1.0 Holding capacity

Almost all regulations require a holding capacity of 110% of the largest tank within the bund or 25% of the
total capacity of all the tanks within the bund, whichever is the greatest. In addition, further guidelines in
some countries (e.g. the UK) recommend additional measures such as providing sufficient "freeboard" or
height of wall above the maximum holding capacity to accommodate dynamic factors such as a surge in
situations of major tank failure or storm-driven waves in larger bunds. As a rule (and unless specific local
laws prevail) most operators work to the 25%/110% capacity guide.

Table 1: Tank Geometric Data

2 24 22 9957
3 20 19 5971
4 24 23 10409
5 20 19 5971
Total: 42 265

Tank 2 Area 1214. 33 139.44
Tank 3 Area 1000. 36 124.02

Average volume within bunded areas = 1091.4 x1.7 x 5 = 9276.9 cu. m

Maximum tank diameter, d = 24m
Maximum tank height, h = 22m
Maximum volume of product within one bunded area
= πd2h/4 = (22/7 x 242 x 23)/4 =10410m3
Total volume of product in tanks =
= πd2h/4 = (22/7 x 242 x 23)/4 =10410m3

Maximum volume of product required to be contained= Max (1.1 x 10 410 , 0.25x42265)

Max (11541,10566) =11451cu. m
Additional volume required within bunded area =11451-9276.9 = 2174.1m3
Additional height to obtain volume required within bunded area
= 2174.1/ (1091.4 x 5) = 0.398m = 398mm
Allow a freeboard of 200mm
Additional wall height = 398+200 = 598mm, say 600mm

3.0 Recommendation
1. New pavement on the bunded area would reduce the height by 500mm
About 400mm of the top of the bund wall was not reinforced, hence it would have to be added also
Recommended height of wall to be added = 600+500+400 =1500mm
2. Increasing the height of the bund wall will introduce additional load to the bund wall foundation.
Hence there is need to consider the effect of the new load on the foundation and if necessary, design a
new foundation to strengthen the existing one.
3. Preliminary structural analysis shows that the bund wall needs to be redesigned for strength and
stability. This would not necessarily involve destroying the existing bund wall, but the existing members
can be strengthened structurally by concrete sleeving and creating a new foundation on the new design
level of the site on the assumption that the existing foundation never existed.
