Research Experience
1. Assistant Professor, School of Mechanical, Materials and Energy Engineering, Indian Institute of
Technology Ropar, India, Jan 2011 – Present:
• Proposed studies involving investigation of tool surface texturing effects, and tool design effects, under
environmentally-friendly, dry and near-dry machining conditions (institutional seed grant).
• Prepared groundwork for establishing research programs in the areas of sustainable design and
manufacturing, and manufacturing process tribology.
2. Postdoctoral Researcher, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Center for Manufacturing,
University of Kentucky, USA, Jan 2008 – Dec 2010:
• Independently proposed and conducted studies into development of environmentally-friendly, dry, near-
dry and cryogenic machining methods for sustainable manufacturing, including investigations of tool
surface topographical effects in dry and lubricated, continuous and intermittent machining. Development
of contact and wear models based on these studies, as well as development of computational models of
thermo-mechanical effects in the machining zone, is currently in progress.
• Collaborated with other researchers on several topics in sustainable manufacturing, including: (i) friction
stir processing of light-weight alloys to produce ultrafine grained materials for improved formability and
enhanced performance, (ii) machining of shape-memory alloys and biomedical implant materials for
improved surface integrity and product life, (iii) cryogenic machining and burnishing to produce ultrafine
grained materials for enhanced product performance and life, (iv) finite element modeling of surface
integrity in dry and cryogenic hard machining of AISI 52100 bearing steel, and (v) development,
prioritization and analysis of comprehensive sustainability metrics for evaluation and design of products,
processes and systems.
• Coordinated and supervised work on several industry-supported research projects, including: (i)
improvement of surface integrity in machining of porous tungsten cathode emitters for a major
manufacturer of dispenser cathodes for defense applications, (ii) multi-objective optimization of deep-
grooving operation in Inconel 718 superalloy for a major global cutting tool manufacturer, and (iii)
cryogenic and near-dry drilling of deep, small-diameter holes in Ti-6Al-4V for a major international
cutting tool manufacturer.
• Contributed to work on several NSF, NIST and DoD-supported research projects, including: (i)
investigation and modeling of topological effects under the severe plastic deformation conditions
encountered in machining, (ii) development of metrics and ontology for sustainable manufacturing, and
(iii) development of next generation manufacturing technology initiative (model-based enterprise tools).
• Assisted in writing proposals for research funding, as well as project status reports and final reports.

• Managed operation of machining research facility, and mentored several doctoral and masters students in
the research group.
3. Postdoctoral Research Scientist, ME Department, University of Utah, USA, Sep 2006 – May 2007:
• Independently proposed and conducted studies related to sustainable dry and minimal quantity of lubricant
(MQL) machining methods, and investigation of fundamental friction and thermal effects in metal cutting.
• Assisted in writing proposals for research funding and secured in-kind support for research projects from
industry. Also managed operation of machining research laboratory and mentored junior members of
research group.
4. Research Assistant (Doctoral), ME Department, University of Utah, USA, Aug 2001 – Jun 2006:
• Conducted studies in environmentally conscious machining – specifically, the tribological, thermal, and
occupational-exposure effects of different cutting fluid application methods.
• Developed numerical models for transient heat transfer, and utilized these to solve inverse heat transfer
problems in machining using hybrid gradient-based and evolutionary-search methods.
• Assisted in writing proposals for research funding, one of which was selected for a three-year grant from
the NSF, while another was approved for the use of facilities at a major US national lab. Secured in-kind
support for research projects from interested parties in industry.
• Managed operation of machining research laboratory, including: equipment maintenance, test set-up
development, fixture design and fabrication, experiment planning and execution, and supervising junior
researchers.
• Assisted other researchers in conducting machining experiments on various automotive, bearing, and
aerospace alloys, developing computational models for simulating machining, and designing devices for
controlled multi-fluid application in metal cutting.
5. Graduate Assistant (Masters), ME Department, University of Utah, USA, Aug 1998 – Jan 1999:
Developed algorithms and programs to generate non-standard, pseudo-random deposition tool paths for
Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). The procedure yielded parts with improved mechanical properties (8
% increase in density), thus helping to extend the capability of rapid prototyping processes from being pure
design-aid/visualization tools to production of functional components.

Teaching Experience
1. Course Instructor, Manufacturing with Metallic Materials (MEL 202), IIT Ropar, India, Aug – Nov
2011:
Introduced third year engineering students (class size: approx. 30) to the basic principles of manufacturing
processes related to components made of metal-based materials. Developed course plan with emphasis on
material behavior and its relationship with design and manufacturing activities.

2. Course Instructor, Manufacturing with Non-metallic Materials (MEL 203), IIT Ropar, India, Jan – Apr
2011, 2012:
Introduced third year engineering students (class size: approx. 30) to the basic principles of manufacturing
processes related to components made of polymers, composites, ceramics and semiconductor materials.

3. Assistance in Modeling of Manufacturing Processes and Machines (ME/MFS 505), Design for

University of Kentucky, USA, Jan 2008 – Dec 2010:
Assisted in lab sessions, guided student teams through all stages of course projects, and delivered lectures
when instructor was not available.
4. Course Instructor, Concurrent Engineering I (ME EN 2000), University of Utah, USA, Jan – May 2005:
Lectured sophomore/junior students (class size: 51) on the principles of concurrent engineering and basic
manufacturing technology. Developed curriculum with emphasis on material behavior, statistical quality
control, metrology, and design implications for manufacturing. Supervised coordination between
classroom and lab (machine shop) with the aid of two teaching assistants. Advised student teams working
on their course projects. Collaborated with members at the Center for Engineering Leadership (CLEAR) as
part of department-wide initiative to strengthen exposure of engineering students to effective written and
oral communication techniques.
5. Teaching Assistant for Concurrent Engineering I (ME EN 2000), University of Utah, USA, Jan 1999 –
May 2000, Sep – Dec 2002, and Sep – Dec 2004:
Assisted in lab sessions in the machine shop and helped students to learn the basics of workshop practice
(metrology, lathes, mills, CNC, sand casting, injection molding, vacuum thermoforming, and sheet
metalworking). Graded lab assignments and exams, and assisted students with questions during office
hours. Delivered lectures when instructor was not available.

Other Experience
1. Editorial Assistant, Machining Science and Technology, Lexington, KY, USA, Jan 2008 – Jul 2011:
Coordinated all stages of review for submitted manuscripts and maintained correspondence with authors,
editors, reviewers and publishers. Performed technical proofreading for all articles, and acted as a reviewer
for several manuscripts. Coordinated the successful transition of the journal from a paper and email based
manuscript submission system to a fully online system for article submission, peer-review and publishing.
2. Patent Analyst, Intellevate (India) Pvt. Ltd., Noida, UP, India, Oct – Dec 2007:
Conducted detailed prior art searches to establish the patentability of invention disclosures filed by various
global clients. Assisted in standardizing the procedure for systematic searching of large databases,
documenting results, and filing reports.

Learned about the manufacture of air Go/No-Go dimensional inspection gauges, and assisted in general
shop-floor supervision.
