Please type your answers to each of the questions below, using complete sentences written in your own

words. You can copy the question and then answer in complete sentences, or you can include the
question in your answer (for example, "The network number of address... with subnet mask ... is...").
Either method is fine, but I should be able to read your homework document and tell exactly what the
question was.

1. What is the network number of address 165.34.45.14 with a subnet mask of 255.255.240.0?

The network number of address 165.34.45.14 with a subnet mask of 255.255.240.0 is 165.34.45.0, Class
C.

2. What is the network number of address 10.30.45.22 with a subnet mask of 255.224.0.0?

The network number of address 10.30.45.22 with a subnet mask of 255.224.0.0 is 10.0.0.0, Class A.

3. What is the host address of 126.42.13.99 with a 255.255.0.0 subnet mask?

8. What subnet mask is equivalent to /12?

Subnet mask equivalent for /12 is 255.240.0.0

9. What are the first and last useable Class A addresses? (By "useable," I mean an address that can
actually be assigned to a device.)

the first and last useable Class A addresses are 1.0.0.1 and 126.255.255.254

10. What are the first and last useable Class B addresses?

12. What's special about the 127.0.0.0/8 series of addresses?

What's special about the 127.0.0.0/8 series of addresses is that 127.*.*.* are reserved for the loopback
or localhost.

13. Microsoft uses a set of addresses for APIPA in the event a DHCP server cannot be found. What is
APIPA (don't tell me what it stands for, I want to know what it is), and what is the address range?

The APIPA is a automatic private ip addressing system used by Microsoft and can also be used on MAC
OS. When a client cant find a DHCP server or the DHCP server is nonexistent or temporarily out of
service, the client randomly selects a class B ip address from the range of 169.254.0.0 to
169.254.255.255 and assigns that IPv4 address to itself. If the MAC address that corresponds with the
selected IPv4 address by the client turns out to be occupied- when the client sends an ARP packet for
retrieval of the MAC address- then the client randomly selects another IP address and tries again until it
is successful.

14. There are groups of IP addresses originally set aside for private addressing (for networks that were
not connected to the Internet). Nowadays, those addresses are used primarily by NAT services. What
are those ranges of addresses? For a really dry read, feel free to check out RFC1918 at
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1918.

The groups of IP addresses originally set aside for private addressing are 10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255,
172.16.0.0-172.31.255.255, and 192.168.0.0-192.168.255.255.
