case, SPETECH® has worked up and implemented disk springs of a
special type, having holes for stuffing-box screws.
Generally, SPETECH® LL systems can be used as centralized systems (on
a mandrel) or as uncentral systems (on screws). Materials of springs allow
to use the systems in a temperature up to 650°C.

GENERAL INFORMATION
This rapid development of the pressure equipment technology, par-
ticularly that related to process seals, is aiming at safety and reliability
enhancement as well as at reducing the environmental impact. All
of those aspects require the provision of production repeatability on
one hand (hence our cooperation with an EN ISO 9001 certified
organisation); and on the other hand, they also require verification of
suitability for use, while taking into consideration increasingly higher
quality requirements and standards. As a result, we collaborate with
various organisations both, national and international, with an au-
thority to certify particular quality parameters. The Leak Tightness
Quality Certificate, also known as „TA-LUFT”, for compliance with
the VDI 2200/2440 requirements is a confirmation of compliance
with the highest sealing standards, particularly for seals designed for
refinery and chemical industries when used with hazardous materials.
UT – ULTRASONIC TESTING
This method enables us to exclude discontinuities in forging, metal sheets
and weld connections. It is also used for thickness measurement.
We perform these tests in compliance with the following standards:
EN ISO 16810:2014 • EN ISO 17640:2011 • EN 10307:2004
EN 10308:2004 • EN 10228-3:2000 • EN 10228-4:2000

ROUGHNESS MEASUREMENT
Roughness measurement is being done in line with EN ISO 16610-
21:2013-02 and EN ISO 4287:1999. It is being done using contact devices
and in the workshop by using the comparison method with gauge blocks.
The contact method determines parameters Ra, Rz, Rt, Rm, Rp, Sm, S, tp for
14 of the roughness class. Production of results is made by using Gauss’
filtration method, with simultaneous possibility of report preparation.
HARDNESS TESTING
The hardness testing of the gaskets made of metal materials, is done using
Brinell’s (HB) method (HB) according to EN ISO 6506, Vickers’ (HV) according
to EN ISO 6507 or Rockwell’s (HRB, HRC) according to EN ISO 6508.
If the hardness value conversion is necessary according to the above
methods, the value conversion is performed in line with EN ISO 18265.
Other methods or specific testing requirements to be discussed.
In case of soft materials, Shore’s method is normally used in line with EN
ISO 868.
IMPACT TEST
Impact test is recommended particularly for fragile metals and alloys. ISO
148-1 (EN 10045-1) or ASTM E23 standards are being used in this case.
Charpy pendulum impact (V-notch and U-notch) testing method is used
for determining the energy absorbed in an impact test of metallic gaskets
materials. Impact test is recommended particularly for fragile materials in
specific temperatures. Unless otherwise specified, test shall be carried out
at 23±5°C, where the test can be carried out in a wide temperature range
including sub-zero.
The test report shall include the following information:
• Standard reference
• Type of material and cast number
• Notch type
• Size of the tested piece, if other than full size
• Conditioning temperature
• The absorbed energy in J
• Any abnormalities that could affect testing process
In most cases the original inspection certificate 3.1 for raw materials
includes some results of the impact test. Any special requirements on
request.

Summary
SPETECH Sealing Materials Testing Laboratory conducts tests of flat seals in accordance with currently used standards of sealing material characteristic quantities
determination, and hence, becomes a part of the ”best available techniques” term. Application of modern testing methods and the Quality Management System
based on EN ISO/IEC 17025 guarantee designers and users that information with which they are provided shall allow them to select proper seal, also in terms of
applications compliant with Clear Air Act, TA-Luft and IPPC.
Now a day, the Laboratory is the only and wellknown testing laboratory of this type in Poland which possesses such a big number of test procedures connected with
seals. Applied methods allow to test almost all currently used flat gasket materials, and test results are used in design works on pressure equipment. They allow
for effective and, above all, safe selection of the flat gasket, especially in places, where safety reasons are on the first place. Continually developed and improved
measurement procedures and updated Quality Management System guarantee objective test results and high quality of rendered services.

EUROPARTNER®
CALCULATION SOFTWARE
EUROPARTNER®
CALCULATION SOFTWARE
ABOUT SOFTWARE
Engineering software EUROPARTNER® developed in SPETECH is used by designers
and service companies to select proper flange joint seal and calculate correct tension
and tightening torque. Moreover, it allows to calculate the whole flange joint as regards
strength. The program contains several calculation algorithms compliant with:
• EN 1591-1:2013
• EN 1591-1:2009
• EN 1591-1:2001
• WUDT-UC-WO-/19:10.2003
• ASME Code s. VIII
• AD 2000 Merkblatt B7/B8
• EN 13445-3 Annex G
Using the algorithm EN 1591-1HA1:2009 or ...2013 the designer, by selection of
appropriate tightness class, can influence reduction of emissions generated by the
selected seal. Thus, the joint is designed in the way compliant with requirements of such
environmental protection regulations as IPPC Directive, TA-Luft and Clean Air Act. Use
of the EUROPARTNER® program as an engineering and expert tool constitutes a
part of generally applied and recommended ”best available techniques” and “good
engineering practices”.
ADVANTAGES
1. Enormous database of geometrical values of gaskets, flanges, faces and bolts and
characteristic quantities of steel materials enables fast designing without looking these
values up in relevant standards.
2. Automatic, real time calculation of output quantities that enables continuous control
over the correctness of entered data.
3. Adapted rule of entered data hints maximization (expert function) however, the
program finally does not impose anything. Such functionality gives the designer the
possibility to perform necessary modifications of standard components.
4. Full direct control through the critical data panels system, allowing to check the whole
project correctness on a current basis.
5. Configurable prints taking into account all input, output and intermediate data. They
also contain all important drawings of joint components.
6. The same user interface regardless of calculation standard used.
7. Four language versions: Polish, English, German and Czech.
EUROPARTNER DATABASE
MEDIUM
Seal selection depending on medium and its operating parameters. The database con-
tains about 700 types of media. Possibility to preset medium concentration and limit
temperatures and pressure for the design. Tightness class plays the key role in gasket
selection. By proper selection the designer influences the level of emissions from the
designed joint.
GASKET TYPE
A particular gasket type is selected automatically by the program on the basis of specified
limiting conditions or manually by the designer. The program contains the database of
SPETECH seals and those mentioned in a given standard. It is possible to design and
calculate any gasket and the program producer can add seals of other companies.
EN, DIN, ASME standards icluded in database: EN 1514-1, EN 1514-2:July 2001,
