CO2/Adsorption
Submission Date: 29 November 2019

(b) The following laboratory data were collected in a batch adsorption study. Plot the data
according to Freundlich Isotherm and determine the values for the constants n and K. A
volume of 500 mL is placed in each flask, and the waste has an initial chemical oxygen
demand (COD) of 100 mg/L.

No (mg) (mL) (mg/L)
1 965 500 3.5
2 740 500 5.2
3 548 500 8.0
4 398 500 12.5

(c) A waste stream of n-butanol vapor in air from a process was adsorbed by activated carbon
particles in a packed bed having a diameter of 5 cm and length of 15 cm containing 79.2 g
of carbon. The inlet gas stream having a concentration, Co of 600 ppm entered the bed at
the solute feed rate, FA of 0.063 g/cm2.s. Data in Table 5.1 give the concentrations of the
fluid in the bed, C. The break point concentration is set at C/Co = 0.01. Estimate the
breakthrough point, the fraction of total capacity used up to the break point, and the length
of the unused bed.
