tayong umibig. The Katipunan he established in the spirit of kapatiran, sandugo, to love your brother, and to love your
fellowmen as your brother. The first rule of the Katipunan is to love.

Rizal wrote, and Bonifacio fought.

Rizal thought and talked, and Bonifacio listened and acted.

Rizal wanted change thru peaceful means, Bonifacio believed change possible only through war. And it was through war
that the Spanish gave up.

Bonifacio represents the Filipino masses who are oppressed and he embodies the true filipino character of
courage.

Yes, Rizal became an eye opener for some but Bonifacio became a way for those who are not educated to
understand and use the words into action. Rizal has the pen but Bonifacio has the balls.

Andres Bonifacio is not literally poor his family was in middle class. He did not finish his normal education but
Bonifacio enriched his natural intelligence qith self-education. He read books about the French Revolution, biographies
of the President of US , books about contemporary Philippine penal and civil codes and novels such as Les Miserables.
Through reading Bonifacio enlighten his mind to start a revolution and be free from the colonizers.

Andres found work in a british trading firm, Fleming and company as a messenger -agent clerk, corregidor or tax
appraiser. Later he worked for a German trading firm, and was assigned to its industrial warehouse or bodega. This is
where our textbook began calling him , in a disparaging manner, a BODEGUERO WHEREAS HIS OCCUPATION WAS LISTED
AS A MANDATORIO OR ATTORNEY. (yung mandatorio meaning niya is attorney or agent, so nagkaroon ng confusion don

Aside from Tagalog and Spanish he could speak and understand English which he learned while working in the
foreign company. He never went to secondary school because he took over the family responsibility at a young age. He
was able to realized the need to wrest control of the government from the oppressive hands of the Spaniards.

Rizal was a great influencer by many people together with Bonifacio. However, when Bonifacio established KKK
and tore up his cedula on August 23, 1896 to signify freedom from oppression. It was also the beginning of the
recognition of the identity Filipino -no longer Indio. Filipinos began to see themselves as a nation and aspired to fight
Spain as a nation.

This time, the people stopped looking at Spain as a mother country and considered Filipinas as as their
motherland or Inang Bayan.

pinagtytype ko dyan ay galing kay Penelope V. Flores Ph.D is a Professor of Education Emeritus at San Francisco State
University.

" Rizal’s weakness was his failure to fully trust his people. His idea that change should come from above is the
clearest proof that he is kind of detached from what is happening on the ground. He repudiated the revolution because
he thought that reforms, to be successful, should come from above.”

Additional pa. What was the different with Bonifacio's revolutionary effort through the Katipunan was that eight
provinces joined the revolt of Tondo masses. It was the Katipunan that united the 8 provinces and made the message of
independence and freedom resound.

Unlike the nationalist poet and novelist Jose Rizal, who wanted to reform Spanish rule in Philippines, Bonifacio
advocate complete independence from Spain.

Rizal’s tendency was the natural offshoot of his status in society since he belonged to the Ilustrados (erudite,
learned). The Ilustrados were people whom the Spanish colonial authorities trusted to be their administrators over vast
tracts of land or encomiendas. Rizal’s family was well-off. This afforded Jose Rizal and many of his siblings good
education, attending the best schools like Letran, UST, and Ateneo. In fact, his family was able to send him abroad to
study. The tendency of this class of people was to be cautious and weary of social movements as they might cause
instability. They tended to veer towards reformism because they had a lot to lose in the process, although there were a
few who transcended their economic background and embraced the struggle of the people wholeheartedly. I would like
to think that Jose Rizal was one of them. On the other hand, ordinary people like Andres Bonifacio joined the armed
revolt to end their oppression because they got nothing to lose but their bondage.

 Bonifacio himself confessed that he was inspired to do what he did by the writings of Rizal
 Would bonifacio still revolt kung for example wala si Rizal?

Martyr or Traitor

The standard of living rely on its people who depends upon what they have learned from the past, the events of
the past that has a connection with the creation of the present time that is a foundation of the future.

The Philippine revolution became the bridge through the freedom of our country; it governed the people to the
achievement of Philippine Independence. By the revolution, people were united and were pursued to fight for freedom,
but the acknowledgement is only given to its leaders as they turn to be the principal hero of their people. It is very
confusing how Dr. Jose Rizal became our national hero despite of his refusal to unite with the national revolution. Rizal
opened the eyes of his fellow men with his novels and by awakening Filipino consciousness; many people were pursued
to be a part of the revolution and are willing to sacrifice even their lives just to achieve freedom from the abusive and
brutal Spaniards, but instead of supporting Bonifacio (father of Revolution) and his people, he became as the greatest
barrier and threat when he tried to hinder in the movement against the Spaniards since he believe that it is impossible
for the Filipinos to win.

Rizal is definitely a traitor for betraying his people who struggled a lot just to attain freedom, if he succeeded to
stop the revolt, there would be no such thing as we called the Philippine Revolution which is the beginning of the
people’s way to gain independence that we are enjoying until now. He became heroic trough his writings, but he never
put his words into action, he did not have the courage, he was afraid and do not believe in the capability of his people,
he always wanted to protect his name, his name that brought him to enjoy the luxurious living being an illustrado (a
person who belong in the middle structure of Spanish government before), and even studying and living in abroad, that
an ordinary Filipino during that time would never afford. He is mainly a representation of a person who came from
means and of great privilege who yet spend 35 years visiting affluent countries, while the native Filipinos called Indos
(lowest structure of Spanish government) suffer in the hands of the cruel Spaniards.

Until the present time, the name Jose Rizal is venerated by people with his monuments all over the country, his
image in one peso coin and even celebrated December 30 as a day to commemorate him, being the most popular hero
and known martyr of this country then overlaps by his towering statues the revolution. His life is mandated to be studied
by students’ even children in elementary as a part of their knowledge in their growth as required by law. The country’s
educators were the primary culprits of this belief, they wanted to indoctrinate the students the traits, values, attitude
and everything Rizal was, they push them to bow in his altar and make them believe on his exaggerated perfections at
the same time over-shadowing his errors and misconducts.

Considering Rizal as the national hero means level the heroes of our country and making Rizal as supreme, the
top most acknowledged hero and the one with the greatest authority. As people focus on Rizal, other hero is
disregarded and is not appreciated. The taught us the manner of ranking the dead heroes of our history from the
greatest to the least appreciated ones, the practice taught by the Americans and still live out in this day and age,
competition among individual to be considered as the best, aim for power, discrimination and inequality. The other
criteria given by the Americans to choose Rizal as our national hero now seems to be just an alibi to cover up their main
purpose, for the Filipinos’ to inherit the legacy of Rizal, a person who never advocated independence, who would not
build up rebellion against the government and only seeks for justice still under the rule of the colonizers unlike other
disapproved heroes like Bonifacio who wanted sovereignty. The Americans somehow became unfaithful as they betray
us when they made Filipinos trust their purpose of promoting prosperity in our country which later turned into
bitterness revealing its real goal to just colonize and attain benefits from us

In the present time, is seen that we still acquire the American culture, we learn to be so much attached with
them that instead of nurturing our own culture we have grown depending on their refinement and considered them as
the most powerful nation. The American sponsored hero Jose Rizal has a common purpose as that of that sponsoring
country which is to influence our country with European nations: life and culture, languages and customs, industries and
business and laws. (Jose Rizal, Martyr and National Hero pp.39)

Rizal taught us to accept as a fact that without them (colonizers) it is absolutely impossible for us to reach the
success of life, we adopted other nation’s ways of living and brought us to the world where the honor is within them and
made us bury own pride and civilization. Comparable with the Spaniards, they trained us to accustom their language
which must be learned and put aside. Nowadays, this malpractice is still applied in the Philippines, with the knowledge
that if an individual could not speak or understand English language (international language), that person can be
considered as of low profile and an uneducated one. Although speaking English is a way to communicate and be
understood by foreigners its bad effects to our society has been a real great damage to promote nationalism.

The failure of Rizal is that he sought us to inherit foreign country’s culture; he wanted us to be invaded by them
and rely on them. If he did not suffer a dramatic death in Dapitan, what act could have emphasized his worth? A great
change would probably be encounter. Even without him freedom of our country could still be attained through the joint
force of our heroes of the past that has long been unnoticed as of the supremacy of Rizal.

From the evidences shown, it is proven how our national hero emphasized the way of being an internationalist.
The foremost source of problems here in our country is mostly made by those people who still reckon in the application
of history as an effective way of improving life.

How about promoting change and formulating new techniques to improve living? People agreed with the desire
of the foreign countries to colonize us and control our government and economy with their potentialities of
development together with the influential power of our national hero that dictates us, we tend to follow rather than
trying to develop our country through our own capabilities and method.

The proper understanding of the history has something to do with our present time; the goal should probably be
for the welfare of the people. Rizal’s life is mainly accustomed with Spanish traits and culture, the system of his family as
they adopt the way they dress and make living, so far from the life of the native Filipinos’.

People are dependent with the colonizers in the past as well as it is today, we must strive for independence
because it’s also a way of promoting sense of nationalism which is somehow missing in the hearts and minds of our
generation. The understanding of unity among nations as a key to unity and successful living becomes a misconception
of Filipinos as they become so abusive dependent to it. Rizal advocated equality because he wanted his people to be just
like what the Spaniards are, he looked at his people just like how Spaniards look into our fellow men, so down and
debilitated, pointing out discrimination to Filipinos and praise to the Spaniards.

China is now on its peak of being like the Spaniards of yesterday who wanted to colonize us, strenuously and
with great speed of business expansionism throughout the Philippines and even yearning to own some portion of our
land. If we apply in this instances the ways Rizal did in the past, would it lead to positive or negative results? Would we
allow the colonizers to lead and slave our people for the reason that they know more, has the greater capability to
provide means for economic growth for they are richer or should we just strive from our own effort?
Today people of our country especially the youth has already the capability to speak and express their
sentiments , our fellow men turn out to be victorious in throughout the world, a great slap on the face of the colonizers
of the past who discriminates us. Now, we stand out like what the revolution and the Katipunan intended, to show the
world the Filipino consciousness, confidence, braveness, intelligence, power and independence, a change has been
made and difference in life was greatly observed. How much more if Filipinos build unity to promote change for
betterment of life?

To promote a sense of Nationalism, we must stand with our own effort, learn to nourish what we have, nurture
our land with unity of people and not depending on others, most of all, to start the change and advancement of
ourselves for a prosperous life.

ugali ng isang sa tapang ay salat it is the habit of he who is devoid of courage

na kahit sa bibig tayo’y ginugulat. to frighten us—even with his mouth.

At huwag matakot sa pakikibaka, And don’t be afraid to fight

sa lahing berdugo na lahing Espanya, the race of executioners, the Spanish race,

nangangarito na para manggagaga they are here in order to usurp,

ang ating sariling ibig pang makuha. (they want to get what is ours.)

Cleansing revolution

In the same vein, Bonifacio’s prose works such as “Dapat Mabatid ng mga Tagalog” serve as a declaration of
distrust and repudiation of Spain’s failure to abide by its promises to bring justice and prosperity to the Philippines,
justifying a revolution to cleanse societal evil:

“Itinuturo ng katwiran, na wala tayong iba pang maaantay kundi lalut lalung kahirapan, lalut lalung kataksilan,
lalut lalung kaalipustaan at lalut lalung kaalipinan.
(Reason
tells us that we cannot expect anything but more sufferings, more treachery, more insults and more slavery. Reason tells
us not to waste time hoping for the promised prosperity that will never come and materialize. Reason tells us to be
united in sentiment, thought and purpose in order to have the strength to combat the prevailing evils in our country.)”

Catalyst for nationalism

Proficiently written in the vernacular, Bonifacio’s literary works served as a catalyst for the nationalist awakening
through the Katipunan, spurring on the Filipino’s political development and popularizing Tagalog poetry during the late
19th century.

True enough, though little known are the physical traits and features of Bonifacio, a virtual persona of bravery
and patriotism arises from his surviving literary works.

A deeper investigation is necessary to uncover the elusive Bonifacio. Another interesting area of inquiry is the
formation of his character through his choice of books to augment his thirst for knowledge.

The well-dressed and well-protected and nurtured Jose Rizal studied in Letran, the exclusive school in Manila
where the sons and daughters of high military and civil officials, hacienderos and encomienderos were sent to be well-
cultured and well-bred. He studied in the elite Catholic institution in Ateneo, where the Jesuits taught him philosophy,
politics, psychology, geography and many other fields in humanities, sciences and arts. He studied in UST and became a
doctor and a surgeon.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

Bonifacio was taught the basics writing, reading and arithmetic by his maternal aunt. He was too poor to afford
formal education but on his own, he was a well-read young man.

Rizal traveled to Spain, Germany, France, Italy and England. He became a well-traveled gentleman.

Bonifacio was an ill-clad obrero who never got out of what is now Metro Manila and southern Tagalog.

Rizal was all oratory, poetry, painting, fencing and writing, talking and thinking.

Bonifacio was all action, without much discernment and planning. He walked from Tondo to Cavite and travelled
the jungles of Montalban and Ternate, Cavite.

Rizal was always riding a calesa or on a horse from Calamba to Binondo or Intramuros. Rizal was well-dressed
like a gentleman from Europe complete with coat and tie and a European hat that gave him an urbane and metropolitan.

Bonifacio was wearing old camisa chino, stained and soiled from toil and hard manual labor.

Rizal was the perfect picture of an elitist son of the upper class.

Bonifacio was the peasant boy who had to struggle to survive.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

If Rizal had the Bonifacio’s passion for action, and had Bonifacio been gifted with the wisdom of Rizal, and if the
two had lived a hundred years before 1898, we would not have been oppressed by Spain for 377 years.

“Bonifacio’s story is more reflective of the painful struggles of our people.”

“Bonifacio himself confessed that he was inspired to do what he did by the writings of Rizal because Bonifacio
had passion for action.”
“I am for Bonifacio. Rizal was a noble man, but a product of circumstance. He had good education and was
behooved to be a leader. Bonifacio was a great man. His patriotism is the patriotism of the masses. He was great in spite
of his circumstances.”

“Rizal wrote,and Bonifacio fought.

Rizal thought and talked, and Bonifacio listened and acted. Rizal wanted change thru peaceful means, Bonifacio
believed change was possible only through war. And it was through war that the Spanish gave up.

Bonifacio should be our hero, and Rizal may be credited for helping.”

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

“I think the national hero should be Bonifacio since he represents the Filipino masses who are oppressed and he
embodies the true filipino character of courage. Rizal was an aristocrat and was chosen by the Americans as our national
hero so we would also emulate his timid ways of objecting to foreign rule.”- ret. Col. Yusof Jimlani, City Demolition Unit
and Task Force Drainage chief

“.................but in terms of taking action, guts and intense love of country, I give huge credit to Bonifacio. In
short, they are incomparable as they are leaders with different styles and ideas. And one cannot be lesser than the
other.” – Davao City Councilor Leo Avila III

“(Both of them are great heroes.) But in my opinion, it should be Andres Bonifacio. A proletariat hero, true
revolutionary. He was one of the founders of Katipunan, aspiring for national liberation from the chains of slavery and
colonialism of Spain. None the less, Jose Rizal is duly recognized for his patriotism, his skills in writing was a major
contribution on d Philippine history. But he was more inclined to reformism.”

“It’s Bonifacio. He risked his life by leading the katipuneros in arm struggle versus the Spaniards.”

“– Andres Bonifacio. He wanted total freedom and independence for the Filipinos.”

“Andres Bonifacio. He was a very brave man and fought first hand for his country. Matapang na tao hindi
natakbo…”

“Andres Bonifacio. He fought the Spaniards first hand. The impact of what Jose Rizal did was greater, but it was
all in the background during the time.”

“According to my boyfriend, Jose Rizal was chosen by the Americans to be our National hero because he is what
they (the americans) want us, the Filipinos to be. Well traveled, educated, intelligent, linguistic, etc....

On the other hand, Andres Bonifacio was poor and had no proper schooling.

But I think Bonifacio fought for our freedom. He wanted the Philippines to stand on its own while Rizal wanted
us to be considered a province of spain..not a colony of spain.”

“The katipunan had more than enough brains to start a revolution even without rizal. there were so many good
works by people like burgos long before the noli/fili. and bonifacio WAS EDUCATED though not with an advanced
degree. he worked as a clerk meaning he was lettered. a grade-six education then was far more significant than it is
now.”

“.......Bonifacio, on the other hand is a true patriot, a TRAGIC hero if I may say so. Even in modern times, I
honestly believe Filipinos still lack respect for the man who wanted a "Philippines for Filipinos". He laid his life because
he is uncompromising.”

Con's of Propaganda:

 objectives include to break free from the colonization from spain

 threefold objectives: political moral and civic
 showed culture of sanduguan or blood compact as a sign of unity and no prejudice despite of variation in status
unlike propaganda movement
 kalayaan was their official publication "which put yokohama as masthead to fool spaniards" one article by
jacinto scrutinized cruelties done by spanish priest and civil guards of san francisco del monte on a helpless
village lieutenant but was able to produce only one issue
 such articles served as wake up call for revolution including jacinto's manifesto and boni's pag ibig sa tinubuang
lupa
 by the end of march 1896 over 2000 copies of kalayaan newspaper were in printed and it influenced central
luzon and other provinces
 originally there are only 300 members of KKK but after the imprintment of kalayaan, it became 30k
 kartilya ng katipunan written by jacinto showed the importance of right and light or katwiran at kaliwanagan
 art.8 in kartilya states "ipagtanggol mo ang naaapi, kabakahin ang umaapi" but propaganda is not doing it. mas
 they granted freedom from Spaniards
 first ph republic est.
 katipunan gave importance to women
 andres boni was also a member of la liga filipina but he soon lose hope in gaining reforms through peaceful
means. and when rizal was exiled in dapitan, his patriotic spirit heightened that is why he thinks that gaining
independence was only through revolution
