Activity: A city Science High School uses standardized IQ test to screen students for admission. It is
known that the population standard deviation of these IQ scores is 15. The school principal claimed that
the average IQ of the students in their school is 110. Miss Cruz, a researcher, wants to validate the claim.
She selected random sample of 50 students and administer the IQ test. She found that the mean IQ of
the sample is 105. Does this sample data provide sufficient evidence to reject the school principal’s
claim? Perform a test of hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance.
Data: x̄ = 105 μ = 110 σ = 15 n = 50

Test Statistics: Z-test

Computations:

x́−μ
z=
Formula: σ
√n

105−110
z= ¿
15

z=−2 .36

(Get the absolute value of Z) /-2.36/ = 2.36

Computed Value (CV) of Z = 2.36

at 0.05 level of significance and degree of freedom = n – 1 = (150 – 1) = 149

Tabled Value (TV) of Z = 1.96

Findings: Computed Value of Z (2.55) is greater than the Tabled Value of Z (1.96)

CV(2.36) > TV(1.96)

Decision: Reject Ho

Analysis: There is a significant difference between the IQ scores of the students in the school and actual
IQ scores of the random sample of 50 students

Conclusion: The performance of the random sample of 50 students IQ scores has not come up to the
expected scores
Activity: You wanted to compare at .05 level of significance the scores section A and Section B on their
Statistics results.
SES\IQ Section A Section B
x̄ 75 60
s 8 12
n 50 45

Computations:

Formula:

75−60
t=

√ +
50 45

t=7.09

Computed Value (CV) of t = 7.09

at 0.05 level of significance and degree of freedom = (n 1-1) + (n2-1)

= (50-1) + (45-1)
= 93
Tabled Value (TV) of t = 1.96

Findings: Computed Value of t (1.41) is less than the Tabled Value of t (1.96)
CV(7.09) > TV(1.96)

Decision: Reject Ho

Analysis: There are significant difference in the mean scores between section A and section B in their
Statistics results.

Conclusion: The statistics results of pupils in section A and B is not comparable.

Activity: A group of students were observed. You wanted to know if there is a relationship between
there SES and usage of the Social networks in the internet. The following are the gathered data:
SES\Internet usage Always Sometimes Never Total (RT)
High 30(18.35) 20(19.41) 10(20.24) 60
Middle 12(14.38) 15(15.21) 20(17.42) 47
Low 10(19.27) 20(20.38) 33(23.35) 63
Total (CT) 52 55 63 170(GT)

Computations: fo = Observed Frequency fe = Expected Frequency

2 ( fo−fe )2 ( RT )(CT )
Formula: x= fe=

X2 = 7.396 + .018 + 5.181 + 0.394 + .003 + .382 + 4.459 + .007 + 3.988

= 21.99

Computed Value (CV) of X2 = 21.99

at 0.05 level of significance and degree of freedom = (C-1) (R-1)

= (3-1) (3-1)
=4
2
Tabled Value (TV) of X = 9.488

Findings: Computed Value of X2 (21.99) is more than the Tabled Value of X 2 (9.488)

CV(0.72) > TV(9.488)

Decision: Reject Ho

Analysis: There is significant relationship between the SES and IQ of the 4 th year students.

Conclusion: There is no enough evidence to show that the SES of a group of students has a bearing on
their usage of the Social networks in the internet.
