SPETOMET® MWK®

Designation Sketch Description

DryFlex®** Third generation of a kommprofile gasket! Three-factor flexibility

effect: super flexible sealing element; flexible sealing element assembly
in the centring ring and use flexibility – one gasket for one DN diameter,
DryFlex® LR regardless of the PN marking. The DryFlex® gasket was designed as
a  high quality industrial gasket, combining the advantages of soft-
material gaskets and metal gaskets, to be used in industrial pipelines and
DryFlex® IR in machines and heat exchangers.

DryFlex® NR

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MWK® 10 is a conventional kammprofile gasket with the

MWK® 10 grooves of the same depth; the gasket is applied first of all in tongue and
groove flanges, less frequently in male and female flanges; recommended
width of the MWK® 10 gasket should not exceed 15 mm due to uneven
SPETOMET® radial distribution of contact stresses; maximum outer diameter of the
MWK® 10 Z gasket – 5000 mm. The SPETOMET® MWK® 10 Z with a loose centering
ring, due to increased safety requirements, this type is recommended
instead of traditional MWK® 20 type.

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MWK® 15 is a gasket recommended for wide flange faces

MWK® 15** (for the width >20mm); the grooves of the gasket have different depth
which results in the even radial distribution of contact stresses and protect
it from being overloaded on the outer circumference of the gasket.

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MWK® 18 is a gasket used in the same applications as styles

MWK® 18 SPETOMET® MWK® 10 and MWK® 20. Different depths of the grooves
result in the built up of the contact stress in the middle of the gasket’s width
which increases its blowout resistance and sealability.

SPETOMET® MWK®

Designation Sketch Description

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MWK® 20 has the sealing element exactly the same as that
MWK® 20 of MWK® 10, with additional outer centring ring; integral centring ring of
thickness 2 or 3 mm, manufactured in traditional technology; at present
in order to meet the increased safety standards this style is replaced by
MWK® 21; MWK® 22 is the style for similar applications but with the
special centring ring.

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MWK® 21 gasket with the centring ring that has a pre-
MWK® 21 determined breaking groove – when the joint fails and the medium
escapes abruptly from the system the vibrations of the gasket occur – in
these circumstances the gasket “breaks” on the groove and centring rings
falls out.

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MWK® 25 has the same profile as MWK® 15 but with
MWK® 25** the centring ring; the ring has a pre-determined breaking groove which
increases its blowout resistance.

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MWK® 28 has the same profile as MWK® 18; its centring
MWK® 28 ring has a pre-determined breaking groove increasing gasket’s blowout
resistance.

SPETOMET® MWK®

Designation Sketch Description

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MWK® 50 gasket has an original profile engineered at

MWK® 50** SPETECH® , the features distinguishing it from other sealing solutions are
better recovery, so called metal core shape flexibility effect due to the
proportions between the groove depth and width, improved conformability
SPETOMET® although the gasket has smaller thickness; this last feature allows for the
MWK® 50 Z installation of MWK® 50 even in the shallow grooves where usually soft
gaskets are applied.

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MWK® 50 B for round boiler inspection holes, original

MWK® 50 B** design engineered at SPETECH®, the profile allows for relatively deeper
grooves and thus thicker sealing layers can be used, it results in good
tightness characteristics even in the worn flanges with substancial surface
imperfections, the gasket can be insterted into the boiler’s opening. Also
available customized profile MWK® 10 B with the metal core grooved in
traditional way.

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MWK® 55 is an original gasket developed at SPETECH®;

MWK® 55** it features increased recovery and better conformability, at the same time it
reduces the differences of contact stress in radial direction, which prevents
the edge of the gaskets from excessive loads; gaskets recommended for
wide flanges (for the width >20mm).

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MWK® 60 gasket has the same sealing element as

MWK® 60** SPETOMET® MWK® 50 but a centring ring with pre-determined breaking
groove is added to improved blowout resistance.

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MWK® 65 gasket has the same sealing element as

MWK® 65** SPETOMET® MWK® 55 but a centring ring with pre-determined breaking
groove is added to improve blowout resistance.

SPIRAL WOUND GASKETS

SPETOSPIR®

Designation Sketch Description

SPETOSPIR® SPETOSPIR® S – spiral wound gasket made from alternate layers of

S metal strip and filler; reinforced only by the metal piles welded together,
wound around the soft filler. S style is applied in male and female, tongue
and groove flange, also in the joints with so called multi-channel load
transmission.

SPETOSPIR® SPETOSPIR® SW gasket with inner ring providing additional strength,

SW made from the same metal as the strips; besides giving strength, the ring
fills the space between flange bore and the inside diameter, minimizes
erosion of flange faces; applied in male and female flanges, even in very
high pressures.

SPETOSPIR® SPETOSPIR® SZ gasket with outer centring ring, facilitating proper

SZ installation of the gasket; outer ring also protects gasket from blowout
and provides the space for coding the gaskets with digits, letters and
colour, which inform about the gasket’s style, materials and manufacturer;
in some constructions used as a compression stop. Gasket engineered
for flat and raised face flanges; for applications in flanges above PN 40
(class  300) and when the filler is PTFE, SWZ style is recommended. As
standard, centring ring is made from carbon steel, painted or galvanized.

SPETOSPIR® SPETOSPIR® SWZ gasket has two metal rings: outer (centring) and inner
SWZ – reinforcing; due to „enclosing” the proper sealing element between
the to rigid metal rings, the gasket has excellent compression resistance;
the style recommended for flat face and raised face flanges over PN 40
(class  300), for gaskets with PTFE filler also of lower PN; for gaskets of
large dimensions (above 800mm) suggested as standard. The standard
inner ring is made from the same material as gasket’s metal strip in the
sealing area.

SPETOGRAF® SERIES 600

Designation Sketch Description

SPETOGRAF® SPETOGRAF® GUS® 600 gaskets are recommended for extremely

GUS® 660 difficult applications, with very high loads both static and dynamic, as well
as for old, damaged flange faces or where limited bolt stress is the case.
SPETOGRAF® These may be flanges adjacent to pumps, compressors, gate valves etc.
GUS® 660 Z self-compensating pipelines, floating heads, inspection holes; application
of properly selected layers eliminates necessity of reconditioning of flange
faces and ensures very good elastic recovery as well as compenastion
of bolt relaxation; gasket is resistant to external loads, blowout and has
constant axial dimension (important for machine construction); has very
good tightness. Main applications of SPETOGRAF® GUS® 660 gaskets
are large heat exchangers, vessels found in chemical industry sealing
the floating head and vessel’s bottom, valves in petrochemical industry,
refineries and power plants, pipelines in power engineering installations.
SPETOGRAF® GUS® 660 gaskets are individually selected for specific
applications by SPETECH engineers.
Metallic core of 660 style gasket is equipped with grooves which are filled
by elastic material. Commonly this can be layers of pure elastic graphite,
or layers of elastic graphite with metal insert. Sometimes also spiral wound
gasket are installed in grooves.
Special construction of carrier ring is the profile with asymmetric
positioning of the grooves in the core. Such solution allows to minimize
thickness of the core – what is especially useful for applications where flat
gasket is a must.

SPETOGRAF® SPETOGRAF® GUS® 670 I gaskets are applied in very narrow flange
GUS® 670 I faces in tongue and groove as well as in male and female flanges;
properties similar to those of SPETOGRAF® GUS® 660.

cases it is applied in this construction, most frequently it is a metal core of
SPETOMET® MPL® 12 style.

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MPL® 12 gasket is manufactured from corrugated steel rings

MPL® 12 covered on both sides with soft sealing material, e.g. graphite or expanded
PTFE, corrugation increases conformability of the gasket whereas layers
improve the tightness of the sealed joint - also with the ceramic layers for
the furnace covers and dust pipelines; applied in tongue and groove, male

SPETOMET® MPL®
Designation Sketch Description

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MPL® 20 flat gasket in single metal jacket with an opening
MPL® 20 is used for narrow flanges; manufactured from metal sheet, which
encapsulates soft filler; such profile protects the soft edge of the gasket’s
material; most of gaskets of this style are made from copper and its width is
less than 6 mm; for larger cross sections MPL® 23 style is recommended.

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MPL® 21 gasket is similar to MPL® 20 but the metal jacket
MPL® 21 is overlapped and closes the soft filler; maximum width of the gasket is
also 6 mm.

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MPL® 23 are double jacketed gaskets made from two pieces
MPL® 23 of metal and soft filler. This gasket is the most commonly used profile for heat
exchangers and other vessels: the two piece metal construction gives extra
rigidity which allows for large diameters; may be manufactured in various
shapes and dimensions; also the profile with centring ring MPL® 23 Z.

SPETOMET® SPETOMET® MPL® 23 I gasket has additional metal part inside the
MPL® 23 I filler stabilizing the profile (prevents excessive, transverse deformation
of the gasket); the metal inside inreases gasket’s strength, by improving
its resistance to stress; thickness above 3,2 mm is recommended for this
profile in order to apply the metal part; this is a proper solution also for the
gaskets with the desired end thickness.

SPETORING® RTJ

Designation Sketch Description

SPETORING® SPETORING® RTJ (octagonal) gaskets have been widely used mainly
RTJ in oil and gas industry; they are manufactured from steel (special alloys
OCTAGONAL on request) and installed in special flange arrangement; at present only
trapezoidal arrangement is applied for octagonal RTJ-R gaskets; RTJ-R
gaskets have total blowout resistance, its design provides two sealing
barriers, therefore they do not fail in very dangerous installatios; in
special styles available also as a plug, wiht centring ring, galvanized;
manufactured almost exclusivily in dimension standards according to
NPS 36, non standard up to 3000 mm.

SPETORING® SPETORING® RTJ (oval) gasket is manufactured from steel or special

RTJ OVAL alloys, available in the same dimensions as octagonal gasket; may be
applied also in very old, semi-round grooves in flanges; gasket is blowout
resistant, has two sealing barriers; due to the contact area between
semi-round surface of the gasket and the flange face the stress is built
up which helps improve tightness; applied in installations containing
dangerous medium; in special styles available as the plug with centring
ring or galvanized; manufactured almost always in dimension standards
according to NPS 36, non standard up to 3000 mm.

SPETORING® SPETORING® RTJ-RX gasket is a modified version of RTJ-R which has

RTJ-RX higher active internal pressure resulting in increased contact stress;
RTJ-RX gaskets are manufactured from various sealing materials; in special
constructions with galvanic coating.

SPETORING® SPETORING® RTJ-BX gaskets are engineered for the highest pressure
RTJ-BX ratings up to 20.000 psi; it is a solution requiring special facing
arrangement; blowout resistant, opening in the axial direction has the
function of balancing the pressure loads in the situation when the inner
sealing barrier is not tight; the gasket manufactured only in dimension
standards to NPS 30.

SPETORING® Beside the standard RTJ seals we provide RTJ oval or octagonal, RX and
RTJ-BLIND BX profiles as blind rings. Shape of the rings is similar to seals which
they replace, but commonly they are equipped with a plate which facilitate
installation for maintenance service and also enable to include any
necessary information of basic data of the connection.

Spectacle Blind RTJ gaskets are used in purpose to separate pipesystems

or to connect with each other. Set of two Ring Type Joints of certain size
(where one of the gasket is blind and the other is a ring) is connected by
flat section of steel. Such Spectacle-Blind pair is applied in pipelines which
regularly need to be separated from other installations.
When pipeline is in “working conditions”
Spectacle Blind RTJ is mounted in the
RTJ- „open” position so that flow through the
SPECTACLE- pipe is possible. “Maintenance condition”
BLIND on a pipeline section is the reason to
change the spectacle to the „close”
position. In such case, after removal of
bolts, the Spectacle Blind is rotated and
after re-installing the bolts, pipe is blocked
and no flow is possible.

Description:
Lens Gaskets took the name form lens shape that they have. Thanks to
Pmax (bar) 420 320* spherical contact area of the gasket with the conical flange arrangement
the high value local stress is accumulated and very good tightness is
achieved. Special shape of the lens gaskets and being produced from
Qmax (MPa) 650 400* solid metal makes that lens gaskets are resistant to contact stress over-
pressure. Another key advantage of Lens Gasket is that these seals are
practically totally resistant to blowout, although, unlike RTJ gaskets, they
have only one sealing barrier. Alle the lens style seals request special
spherical shape of flanges.

Description:
The SPETORING RM Weld Ring Gaskets, Lip Seals and Metal Dia-
Pmax (bar) 1500 500* phragms are suitable for applications where it is absolutely necessary to
have a leak proof joint and also where a limited opportunity for disas-
sembling is required (which effects long time period between sched-
Qmax (MPa) 650 400* uled revisions). Special reasons for Weld Ring requirement may also be:
containment of hazardous medium and combination of difficult working
conditions (temperature shocks, vibrations, axial or lateral flange move-
ments, etc.).

The main equipment where these parts are applied are pressure ves-
sels (heat exchangers, thermal reactors, chemical apparatus, etc). Other
group of applications are pipelines which, however, request less sophis-
ticated Weld Rings constructions normally.

SPETECH Weld Ring seals are manufactured to fit to EN, ASME, DIN,
GOST, JIS, WN, OST or any other standards flanges. Commonly they
are individually designed according to customer constructions and spec-
ifications.

SPETECH is supplying Weld Ring seals in diameter up to 6000mm, Di-

aphgrams up to 3000mm. “One piece” seamless construction of the
rings should be available for most of requests. Gasket materials are
generally recommended to be the same or similar to the pipe or flange
materials but all the times the Spicification settlement is the priority.
The most popular materials for SPETORING RM and RD are Nickel
based alloys, Vessel steel grades, Stainless Steel and many others are
shown in ‘Common Used Materials’ table. Any other material on re-

SPETORING® R-M
Designation Sketch Description

SPETORING® SPETORING® R-M 1 is a basic solution for application where the space
R-M 1 between flanges is limited. Widely met as per DIN 2695 standard 4mm
thick rings. Easiest solution either concerning material consumption and
manufacturing cost.
Inside weld seams are the only available option (errors on inside joint
welding are difficult to repair). Any customised dimensions also available.
Rewelding: can be re-welded up to 5 times, material loss ~3mm each.
Radial compensation up to 0.3mm.

SPETORING® This solution is technically based on idea similar to what is in R-M 1 case
R-M 2 but both outside weld seams/ inside weld seams option is available which
facilitate installation.
Customised construction of SPETORING® R-M 2 are available – starting
from this profile all profiles with outside weld seam can be deliver with
partitions. Rewelding up to 5 times (3mm each loss).
Please not the radial compensation is only like 0.1mm.

SPETORING® First of hollow lip weld-ring seals solution. It performs more thermal
R-M 3 and pressure shock resistance compare to R-M 1 and R-M 2. But the
‘membrane’ effect is yet not that visible as the hollow lip small dimensions.
Customize cross-sections and partitions available.
Outside weld seams available but as all this construction is strongly
determined by existing limitations (not enough space between flanges for
R-M 5 and existing redial movements of the joint deserving the hollow-lip
solution) the access to outside seam is difficult, which effect request of
high performance in welding process.
The SPETORING® R-M 3 is Weld Ring Seal is possible to be installed for
application with bars (partitions).
However re-welding is possible approx. 2-3 times. Radial compensation
up to 0.5mm.

METAL DIAPHRAGMS
SPETORING® R-D
Designation Sketch Description

SPETORING® A metal diaphragm for welding is a type of seal used for flat covers
R-D 12 in exchangers operating at high pressures, in high temperatures, or,
simultaneously, with a high level of both of these parameters. They are
also used for the hazardous media, e.g. in hydrogen installations.
They are made of a thin plate of stainless steel or of special alloys. The
R-D 13 plate is usually welded circumferentially with an inguinal seam or butt
welded onto the chamber flange or onto the chamber plater. It is also used
as an anticorrosive shield. One of the advantages of using the welded
diaphragm is reduction of the requirements related to screws because
the seal (the welded diaphragm) forms tension at the zero level.
R-D 14
Regardless of the circumferential weld, the diaphragm is pressed by the
lid onto its outer side, like in the flange-screw connection; which results in
different peripheral part geometries.
On occasions, in order to reduce the welding stress as well as to reduce
R-D 16 the pressure resulting from pressure- and temperature load in motion
conditions, in the chamber flange there are special malleable rings, which
improve the elasticity of the connection between the diaphragm and the
chamber flange.
R-D 18 Spheric diaphragms are used for shell and tube heat exchangers’
chamber locks. Thanks to their special profile, they have certain elasticity,
which reduces the stress generated by either welding or by exposure
to pressure and temperature. Their sphericity is closely matched to the
R-D 21 motion conditions and ensures consistent moves of its peripheral part as
well as that of the internal part of the shell.

pressure and in place of the flanged connection, the breech-lock is being
used the main advantage of using this lock is much smaller size and weight,
comparing to the conventional screw-mounted lid. The main element of
R-D 32 the breech-lock is the diaphragm fitted with a peripheral seal through
the pressure-blocking rings system. In some cases, the diaphragm can
be equipped with a central gap, if a revisory gap is provided in the lid.
The advantage of this approach is avoidance of the need to cut the weld
during inspections.

Designation Sketch Description

SPETORING® R-Double Cone Seal SPETORING® R Double Cone Seals are provided commonly to
highest duty pressure vessels equipment (mostly in chemical processing
industry). Typical working pressure 50-350 bars and typical temperature
up to 400°C, diameter between 500 to 3000mm. They are self-energized
gasket which construction details need to be designed essentially by the
device designers. Although they look similar to octagonal RTJ the rule of
sealing effect ot the joint is different than RTJ.
How it works? After being acted by internal pressure, double cone
R seal expands outward and the contact pressure between gasket and
flange increases substancially. Normally at the conical surfaces of
R
the SPETORING® R Double Cone Seal layers of soft material are
installed – mostly silver, aluminium, cooper or graphite with thicknes of
0,5÷1,5mm. To increase friction conical surfaces of gasket (which contact
Layers for Double Cone Seal with flange surfaces) are often additionally machined: either with 2-5
groovs (0,5÷1mm deep) or given convex shape.
Please note that during fitting the radial gap of 0,05mm for every 100mm of
diameter of non-assembled seal should be precisely controlled and at the
cylindrical, supporting surface of cover should be machined longitudinal
grooves; Hence internal pressure act on the cylindrical internal surface of
the gasket.

COVER GASKETS

Designation Sketch Description

SPETORING® R-Delta Seal SPETORING® R-Delta seal is used for pressure vessel covers. It requires
a special flange construction with triangular grooves. How it works? The
total depth of grooves is a little bit lower than the hight of gasket in the
non-installed state. When tighten up the bolts, the cover gently approaches
to the shell flange. After starting the pressure the delta seal bends cross
section and contacts linearly in bottoms of grove under high contact
pressure. As being acted by internal pressure the delta seal bends even
more outwards, and the conical surface of seal tightly contacts the conical
surfaces on seal grooves. Please note the high machining accuracy and
high precision of any surfaces of SPETORING® R-Delta style joints are
required!
Also the edges of the delta seal can imprint bottoms of grooves, so – after
diassambling – machining of grooves and – probably – new gasket with
new (increased) hight will be required.
Application range of delta seal is up to 2000mm of diameter temperature
mostly lower than 400°C and pressure lower than 400 bars.

SPETORING® R-Bredtschneider Seal SPETORING® R – Bredtschneider Seal is another sulotion used to

(Wedge Seal) secure tightness in to self – tightening covers. The construction of seat
for this kind of seal is very special and need perfect geometry of conical
contact surface both: at cover and shell. For positioning and blocking of
gasket special segment ring is needed.
The pretightening force of bolt (must be strain bolts in cover and in
segmented ring) is very low. The sealing action is coming from internal
pressure acting on cover. This working (medium) pressure is multiplicated
into contact pressure of SPETORING® R in two ways:
1. because surface of cover is many times smaller than contact surface,
2. because wedge geometry of seal multiply axial force into radial contact
force.
Normally Bredtschneider Seal is manufactured from the material softer
than cover and flange material (after installation seal ring is closed almost
“hydraulically” from all sides). Please note disadvantage can be observed,
when material of ring is too soft and extrude in gaps between cover and
shell. In can cause the disassambly difficulties.
Good sealing properties can be kept even when the temperature and
pressure fluctuate. The typical application range for SPETORING® R –
Bredtschneider Seal are: pressure to 400 bars, temperature 350°C and
diameter 1300mm.
In praxis geometry of this kind of seals can vary: cross section may by
symmetrical or not and face surface can be perpendicular to axe of shell
or not.

SPECIAL SOLID METAL SEALS

Designation Sketch Description

SPETORING® SPETORING® R-B convex style seals different than others seals described
R-B in this section are widely installed in the standard flanges. Due to the metal
Convex – metal contact between the convex surface of the gasket and the flange
face the tightness of the joint is very high, gasket is resitance to blowout,
Gasket
chemical attack and fire-safe. Additionally convex gasket geometry in
the same moment ensures very long service life time and protects flange
face from being damaged. The rule is that the SPETORING® R-B convex
gaskets should be produced from material softer than flange faces and
in the in special cases you can use galvanic coating or layers (silver,
aluminium) to achieve this. Convex seals are manufactured in accordance
with many dimension standards beside popular international (ASME, EN,
JIS, GOST, etc most popular are DIN 7603 form D for union fittings and
DIN 837 for pressure gauges and associated valves).

SPETOACTIV® This special self energized metal seal is the only existing self energized
R-K metal seal that request no groove in the flange. It is a combination of self
Self energized energized v-ring with centering ring which works also as supporting (anti
metal seal collapsing) ring. Thanks to the SPETOACTIV® R-K supporting ring this
seal might be used on flat flanges with no need to have time and efforts
taking groove machining operation, which should make Self-Energized
Seals an optional solution for most of trouble making applications.

SPETORING® Called also as wire ring. This seals is capable to work in a very high
R-O solid load stress, provide good performance in high pressure environment, can
be used to seal three or more surfaces in one moment. Since there are
no standards for SPETORING® R-O this king of seal they are always
manufactured basing on customer specific demand (material, size, cross-
section).

SPETORING® SPETORING® RTJ transition rings are used for sealing ring type joints in
RTJ which the flanges have different ring groove diameters or even for jointing
Transition two flangesd being totally different style (flange with grove with flat flange

laminate being the combination of the metal foil (0,05 mm of thickness)
and of graphite foil (1.1 g/cm3 of density, nuclear purity, 0,45 mm of
SPETOGRAF® thickness) joined in a special non-glue process and impregnated on
GUS® 40 PRO the surface. The SPETOGRAF® GUS® 40 PRO gaskets are produced
of Sigraflex® Hochdruck Pro sheet, holding a TA-Luft certificate. Those
gaskets are of extreme resistance, the greatest of all the currently used
soft sealing materials; they are used on tonque and groove type, notch-
SPETOGRAF®
appendage type and flat and raised flange surfaces in any dimension
GUS® 40 APX2
standards; they are typically used under high-pressure water gauge
glasses. The SPETOGRAF® GUS® 40 gaskets are frequently used as very
narrow, <5 mm wide gaskets.

SPETOGRAF® The SPETOGRAF® GUS® 41 gaskets are preferably used on flat and
GUS® 41 raised flange surfaces due to its increased tightness, blowing resistance,
erosion resistance and resistance against so-called “intoxication” of the
gasket. It is deemed to be high-quality taking into account the above
criteria. The SPETOGRAF® GUS® 43 is used in review hatches, cleaning
holes, etc.

The SPETOGRAF® GUS® 41 I with a metal centralizing ring; they allow

SPETOGRAF®
for optimizing the connection by decreasing the active width of the gaskets
GUS® 41 I
and for saving the sheet surface; the steel centralizing element allows also
for producing elements which facilitate the assemblye.g. in case of vertical
materials.

SPETOGRAF® The SPETOGRAF® GUS® 42 gaskets with an additional outer eylet

GUS® 42 increasing its rigidness and oxidization resistance.

SPETOGRAF® Corrugated graphite tape basing on Sigraflex graphite foils programm.

GUS® 1000 Available wide range of graphite grades, different thicknesses from 0,25 to
1,00mm, densities from 0,7 to 1,0 g/cm3. Possible to be delivered also with
self adhesive surface. GUS®1000 can be used as the sealing layer in large
diameters metal gaskets, as well as self existing seal of joints requesting very
thin seal, but also many other applications are possible.

GORETM GORE™ Series 500 gasket tape helps to achieve greater sealing
SERIES 500 efficiencies with large steel piping and equipment. Unlike sheet gasketing,
it can be quickly formed in place, installs easily, and reduces expensive
material scrap. GORE™ Series 500 gasket tape is the ideal choice
for sealing large diameter flanges. Made from 100% multi-directionally
expanded PTFE, it combines superior sealing performance and efficiency.
Tighter and more creep resistant than other gasketing alternatives, it
also has the advantages of a form-in-place sealing solution. Without
“donut hole” scrap from cutting, it is often more cost effective. Because
it is customized at installation, long lead times are eliminated and gasket
inventories are reduced. Conformable and highly compressible, this tape
forms a very tight seal. Strong multidirectionally expanded PTFE gives
excellent creep resistance for a long-lasting seal that withstands virtually
any chemical process.

GORETM GORE™ Series 1000 gasket tape is a form-in-place gasket for glasslined
SERIES 1000 equipment that guards against premature gasket failure. Unlike PTFE
envelope gaskets, it will not degrade due to chemical attack, and will
ensure a tight and long-lasting seal. GORE™ Series 1000 gasket tape
is the ideal choice for sealing large diameter flanges. Made from 100%
multi-directionally expanded PTFE, the entire gasket is chemically inert.
As a result, the user will not experience the sealing problems associated
with aggressive media or outside environments. This unique gasket tape
conforms to the imperfections common in glass-lined flange surfaces,
while maintaining dimensional stability for superior sealing reliability. This
gasket tape can be installed easily and quickly, yielding initial savings. And
since it minimizes unexpected process upsets, process productivity gains
are also achieved.

GORETM GORE™ Series 800 are gaskets combining the qualities of expanded
SERIES 800 PTFE resistant to medium transfer (diffusion); they are used for flanges
Universal of fixtures made of delicate materials where little assembly stresses are
Pipe Gasket achieved. They assure durable tightness, even in changeable working
conditions of the flange.

GORETM GR GORE™ GR is a sealing sheet and gasket manufactured from multi-

directionally oriented expanded PTFE; in order to improve installation
properties, the sheet is harder and has higher density, which is important
while installing the gaskets in the vertical flanges, especially in case of
medium and large diameters; SPETOFLON® TEX FGR sheet available
as an alternative.

SPETOFLON® SPETOFLON® TEX DF is a joint sealant in the form of tape from mono-
TEX DF directionally orientated expanded PTFE, the most common of all “formed
in place” sealing solutions; the sealant has excellent forming characteristics
even to the worn and damaged surfaces, cutting the ends of the tape
using skiving technique is not necessary during the installation; the risk of
relaxation and cold flow is limited due to small thickness of the sealant in
the flange, tape with adhesive strip, available in 9 sizes; sealant considered
necessary for the maintenance services; as an alternative GORE TM DE
joint sealant also available.

SPETOFLON® SPETOFLON® TEX DE is the modern generation of sealants formed in

TEX DE place, has rectangular cross section of even distribution of density in the
one-directionally expanded PTFE; such construction allows for application
of narrower sealants instead of traditional solutions, i.e. SPETOFLON®
TEX  DF (GORE TM DF), the sealant is available in 5 sizes due to wider
application range, which substitute 9 sizes of DF sealant; as and alternative,
GORE TM DE joint sealant also available.

SPETOFLON® SPETOFLON® TEX FGR material and gasket manufactured from multi-
TEX FGR directionally expanded PTFE in a proprietary technology; easily formable
material, easy to cut by means of the simplest toos, may be used as a
universal sealing material.

SPETOFLON® SPETOFLON® TEX FGR-H is composed of the core made from sintered
TEX FGR-H PTFE and two layers of SPETOFLON® FGR; such desing reduces active
area of the gasket, therefore it can be installed with low assembly loads,
e.g. in epoxy-fibre composite flanges; due to PTFE core other materials
are not introduced and exposed to the sealed medium; gasket is a very
economical solution and is able to seal irregular flange surfaces.

SPETOFLON® SPETOFLON® TEX FGR-F is manufactured by pre-forming SPETOFLON®

TEX FGR-F TEX FGR gasket which reduces the active sealing area on one hand, on
the other, closes the paths between anti-difusion zones, this version is
designed for the non rigid flanges e.g. from epoxy-fibre composite and
similar; gasket’s sealability is not affected by the load changes; additionally,
easily formable in the irregular flange faces.

SPETOFLON® SPETOFLON® TEX FGR-J gasket composed of the corrugated 316  L

TEX FGR-J stainless steel ring (other materials on agreement) and two layers of
SPETOFLON® FGR (GORE™ GR as an option); thanks to the corrugated
metal ring the gasket has improved recovery, strength, resistance to
relaxation and blowout; it is a gasket highly recommended for dangerous
media (toxic, explosive, etc.); it is necessary to choose the metal compatible
with the sealed medium.

difusion zone on the inner circumference which protects the material of the
instert from contact with medium; thickness of the insert in practice is not
limited; gasket’s construction minimizes non-active space in the joint and
provides erosion resistance in case of high flow velocity of the medium.

Designation Sketch Description

SPETOBAR® SPETOBAR® BAS® 300 is a material based on aramid firbres and other
BAS® 300 non-asbestos fillers bonded by mix of high quality elastomers in the
special calendring process; the material has good forming properties,
low permeability, good mechanical properties and withstands high
temperatures; it can be applied as a “universal” sealing solutions within
the range of medium temperature and mechanical loads; material can
work in services with exposure to oxygen; as standard, BAS® 300 has
anti-adhesion surfaces of high coefficient of friction; used in hydraulic,
cooling systems (containing freon and based on water cooling agents),
water solutions, fuels, solvents, de-freezing agents, alkalis.

SPETOBAR® SPETOBAR® BAS® 340 is a non-asbestos sheet or a gasket based on

BAS® 340 aramid firbres, non-organic fillers with high quality elastomer as a binder,
manufactured in a multi-stage calendering process, has mechanical and
temperature characteristics distingishing it from other fibre materials; it
is physiologically safe, without any pigments, exhibits excellent tensile
strength, shearing and stress resistance; in service with gas and liquids,
e.g. oils, fuels, freons, liquid gases, solvents, hot water and steam but
without pressure and temperature fluctuations1); easy to handle, exhibits
outstanding chemical resistance and ability to work in high pressures;
Surface treatment: as standard, SPETOBAR® BAS® 340 is coated with
a nonstick agent of high coefficient of friction (stabilizes the gasket in
the joint), therefore no further steps to improve surface characteristics
are necessary; only in situations where relative movement is the case,
sheet (gasket) may be delivered with graphited surface on one or both

have negative influence on permeabilty, due to the special technological
process; BAS® 340 I is used in chemical industry, refineries, power plants,
coke plants, in all places where substantial pressure and temperature loads
occur and where the flange faces are narrow, BAS® 340 I has a non-stick
top and bottom layer of high coefficient of friction; in special version –
when used in components which rotate on te gasket during assembly, a
graphite coating on one or both sides of the gasket is required.

SPETOBAR® SPETOBAR® BAS® 340 R is a sheet made of the same fibre and
BAS® 340 R elastomeric composition as SPETOBAR® BAS® 340; it has internal
reinforcement of zinc-plated carbon steel net which increases its resistance
for tearing, squeezing and cutting.

OFFSET SEALS
FOR BUTTERFLY VALVES
SPETORING® RQ-E, RT-E
Code Sketch Description

SPETORING® In terms of the kinematics of the butterfly valve disc movement double
RD-E, triple RT-E and quadruple RQ-E eccentric seals may be
RQ-E distinguished. This structural characteristic has a signifcant impact on the
geometry of the sealing surface. The purpose of the multi-eccentric valve
structures is to minimize the friction in the area of sealing while closing and
opening the butterfly valve.
This is especially important issue for seals containing metal inside, due to
the low flexibility of these seals (in compare to rubber based materials) and
the real risk of wear due to grinding.
The difference between triple- or quadruple- eccentric seals aremay
assume different contours, especially round or elliptical.
All our offset seals are always made according to a precise documentation
of the manufacturer of the butterfly valve.
The range of dimensions of the internal metal laminate seals for butterfly
valves is as follows is up to DN3000 (NPS 120”).
Tel. + 48 33 818 41 36, www.spetech.com.pl

The most popular form of RQ-E, RT-E, RD-E seals are a graphite-metal

laminated structure made of alternately combined layers of foil made

of expanded graphite (characterized by specifed quality, thickness and
Ttriple-eccentric seals with circular outline

density) and inter-layers made of flat metal elements.

The geometry of the seal and its material characteristics are determined in
detail by the manufacturer of the fttings. This way, the specifed leakage rate,
durability, drive and structure of the valve is determining the selection of:
– the number of metal layers (in general, the layers may vary in terms of
thickness – their number is usually between 2 and 12 and their thickness
is usually between 0.5 and 5.00mm)
SPETORING® – the number and the thickness of the soft inte layers (also in this case the

layers may vary in thickness – their thickness is usually between 0.25

RT-E and 2.00mm, while their density is between 0.7 and 1.3 g/ccm).

RL-S available both for 2-offset and 3-offset valves is especially shaped elastic

Shape of the SPETORING® RL-S can be given either by spinning or by
machining. Springiness, mechanical strengths and other features may
be modified by specific construction, shape and wide choice from many
available materials.

SPETORING® RL-S is normally installed in the body of the valve and

(what is different from sandwich construction of offset rings) RL-S seal is
resistant to any potential erosion due to lack of any soft material inside.
But in the same moment (and in some of construction options), the RL-S
seal is performing with much higher elasticity and self-energizing effect.
Such features make the this solution very useful to work in high / frequently
changing pressure and temperature.
Details of this SPETORING® RL-S (construction / geometry / material
used / additonal surface plating) always are settled in co-operation
between Spetech and valve manufacturer. Such solution we deliver for
valves with size up DN3000 (or 120” adequately).

BALL VALVES SEATS

Code Sketch Description

SSA 10 The SSA 10 seat is a basic form of seats applied mostly to ball-type small-
dimension fittings designed for cold-media and/or moderate-pressure
applications.
They are made mostly of pure PTFE (pure PTFE provides the smallest
possible friction factor and good chemical resistance), or of PTFE filled
with carbon or graphite. Metal/graphite and/or impregnated synthetic
graphite compositions are not so popular.
Though SSA 10 it is a very cheap structure, applications to high pressure
and/or temperature systems are somehow restricted regarding resistance
and/or creep properties. In case PTFE is considered, secondary sealing (in
the body) is not required, because the seat can satisfy this need.

SSA 11 The SSA 11 seats without housings can be made as multi-component

PTFE structures. Such a design can be fire-safe, practically with no
modifications of the structure. This is a multi-component seat of principally
PTFE and graphite. In regular applications, the sealing is of a PTFE-metal
type. In case of fire (PTFE is burnt off) sealing of the ball is transformed in
a metal-graphite composition.
Since the profile of SSA 11 has practically the same dimensions as
a SSA 10 profile, adjustment of the internal sealing structure to fire hazard
requirements is restrained to modification of the seat only.

SSA 20 Designing ball-type fittings suitable to meet high technical requirements,

abrasive media, and/or big diameters, their ball seats have to be tear
reinforced and erosion protected. One of possible solutions is installation
of a sealing component between external ring (tearing) and internal ring
(erosion). Such a structure SSA 20 can be applied to seats of PTFE and/
or PTFE composite material, as well as to sealing components of carbon
and/or graphite. Depending on material of a seat and/or the shape of
a sealing ring back, secondary sealing can be avoided. Such a structure
allows for using floating seats.

BALL VALVES SEATS

Code Sketch Description

SSA 30 The SSA 30 seats of fittings, trilaterally enclosed in steel housings, have
the highest strength properties and/or erosion resistance. It can freely
move inside the body, according to the structure concept.
Such a structure requires to install secondary packing between the body
and seat. The structure can be used as a fire-resisting product with a seat
of PTFE. In case of fire, upon PTFE is burnt off, the steel housing operates
as a sealing.
Either PTFE composite materials or carbon/graphite materials can be
used, as well as other suitable materials on a customer requirement, as for
instance polymer materials.

SSA 40 The SSA 40 seat is a popular type for ball-type fittings, because secondary
sealing can be avoided, and they can be used in great axial-movement
applications.
The structure is designed for seats with sealing components made of PTFE
or PTFE compositions.
The metal component protects against erosion of the disk spring. The
outside ‘soft’ cylindrical surface of the seat provides leak-proofness, even
when moving. The steel ring can be used also as an emergency fire-
resistant sealing. For such an application, it should be machined.

SSA 50 Intending to prevent failure of ball cocks having seats made of brittle
materials, e.g. made of synthetic carbon or graphite, shrinkable steel
mountings are used. Between the mounting and the seat, there can be
inserted glue (caulking), and inside the mounting structure a room for
secondary sealing can be constructed.

SSA 60 Seats of a SSA 50 profile are applied mostly to ball-type taps with balls
supported on trunnions (trunnion ball valves). The seat has to be held
down to the ball by pressure thrust, because the ball itself is fixed.
There are a number of various seat structures having capacity to move under
pressure, and their geometry is designed to reduce thrust of the seat against
the ball when the valve is opened, hence life of the valve is extended.
Regarding the SSA 50 structure, the basic part of the sealing is the steel
component, whilst the sealing piece itself is a pad of a relatively small
section.

valves and vessels as so called self-sealing gasket. The gap between the
body and the cover, cover and the press ring, press ring and the body
GRAFMET® should not be bigger than 0.7mm for GRAFMET® 960; for bigger
962 gaps and when contact stresses δ>100 N/mm2, GRAFMET® 962 is
recommended. At present, GRAFMET® 960 is reinforced with stainless

DOUBLE SEALING SYSTEMS

Designation Sketch Description

SPETOMET® MWK® 28 / Double Sealing Systems become more popular relating to the increasing
SPETOGRAF® 10 safety and reliability of plants, recently improved anti-emission ‘Clean Air Acts’,
enlarged intervals between maintenance periods.
The double sealing systems are used in bolted flange connections of appa-
ratus, valves and pipelines. Historically some first applications took place in
Nuclear Power Plants where highest tightness / reliability factors are used
since beginning. Nowadays Double Sealing Systems are one of Best
Available Technology (BAT) solution that are provided more widely by Spetech
to the market.
SPETOMET® MWK® 50 / Typical place of of application are:
SPETOSPIR® SWZ • still the nuclear plant connection requiring highest reliability and leakage
proofness technology,
• pressure vessels and Installations (pipelines) especially in the chemical in-
dustry for application with hazardous substances (toxic, odorous, explosive,
or any other) also big-size reservoirs for hazardous liquids / gases / liquid
gases.
The construction of Spetech Double Sealing Systems is that a more
rigid gasket (having less compressibility) with a high spring rate e.g.
GUS® 660/ Dryflex or GUS 660 gasket is used for the gasket in the main-load. In
SPETOSPIR® S the same construction as the secondary gasket (which is put in the off-
load position) should be used gasket with higher compressibility factor (for
example spiral wound type or pure graphite layers).
How does it work? Function of primary seal is to ensure tightness and
reliability of the connection (it works as classic gasket). Hence secondary
seal is not exposed to high pressure any more and than secondary seal
may be used just to stop any eventual leaks (passing through primary seal
or any welds in monitored area). Being such barrier secondary seal lets to
dispose leaks to leakage measuring devices in aim to provide continuous
control of tightness of the connection. If the rate of leakage rise – this is
the information that something wrong is starting with the gasket / welds
inside monitored area
The selection of Double Sealing System to be used for the gaskets in the
main-load and the off-load may be calculated by Spetech individually to
customers request. The aim of this customized calculation is to proof the
excellent tightness of the joint from one hand and and from the other hand
such calculation let to estimate flange rotation that occurs in the moment
of installing the Double Sealing System and to prevent from bad results
of such rotation.

SEALS FOR
PLATE HEAT EXCHANGERS

Sketch Description
In some industries instead of Shell & Tube plate type heat exchangers
GLUE STYLE are widely popularized. There major advantage to use plate type heat
exchangers, is that the corrugations in the plates reduces the liquid
turbulence to very limited level and the liquids flow is counter current so
that the heat transfer efficiency is always 3-5 times higher than Shell & Tube
type heat exchangers.
Plate heat exchangers in its structure is composed of a fixed frame,
a  movable frame and corrugated plates which are in between the two
frames. Hot liquid and cold liquid go through between the corrugated plates
in turn the areas separated by elastomer paths of seals. Most popular plate
heat exchangers producers are APV, AGC, Alfa Laval, Arsopi, Barriquand,
Cetetherm, Ciat, Cipriani, Fischer, Fiorini, GEA, Hisaka, Mueller, Pasilac,
Reheat, API Schmidt Bretten, Silkeborg, Sondex, Swep, Tranter, Vicarb.
To prevent leaking, a fine elastomer for the gasket is installed around
CLIP STYLE
the plates and big tightening bolts are used to put the plates together.
Construction of the Plate heat exchangers makes the seals a critical part
of this equipment responsible for life-time of all the equipment. Depending
from process medium the gasket must be chemical resistance and/or
temperature resistance. Spetech is providing seals to most existing plate
heat exchangers working in: power industry, oil processing, food and
beverage industry, sugar industry, chemistry, pulp and paper.
Most popular materials used are: NBR, HNBR, EPDM, FPM (different
grades).
There are two basic ideas of installing of the seals: Glue Style Gasket
and Clip Style Seals. Clip style gaskets are installed without any adhesive.
This improvement lets fitting of the gasket on the plate just by installing clips
into grooves on the plate. Hence gasket is high resistance against pressure
and enable for a quick and simple replacement.

SELF-ENERGIZED SEALS
SPETOACTIV® R, P

Designation Sketch Description

SPETOACTIV® SPETOACTIV® R-O gasket (metal o-ring) is applied in very rigid joints
R-O where the requirements for the tightness are high; gaskets may be delivered
in sizes up to 5000 mm; easy to install; may be additionaly coated with
PTFE, silver, lead, which facilitates forming on the flange face; manufactured
as interanlly pressurized and non-pressurized to increase contact stress,
made of various materials and in different dimension standards; may be
used (when the dimensions of the joint arrangement is appropriate) in
installations with external and internal pressure; SPETOACTIV® R-O may
also work in the triangle flange arrangement and seal three surfaces.

SPETOACTIV® SPETOACTIV® R-C gasket (metal C-ring) is one of the most popular self-
R-C energized gaskets manufactured in dimensions up to 3000 mm; used in
uneven flange faces; available in different materials, sizes and with various
coatings; this solution can be applied for service conditions (depending on
the material used) up to 870°C and 170MPa; relatively good resilience;
depending on the load the appropriate construction of the gasket should
be chosen, due to the fact that C-ring’s service depends on the direction
of the pressure; in special styles gaskets may be equipped with the inner
metal spring increasing initial loads and tighness, so that they may be
applied at low pressures.

SPETOACTIV® The SPETOACTIV® R-CS gasket (so-called metal C-ring with a spring)
R-CS is equipped with an internal spring increasing initial pressure, and
consequently the tightness and the possibility to work with low and high
pressure, it has got durable, high flexible recovery.

SPETOACTIV® SPETOACTIV® R-U gasket (metal U-ring) can be applied at low intitial
R-U loads, has good recovery characteristics, ability to compensate for the
uneven and flauty flange faces, so may be installed in the low rigidity
joints; manufactured in many material types up to the diameter of
SPETOACTIV® 1200 mm, usually without the coating; for service conditions up to 870°C
R-UM and 80MPa; like R-C i R-E styles, R-U gaskets care should be taken in
order to choose appropriate construction due to the service requirements.
SPETOACTIV® R-UM solid metal style is also available.

SELF-ENERGIZED SEALS
SPETOACTIV® R, P

Designation Sketch Description

SPETOACTIV® SPETOACTIV® P-20 is a gasket manufactured from PTFE (or modified

P-20 PTFE) with a special spring used in both static and quasi-static applications;
choice of material is determined by service conditions and gaskets may
work in pressure up to 55Mpa and temperatures from -250°C to +270°C;
thanks to the internal spring it does not lose its recovery, therefore it is
not affected by temperature and pressure fluctuations; special style with
silicone o-ring instead of metal spring reducing non-active area of the
gasket; direction of the pressure determines gasket’s construction

SPETOACTIV® SPETOACTIV® P-24 is a gasket similar to SPETOACTIV® P-20 but applied

P-24 in higher pressures, thus different external profile; may be manufactured
from various kinds of modified PTFE, therefore can work in temperatures
from -250°C to 270°C, maximum working pressure – 140 MPa.

SPETOACTIV® SPETOACTIV® P-28 gasket is used in criogenic technologies up to the

P-28 pressure of 35Mpa; it is a only a static gasket of good elastic recovery; its
spring has the construction compensating for the thermal shrinkage of the
polimer material; may be delivered in many material options in dimensions
up to 1200mm; the direction of the pressure acting on the gasket should
be considered while its construction is engineered.

GRAPHITE RINGS
Code Sketch Description

Grafmet® This is a  basic form the rings to seal up stems of fittings are made by
moulding a  graphite foil up to required density (see the table), usually
950 within 1.3÷1.7  g/cm3 (standard density: 1.4g/cm3). The cross-section
of the GRAFMET® 950 ring is usually a square, however a rectangular
cross-section is also available. GRAFMET® 950 has a  high ratio K
of transformation of axial stress forces into radial stress forces
(0.8÷0.9,  depending on its density). They are made of various types of
graphite foil – see the table. As a  standard, if no other designation is
provided, rings are made of SIGRAFLEX® C foil. When other types of foil
are used, it is designated adequately, for instance: GRAFMET® 950 TF, etc.
GRAFMET®  950 can be used individually (new fittings with stems of
rather small diameters, systems of rather low pressure) or in sets (see:
valve stuffing-box sets) as main rings responsible for sealing. It is also
a component of special packing sets.

Grafmet® Its construction form has an appearance nearing to GRAFMET® 950,

but  it is strengthened with an internal reinforcement of 316L grade
950 I steel. The reinforcement is designed to improve mechanical extrusion
resistance. Usually it is made of SIGRAFLEX® C graphite foil. Its
principal application is to work as a closing rings (top or bottom ring)
in a sealing packet (e.g. SPETOPAK® WGR 951/950). Its function is to
prevent extrusion of the proper sealing material into gaps around a gland
and/or in the bottom of a stuffing-box.
The GRAFMET® 950 I ring can be used as a distance piece in a long
stuffing-box (see: GRAFMET® HD). Aslo other materials (e.g. nickel foil)
can be used as a reinforcement in special products, and the rings can be
made of other types of the SIGRAFLEX® foil.

Grafmet® The rings are conformable, in their essence, with descriptions of

construction forms of the GRAFMET® 950 and GRAFMET® 950 I
950 PP respectively. Their differences to the above consist in two cuts in their
circumferences facilitating assembly operations. Unlike the rings with one
cut, the piece with two cuts is not deformed during assembly. Hence, the
ring of even very small diameter and considerable width can be used
without risk of damage is sealing functions. Of course, correct installation
requires accuracy and compliance to the rule that a cut in every layer is
turned by 90° to the other one.
Particularly such a construction is required for rings relatively stiff (due
to high density) or inserted with a metal foil. In such situations two cuts
provide real facility in assembly.

GRAPHITE RINGS
Code Sketch Description

Grafmet® The ring of such a form is designed to protect against squeezing (flowing)
of the sealing material (graphite) into gaps existing on place of its
952 HTX application. Another function is to minimize access of oxygen to graphite.
(upper ring) The ring can be used individually in static applications as sealing of
a cylindrical surfaces, and/or as an upper/lower ring in a packet sealing
a stuffing-box. In such a case, forged material of low tacking to the stem
material is recommended (see also: WGR 952/950), as for instance
nickel.
Applying to systems of high pressure, density of graphite is recommended
to be selected according to the working pressure (see the table), the
standard density of the product is 1.6g/cm3 and the product itself is made of
SIGRAFLEX® C foil. In case of power system applications, SIGRAFLEX® P
foil is recommended (designation is: GRAFMET® 952 HTX).

Grafmet® The rings GRAFMET® Profil#... with respective description are use
in, according to an individual design, machine, fittings, and/or pump
Profil#... construction.
Their use is related to simplification of their structures by implementation
of special sealing profiles. It allows, for instance, to reduce the number of
components, to decrease a joint outline by separation three rooms (areas)
with one seal, to reduce void pockets, to facilitate assembly operations.
Parameters that can be assorted by SPETECH® while manufacture of
GRAFMET® Profil#... profiled rings, are: geometry, density (density
distribution), stiffness/hardness, split or not split, etc. Adjustments are
made directly with the constructor of the equipment. Sealing of diameters
up to 2000mm are available, density from 1.1g/cm3 up to 1.7g/cm3.
The above solutions can contain metal pieces pressed in, and can be an
integral part of a constructure, and not only a sealing.

to VDI 2440 in compliance with requirements of the German Clean Air
WGR-TA1 Act TA-Luft. Tightness is certified for operation in a temperature of equal

SPETOPAK® high resistance to relaxation. The SPETOPAK® WGR-TA1 sealing set is
WGR-TA2 distinguished by its lowest, of all known products, assembly pressure of
40N/mm2. The reinforced closing rings allow operation of the set in highest
pressure systems (up to 300bar). When operation in a very high temperature
SPETOPAK® is planned, consultation about the reinforcing material is recommended
WGR-TA3 and use of an unstandard reinforcing material can be required.
The set consists of 6 profiled rings, each of them has a different function,
therefore the condition for effective operation is to use a complete packet.
The effect of highest tightness is achieved due to special profiles of the
rings and suitably selected density of respected items of the packet.

VDI 2440 (5,6∙10 -5 mbar∙l/(s∙m) as required by the German Clean Air Act
WGR-TA TA-Luft for temperatures lower than 250°C. It is made of multi-filament
8515 yarn consisting of carbon fiber and PTFE film. It is available both as a
cord on a spool and/or complete packet. When a cord is concerned, it
must be taken into account that achievement of required degree of leak
tightness in compliance with the TA-Luft regulation requires the ring has to
SPETOPAK® be prepared according to description contained in the certification report.
WGR-TA Also in this case, intending to achieve required effects of leak tightness, a
8535 full packet should be used observing requirements regarding method of
assembly (assembly stresses, setting up rings) and condition of the fittings
(e.g. roughness of a stem surface).

SPETOPAK® Please note that SPETECH others sets of TA-Luft packing sets are soon to

SPETOPAK® The SPETOPAK® WGR 952/950 HTX sealing set consists of two types
of rings: closing rings (on top and bottom) reinforced with steel members,
WGR and the appropriate sealing rings placed in a middle of the packet height.
952/950 The rings are made of the SIGRAFLEX® P foil providing the highest, as
HTX achieved today, resistance to oxidation.
Due to the treatment, i.e. implementation of a special construction form
and the special material, SIGRAFLEX® P, the packet can be applied to
systems of highest pressure (depending on the structure of the sealing
joint: 630bar) and temperature up to 700°C.
If the temperature is to be higher than 450°C, you are kindly requested to
contact us to select the best metal material.

SPETOPAK® The SPETOPAK® WGR 900 RR/950 sealing set is designed to be used in high-
pressure fittings, in systems of up to 300 bar pressure and 650°C temperature.
WGR The packet consists of closing rings made of SPETOPAK®  900 RR packing
900 RR/950 with special braided Inconel® reinforcement and graphite of increased
resistance to oxidation owing to special inhibitors. The Grafmet® 950 sealing
rings can also be made of graphite of increased oxidation resistance of the
foil: Sigraflex® E, Sigraflex®  APX, or Sigraflex®  P. In such a case there
are products designated: WGR 900 RR/950 E, WGR 900 RR/950 APX,
and/or WGR 900 RR/950 HTX respectively.
Advantage of the packet is its capacity to be installed on fittings without
removal of a drive (in such a case WGR 900 RR/900 P has to be used).

SPETOPAK® SPETOPAK® WGR 950 I/950 sealing is a packet designed to be used, first
of all, by fittings manufacturers. It is highly economical solution regarding
WGR its delivery cost, but must be installed on fittings without the drive. However,
950 I/950 this restriction can be avoided using GRAFMET® WGR/950 IP/950 P.
It  is designed to be used on fittings in systems of up to 300bar and/or
550°C (then the WGR 950 I/950 HTX product is recommended). The
packet can be made of various types of graphite foil, that provides capacity
to be used in a very wide range of applications. Main applications are: cut-
off valves for power industry, petrochemistry, refineries, heat engineering.
Application to industrial purposes requires proper selection of packet
density that has an effect on leak tightness (the higher density the better
tightness) and/or on facility in assembly (the lower density the easier
assombly).

SPETOPAK® The SPETOPAK® WGR 880 R/950 set is used most widely as a repair
packet (also as a WGR 880 R/950 P product) in power industry,
WGR petrochemistry, refineries, and/or heat engineering. The graphitized
880 R/950 fibre, that the closing rings are made of (reinforced additionally with
Inconel® wire), is highly suitable when installed on fittings with wide gaps
in stuffing boxes and/or on stems that have lost their nominal roughness,
because the graphitized fibre has very good mechanical properties making
squeezing of the product into gaps practically impossible. Inconel® is
used to provide durable mechanical qualities of the reinforcement in very
high temperature, and to make sticking of the product to a stem surface
practically impossible. Maximal parameters of the product operation
depend, of course, on a structure and technical condition of fittings the
product is applied to. If there are new fittings, parameters of 300bar and/
or 550°C are quite possible.

SPETOPAK® The SPETOPAK® WGR 554 sealing packet is designed for fittings of
various applications and/or metering plunger pumps. The only restriction
WGR 554 is the maximal temperature 280°C.
The packet is made of braided packing of PTFE yarn, modified according
to the purpose. The product in its basic form (designation S) is impregnated
with fine-grained teflon without any lubricant, having the best chemical
and/or ageing resistance.
In case of more dynamic applications, where addition of lubricant is
allowed, impregnation contains paraffin oil (designation WGR 554). The
packet in this version has a high wear resistance. It can be also applied to
fittings in oxygen systems (designation WGR 554 OX) with pressure up
to 150bar.

SPETOPAK® The SPETOPAK® WGR 554/160 packet is designed to be used in plunger

pumps, principally pumps batching various chemicals. The product is used
WGR mostly because of its high stiffness and resistance to squeezing. Moreover,
554/160 interlayers of filled PTFE has high thermal conductivity. Depending on
operating conditions, chemical compatibility with the medium to be sealed,
and/or durability expectation, stiffening rings can be made either of
synthetic carbon (WGR 554/carbon) or PEEK material (WGR 554/PEEK),
or highly-compacted rings of expanded graphite can be applied to a
respective purpose (WGR 554/950HD). In some specific cases, the
stiffening rings are made of brass and/or bronze.

SPETOPAK® The SPETOPAK® WGR SPECIAL#... sealing packets can be designed

according to expected critical loads. Selection of a suitable form,
WGR and material and/or dynamic structural features can provide optimal
Special#... resistance to abrasion/hydraulic impacts/temperature changes, leak-
proofness, minimal friction, etc.
There are various criteria of optimization depending on planned
application (cut-off valves, control valves, size of a stem, plunger pump,
etc.).
SPETOPAK® WGR SPECIAL#... might be equipped also in additional
special components like: anti-extrusive rings, V-shape rings, O-rings,
GRAFMET® rings, injectable compounds, machined metal rings, etc,.

DISTANCE BUSH
Code Sketch Description

SPETOTERM® The SPETOTERM® TUI 820 distance rings are made of mica composite
material of admissible operating temperature up to 650°C.
TUI 820
The material is almost absolutely chemically resistant, having good sliding
properties (low friction factor, no sticking to steel), and high ageing
resistance.
SPETOTERM® TUI 820 rings are used as distance rings in long stuffing-
boxes, sometimes being also used as guides for stems. They can be used
as closing rings (under gland) in special sets, as well.
Due to high temperature resistance, the material is implemented to sealing
engineering. Rings are produced according to respective requirements,
to customized requirement only.

Grafmet® The GRAFMET® 950 HD rings are made of expanded graphite,

compacted to 1,7g/cm3 density. They can be made also with internal
950 HD reinforcement of a steel foil 0.1 mm, ANSI 316.
The rings are used as distance rings installed at bottoms of stuffing-boxes,
and/or as a component of WGR Special high-pressure sets.
Their advantage is almost complete chemical resistance and/or resistance
to highest temperatures used in power engineering. The rings as guiding-
distance rings at bottoms of stuffing boxes can be applied to a temperature
up to 650°C. They are particularly usable when shortening stuffing-boxes
of old fittings, constructed to be used with asbestos packing previously.

SPETECH® SPETECH manufactures and delivers systems of pull and control of wear
degree of packing, so called the Live-Loading (SPETECH® LL) system.
LL They are used to compensate and identify packing wear, for compensation
of relaxation of both stuffing-box sealing and screws, and owing to a
tension indicator built in the device they facilitate assembly operations.
SPETECH® implements LL systems also into the existing fittings that have
not been constructed with intention to use LL systems. Intending to solve
such a case, SPETECH® has worked up and implemented disk springs of a
special type, having holes for stuffing-box screws.
Generally, SPETECH® LL systems can be used as centralized systems (on
a mandrel) or as uncentral systems (on screws). Materials of springs allow
to use the systems in a temperature up to 650°C.

operational support systems and maintenance. We specialise in
process seals technology as well as other areas, to include lab test-
ing and research, provision of technical advice in cooperation with
national network of technical bodies, staff training, specialised ser-
vices related to flange treatment, provision of software for measuring
flange connections, production, delivery of seals as well as optimis-
ing the sealing systems for our customers.

SPETECH is the first Eastern European company to become a mem-

ber of the European Sealing Association (ESA) 1998, partici-
pating in the Flange Gasket Division and Packing Division activities.
The ESA is a forum for the development and promotion of qualitative,
safe and eco-friendly solutions in the area of seals.
The Polish Industrial Valves Association plays a similar role in the Pol-
ish market and SPETECH are hoping to carry out similar activities
through this association.
Due to SPETECH’s specialisation in pressure equipment and being
directly connected with the PED directive, we are working closely with
a Polish supervisory authority, namely Polish Office of Technical Inspec-
tion (UDT), in the fields of pressure equipment manufacturing and
testing. For the same reason, we are also working with other supervi-
sory authorities from a wide range of countries, with jurisdiction both at
European and national levels.

As a result, we have been ISO 9001:2008 certified through the

renowned and accredited TÜV Rheinland organisation since late
1990s. ISO 9001 is a certification required for pressure equipment

GENERAL INFORMATION
This rapid development of the pressure equipment technology, par-
ticularly that related to process seals, is aiming at safety and reliability
enhancement as well as at reducing the environmental impact. All
of those aspects require the provision of production repeatability on
one hand (hence our cooperation with an EN ISO 9001 certified
organisation); and on the other hand, they also require verification of
suitability for use, while taking into consideration increasingly higher
quality requirements and standards. As a result, we collaborate with
various organisations both, national and international, with an au-
thority to certify particular quality parameters. The Leak Tightness
Quality Certificate, also known as „TA-LUFT”, for compliance with
the VDI 2200/2440 requirements is a confirmation of compliance
with the highest sealing standards, particularly for seals designed for
refinery and chemical industries when used with hazardous materials.

SPETECH’S continuous development in the field of manufacturing

of metal and soft-metal seals, particularly those made of special ma-
terials or in new types, has resulted in the development of advanced
welding techniques. We are currently EN ISO 3834÷2 certified. We
have certified qualifications for carbon steel, austenitic stainless steel
as well as nickel and titanium alloys welding. We constantly broaden
the scope of welding techniques and widen the range of the materi-
als to be processed. The certification related to this area of our work
is also obtained through TÜV Rheinland. The development of the
generative forces correlates with product development: SPETECH
run a research lab, with a focus on sealing materials. Being compli-
ant with the requirements of the EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 certifica-
tion as well as with the LAB-WT-01 guidelines, we are a subcontrac-
tor for Polish Office of Technical Inspection (UDT) and for the TÜV
Rheinland.

Currently, our lab is undertaking research and testing activities in

compliance with EN 13555, ASTM F586, F38, F36, VDI 2440
(TA Luft). We are also preparing for undertaking research and tests in
compliance with EN ISO 15848-1for gland seals.

LABORATORY OF
SEALING MATERIALS
LABORATORY OF SEALING
MATERIALS

ABOUT LABORATORY

Growing demands concerning pressure equipment and their particular

elements and, to even greater extent, seals, impose upon gasket
manufacturers an obligation to provide technical support for product
designers and end users. Apart from the tightness criterion, more and
more frequently attention is being paid to the emission level in the context
of legal regulations regarding broadly defined environmental protection.
Documents such as Clean Air Act, TA-Luft and IPPC force the end user
to apply BAT (”best available techniques”) also, or maybe above all, in
the gasket sector.
At the manufacturers’ side it is connected with the necessity to publish
in official materials (e.g., catalogues, websites) specific technical
information concerning characteristic features of the offered product.
Research aiming at development and implementation into use of new,
more tight and durable technical solutions in the gasket group is also
necessary.
Laboratory of Sealing Materials (LSM), operating at SPETECH
in Bielsko-Biała as an independent research unit, has since many years
been the holder of the certification issued by the Office of Technical
Inspection. The Laboratory uses the quality system compliant with the
requirements of PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 Std. The purpose of LSM
activity, inter alia, is to:
• obtain the leading position in Poland and Europe as regards testing of
both flat and braided sealing materials,
• create BAT “best available techniques” in the seal sector,
• test new technical solutions and seal designs aiming at their sealing and
rheological properties improvement,
• test products for compliance with Clean Air Act, TA-Luft, IPPC
documentation and other environmental protection regulations,
• develop research facilities in accordance with development directions
observed in the sealing technology,
• provide pressure equipment designers and end users with full
information about seals manufactured in SPETECH,
• conduct ordered tests both compliant with standards applied in the
laboratory and those, the conditions of which are negotiated with the
customer.

The Laboratory possesses necessary research facilities and qualified staff

implementing an appropriate research programme within the framework
of applicable procedures. Due to the fact that SPETECH is the parent
company of SMTL, conducted tests focus mainly on seals manufactured
by this company. This tests results are reflected in SPETECH publications
and, in particular, in characteristic quantities of these gaskets, presented
by the company.

TEST METHODS
Test methods

BASED ON EN 13555
A stand used for such tests as: upsetting test, determination of compressive strength,
creeping and settling tests and finally, determination of leakages. It is also used
to determine calculation coefficients for EN 1591-1:2013 algorithm. The tests are
performed under changing loads and temperatures, with the possibility of rapid heating
(up to 800°C) or cooling. Appropriate procedures are carried out with the use of modern
testing equipment, fully controlled by computer software. Samples are ring-shaped. In
addition, it is possible to conduct other tests and experiments, e.g., testing of packing or
O-ring leak-tightness. To be agreed with the customer.
• Qs max and EG at ambient temperature
• Qs max and EG at temperatures elevated to 800°C
• PQR at ambient temperature
• PQR at temperatures elevated to 800°C
• Q min(L) and Q s min(L) at ambient temperature and elevated up to 500°C
• µ G friction factor ambient temperature and elevated up to 500°C
• Other to be agreed

Stand capabilities:
• arbitrarily set and regulated system rigidity, performed with a special
presscontrolling algorithm,
• possibility to test samples up to the diameter of Φ181mm,
• maximum test pressure 300 bar,
• maximum pressure force 2000 kN,
• maximum test temperature 800°C,
• minimal discovered leakage (helium spectrometer) 5*10 -12 mbar/(l*s),
• research media: helium, nitrogen (others using the burette system),
• displacement measurement conducted centrally in the axis,
• possibility to modify the test algorithm as regards time, temperature, pressure, load
and their rise time.

BASED ON ASTM F 3149-15

Both the method and the relevant test stands allow us to specify numerically the
coefficients used in the determination of assembly and operational tensions for the
needs of the algorithms in compliance with ASME Code s. VIII and EN 13445-3. The
test also allows us to determine the level of tightness of a flat gasket in the class range
up to 10 -12 mg/(m*s). Since the shape of sample corresponds with the shape of gasket
(ring), it is possible to conduct the tests of seals being structures composed of a number
of materials (e.g., spiral gasket).
Obtained results are used in the SPETECH Research and Development Department and
with the application of experimental-iterative methods developed there, coefficients for
calculation standards – other than ASME – are defined. And so, for example, coefficient
m is converted into σm, and coefficient y into σr.

LABORATORY OF SEALING
MATERIALS

TEST METHODS
Test methods

BASED ON ASTM F 38-00 B STD.

The method allows us to determine the quantity of relaxation along with creeping. Tests are
performed with the use of appropriate tooling, and the temperatures used in testing are
RT (room temperature), 100°C and 400°C. Of course, it is also possible for other tempe-
ratures ranging from RT to 400°C to be used in tests. Due to the nature and design of the
very test stand, it is impossible to test seal constructions, and just rectangular sections cut of
materials used in flat gaskets may be tested. The stands allow us to test various materials,
from soft elastomer to pure metal ones. The tests are aimed at numerical determining of
rheological behaviours of material, especially at elevated temperatures.

BASED ON ASTM F 36-03

The stand is designed to specify the value of compressibility of soft materials used for seal
building. It also allows us to determine elastic recovery and energy of deformation. Both
parameters, compressibility and elastic recovery, are of fundamental significance in the
process of selecting a flat seal. They state the extent to which a seal is able to “fit” to the
faying surface and how it will work in conditions of operation and related displacements
of joint components.

BASED ON VDI 2440 (TA-LUFT) – FLAT GASKET

Stand to determine the flat sealing leaks. The results are compared with the require-
ments of TA-Luft standard and if condition are met the labolatory issues the certificate
of conformity. The test is carried out at room temperature, the medium is helium and the
leak measurement is used helium spectrometer.

BASED ON VDI 2440 (TA-LUFT) – STUFFING BOX SEALS

Stand to determine the parameters of stuffing box seals. The work of a stuffing box is
simulated. The input data are: stress, work pressure (helium), temperature stem stroke.
The result of a test is the value of a leakage after a number of the cycles of the stem. If
the result met the TA-Luft requirements the laboratory issues the certificate. Maximum test
temperature is 500°C.

BASED ON EN 61340-2-3
Determining the resistance and resistivity of seal materials. The values are useful in the
design of devices operating in environments described by the ATEX directive.

BASED ON EN 15848-1
This test method is determining the leakage value / tightness class of valves with usage
of usage of helium spectrometer. Tests are carried out at dedicated rig and ambient
temperature. The values are compared with conditions described in 15848 standard.
After completing the test, our LAB may issue a certificate confirming the positive results.

The Laboratory is equipped in a coordinate measuring arm. Thanks to this mechanism

it is possible to make a very precise measurements of flange joints geometry, mostly on
physical installations, and create 3D models, e.g.:
• flatness of flange face,
• non-parallelism of these surfaces,
• angular deformation of flanges.
Knowledge of exact geometry, especially in case of large diameters, significantly
contributes to find a relevant solution of tightness problems.

In cases of large scope of calculation amount complication, FEM methods are

successfully used.

Summary
SPETECH Sealing Materials Testing Laboratory conducts tests of flat seals in accordance with currently used standards of sealing material characteristic quantities
determination, and hence, becomes a part of the ”best available techniques” term. Application of modern testing methods and the Quality Management System
based on EN ISO/IEC 17025 guarantee designers and users that information with which they are provided shall allow them to select proper seal, also in terms of
applications compliant with Clear Air Act, TA-Luft and IPPC.
Now a day, the Laboratory is the only and wellknown testing laboratory of this type in Poland which possesses such a big number of test procedures connected with
seals. Applied methods allow to test almost all currently used flat gasket materials, and test results are used in design works on pressure equipment. They allow
for effective and, above all, safe selection of the flat gasket, especially in places, where safety reasons are on the first place. Continually developed and improved
measurement procedures and updated Quality Management System guarantee objective test results and high quality of rendered services.

ABOUT SOFTWARE
Engineering software EUROPARTNER® developed in SPETECH is used by designers
and service companies to select proper flange joint seal and calculate correct tension
and tightening torque. Moreover, it allows to calculate the whole flange joint as regards
strength. The program contains several calculation algorithms compliant with:
• EN 1591-1:2013
• EN 1591-1:2009
• EN 1591-1:2001
• WUDT-UC-WO-/19:10.2003
• ASME Code s. VIII
• AD 2000 Merkblatt B7/B8
• EN 13445-3 Annex G
Using the algorithm EN 1591-1HA1:2009 or ...2013 the designer, by selection of
appropriate tightness class, can influence reduction of emissions generated by the
selected seal. Thus, the joint is designed in the way compliant with requirements of such
environmental protection regulations as IPPC Directive, TA-Luft and Clean Air Act. Use
