Competencies

Science, Year 4: Radio communications

• Describe how radio signals are generated, transmitted and received
• Explain how radio communication devices (e.g. Cellphones, radio/TV
receivers) work
• Discuss how LASER and fiber optics had improved telecommunication
Science, Year 4: Electromagnetic waves and communication
• Explain how electromagnetic waves are produced
• Discuss the different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, their
properties and uses

Objectives

• Explain how Electromagnetic Waves are produced.

• Discuss the properties and uses of the different regions in the
Electromagnetic Spectrum.
• Discuss how radio signals are transmitted and received.

Essential Concepts

• Transverse wave is a wave that moves perpendicular to the medium.

• Electromagnetic Spectrum is the continuous range or frequencies.
• Radio wave is the longest wave in the spectrum.
• Microwaves have shorter wavelengths than radiowaves.
• Infrared waves have both long and short wavelengths.
• Visible light waves are the only waves we can see. We can see them as
colors of the rainbow.
• Ultraviolet light has shorter wavelengths than visible light.
• X-rays are so powerful that they can easily pass through the skin.
• Gamma ray is the highest frequency and most energetic region of the
electromagnetic Spectrum.
• Radio is the transmission and reception of Electromagnetic radiation in
the radio frequency range.
• For the propagation and interception of radio waves, a transmitter and
receiver are employed.

Organizational Strategies

• Grouping of students
