I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students should be able
to:
a. Know a about growing media and its components.
b. Identify and perform the procedure of preparing a
growing media.
c. Appreciate the importance of a growing media to the
growth of seedlings and transplant.

II. Subject Matter:

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s activity

A. Routinary Activities

1. Prayer
2. Greetings
-Good Morning Class. -Good morning Ma’am.
3. Checking of Attendance
- Say present if you are present. -Yes Ma’am.

B. Lesson Proper

a)Review

Last meeting we have discussed on the percentage

germination of seeds.
What is the first rule? Alicia 1. The number of seeds germinated
Very good! equals the percentage germination of
the seeds.
Will you give the second rule? Jenecell
2. %germination=no.ofseeds germinated
No. seed tested
Very good!
State the third rule. Jabezz 3. Adj. amount of seed
=no.of seeds germinated
%germination

Compute the percentage germination:

Fred tested 95 eggplant seeds and only 65 germinated. What is

the percentage germination of seed? Solution:%germination
= no. of seeds germinated
No. seed tested
%G= 65
95
%G= 68%
0kay, do you have any question on determining the percentage
germination of seeds? None Ma’am.

b)Motivation

Now let’s have a group activity.

Group yourselves into four groups of eight members.
Group formation
Direction:
1. Use a manila paper and write your ideas about a
growing media, its meaning and components.
2. Choose a presentor from your groups to present your Group work
output. Presentation of output
3. You are given 5 minutes to do the activity.

c) Discussion

Today, we are going to discuss about a growing media.

Growing media are materials where plants grow. It is also
designed to support plant growth. In some cases, fields are
generally unsatisfactory for the production of plants in
containers because soil does not provide the aeration, drainage,
and water holding capacity required. This is the reason why we
need to use a growing media in the nursery.
Growing media is also designed to achieve high porosity
(having small holes allowing liquid or air to pass through) and
water retention while providing adequate aeration.
Growing media can be prepared by thoroughly mixing the
components.

Here are some components of a growing media:

1. Carbonized rice hull (CRH)-these are the hard protecting

covering of rice that is burned.
2. Sand- these are granular materials composed of finely
divided rocks.

3. Compost soil- is an organic matter that has been completely

decomposed.
4. Garden soil – this soil has its soil nutrients which is advisable
to use in gardening.

Those are the components of a growing media.

Procedure in preparing a growing media:

1. Prepare the materials needed:
Sacks, seed trays, measuring tool, compost, garden soil,
carbonized rice hull and sand.
2. Measure equally the components with a
1:1 ratio.
3. Mix thoroughly the components.
4. Put the growing media into the seed tray,
5. Arrange the seed trays in a shaded area.
-Do you have any question class?

d) Application None Ma’am

The same groupings from the first activity.
1. Prepare a growing media using the materials provided
2. Follow the procedure in preparing a growing media
3. You are given 5 minutes to perform the activity.

d) Generalization

Growing media are materials where plants grow.

Growing media can also support plant growth and designed to
achieve high porosity and water retention while providing
adequate aeration. The components are carbonized rice hull,
sand, compost, and garden soil. The ratio of measuring the
components should 1:1. The steps in preparing growing media
are as follows:
1. Prepared the materials needed.
2. Measure equally the components.
3. Mix thoroughly the components.
4. Put the growing media into the seed tray.
5. Arrange the seed trays in a shaded area.
6.
Growing media is important because these can physically
support plant growth.
The nutrients coming from the different components are
gathered to supply root necessities such as water, air and
nutrients.

Any question? -None Ma’am.
