Approach

Medium Intensity
Omnidirectional
Elevated Light
A.02.160e

Compliance with Standards

ICAO: In compliance with Annex 14 for use in simple
approach lighting configurations.

Uses

- ICAO, simple approach lighting

- Red tee
- Medium intensity approach lighting combined with
high intensity approach lighting (example, see
leaflet A.02.120).

Medium Intensity Lightning systems

For airports not equipped with a non-visual precision

ABI-H FIG. 1
approach system such as ILS, MLS, PAR,..., a medium or
low intensity airfield lighting system is necessary to ensure
the final approach and landing guidance from that point in
the airport area where the beacon has brought the aircraft.
Direct straight-in approach is expected to be operative
under reduced visibility conditions and requires a medium
intensity approach lighting having a light intensity in excess
of 1000 cd. Indirect circling approach requires omnidirectio-
nal lights having a lower light intensity. Please refer to cata-
logue leaflet A.01.420 giving a general idea of the equip-
ment required to achieve a complete medium intensity
lighting system. For approach, select the most appropriate
lamp rating and glassware among the choice given in this
leaflet for the ABI-H or in leaflet A.02.150 for the OP200-H
lighting fixture.

Features FIG. 2

· Simple and sturdy construction

· No need for optical adiustment, thanks to the prefocus
halogen lamp.
· Versatility in performances, thanks to the choice of lamp
wattage and colour of dome.
· Easy relamping.
The dome cover assembly is removed by releasing a single
thumbscrew. Light fully weatherproof.
· Mounts on standard conduit or breakable coupling.
Thus can be installed at ground level, on conduit extension
or on safety approach mast SM/A. Easily installed on top
of a high intensity light (see leaflet A.02.120) or on
1-inch dia. conduit.
Construction
1 Prismatic glass dome, clear or red through coloured
2. Prefocus halogen lamp
3. Lampholder with bracket and columns
4. Polychloroprene gasket
5. Upper body
6. Cable stress reliever
7. Lower body
8. Levelling system
9. Slip fitter
10. Breakable coupling (optional)
11. 2-core cable assembly with factory moulded 2-pole
plus FAA L-823 (optional).

Finish

Phosphating and baked polyester electrostatic powder

coating. FIG. 3
Colour: aviation yellow
Stainless steel hardware.

Electrical Supply

6,6A, through an isolating transformer (see catalogue leaflet

A.06.110 suitably rated to cope with lamp wattage and
secondary cable losses. Use a 2-core 2,5 sqmm or AWG
12 cable between the light and the transformer.
The FAA L-823 2-pole plug is either factory moulded on the
cable or a type 91 E 6 connector kit (see catalogue leaflet
A.06.210) is used on site.

Notes:
1. For red light, multiply above figures by 0,15. (This value can vary depen-
ding on the density of the glass pressing)
2. Due to the filament shape, the intensity figures vary over the 360° horizon-
tal beam angle. Figures given are maxima.
Installation

- At ground level, with a breakable coupling (fig. 5).

- On a 60mm O.D. Aluminium conduit (up to 1,8m high)
with a breakable coupling at the base.(fig. 6)
- On a safety approach mast type SM/A (see leaflet
A.05.310) (fig. 7).
- Superimposed on a high intensity unidirectional approach
light, e.g. type P500 (fig. 8).
Precise levelling of the light is easily achieved with a dedi -
cated instrument available on request.

Suggested Specification
The Approach, Medium lntensity,
Omnidirectional Elevated Light shall be
in compliance with Annex 14 for use in
a simple approach lighting system.
The prefocus halogen lamp shall be
150W - 6,6A or less and its rated life
at full intensity shall not be less than
500 hours. No adjustment shall be
required at relamping which shall not
require the use of any tool. The pris-
matic dome shall be through coloured
for the red light A polychloroprene gas-
ket shall ensure the watertightness
between the glass dome and the
body. The light design shall allow for
an easy levelling and for its installation
either on a breakable coupling, on
lightweight conduit or on a safety
approach mast. All components shall
be suitably protected against corrosion
and plain stainless steel hardware
shall be used throughout.
