Standardization

Standardization

Standardization
INTRODUCTION
• ISO is the acronym for the International Organization for Standardization,
which develops voluntary International Standards that provide state-of-the-art
specifications for products, services, and management systems in order to
break down barriers to international trade.

• It is comprised of members from the national standards bodies of 164

countries. It’s Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, coordinates the
system. The Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM) through STANDARDS
MALAYSIA is a full membership for International Organization for
Standardization (ISO).
DEFINATION
• International Standards make things work. They give world-class
specifications for products, services and systems, to ensure quality,
safety and efficiency. They are instrumental in facilitating
international trade.

• ISO has published 22547 International Standards and related

documents, covering almost every industry, from technology, to
food safety, to agriculture and healthcare. ISO International
Standards impact everyone, everywhere.
OBJECTIVE
• Response to Needs : to respond to the requirements of the marketplace. The
organization develops standards in response to requests from groups who express a need for help
with their activities. This means that, when you order a copy of an ISO standard, it addresses specific
business needs directly rather than using a theoretical approach. The quality standards, for example,
contain detailed guidelines that allow you to improve the quality of your operations and the
products you design and manufacture.

• Expert-Based : The ISO technical committees are responsible for developing its
standards. These committees are made up of experts from all over the world, and the ISO objective
is to distill expert knowledge into standards that you can apply in any country. When you implement
an ISO standard, you can be confident that the guidelines represent current expertise. Based on the
advice of these experts, the standards define the terms used and the scope of application to
facilitate your implementation. To help you further, the ISO publishes examples of successful
implementations such as for the standards on energy efficiency and renewable energy.
CONT;
• Involve Stakeholders : to develop its standards with the involvement of all interested
parties. In addition to the more than 250 technical committees, consumer groups, industry
representatives and NGOs can have input. With a broad base contributing concerns, your implementation
of an ISO standard is unlikely to run into strong opposition in your own company or locality. ISO
standards are designed to guide technical and organizational implementations in a non-controversial
manner. This orientation allows you to propose adhering to ISO standards in your company without
major controversy.

• Consensus : The ISO not only welcomes input from all stakeholders but allows such input to
influence the standards within their objective of developing guidelines based on consensus. This
consensus-based approach promotes widespread acceptance and implementation of ISO standards. When
you order and start implementing a standard, such as one on risk management, you can be sure that
other companies are using it successfully and, if problems were found, they have been resolved within the
consensual model. If you hire a consultant to help with implementation, he usually will be able to give you
examples of companies similar to yours in which the ISO standard is already in place.
BENEFITS
• All your processes are evaluated, standardized and explained to personnel
• Training new employees is much easier
• Problems are detected more quickly and solutions are improved
• Improved customer satisfaction
• Better understanding of customer needs
• Better perception of your company
• Suppliers become more like partners
• Overall communication is improved
• Better knowledge of your company by employees
• Improved participation of employees
CONT;
• Internally, it helps you define clear objectives and obliges you to review them. It
also improves communication by defining your processes and helps to reduce
nonconforming products.
• Reducing nonconformities sometimes frees up capacity. ISO helps to reduce
inventory through better communication and follow-up with suppliers. It also
helps you address the causes of existing or potential problems through
corrective and preventive actions.
• Overall, ISO improves task definition (who does what), motivates your
employees to improve the system and mobilizes them around objectives.

• Member bodies are national bodies considered the most representative standards body in each
country. These are the only members of ISO that have voting rights.
• Correspondent members are countries that do not have their own standards organization. These
members are informed about ISO's work, but do not participate in standards promulgation.
• Subscriber members are countries with small economies. They pay reduced membership fees, but
can follow the development of standards.
