FURNACE CHARGING TURN KEY PROJECTS

The charging plant installations are adapted in the configuration, the dimensions and the accessories
elements to the type of casting, to the furnace or to any existing requirement. URBAR always design
the whole project personalised in order to satisfy fully the needs in the installation, taking in account
the working conditions.

At URBAR, we are ready to listen to our customers to achieve the most satisfying design and
manufacturing. The scope of the supply can be pointed at the vibrating furnace charge car itself or on
the other side we can supply the turn key project for the complete furnace charge installation,
including all the required elements to do the job, as well the raw material as the additives.

The basic configuration for a furnace charge installation in the fusing platform can be made of
the following elements:

1. Furnace vibrating charge car

2. Automatic travelling crane.
3. Intermediate hoppers for charge preparing.
4. Automatic system for addition agents.
5. Automatic system for ladle correction.

The automation degree and the equipment to be supplied depend of course on the needs in the
furnace charge and the requisitions in the mixture to be obtained.

This means that before designing any furnace charge car it is necessary to know the
equipment to incorporate: additives hopper, weighing system, elevating platform, scrap lock gate,
motion…

FURNACE CHARGE CAR

The basic furnace charge car shape is elementally alike an electro mechanic vibrating conveyor,
driven by two electric external vibrators and installed on a movable char.

The trough is protected by a static reception hopper, supported on a frame specially designed.

The structure essential parts are made in mild steel.

The whole of the tray is installed on springs, to ensure the static part isolation to vibrations.

The tray final part, thus the outlet part, is interchangeable and shows a nose form. As this part has to go
into the furnace, it is made in AISI-310 refractory stainless steel.

The charge car trough and the reception hopper can be lined with a high resistant wear plate or even
with a “sandwich” made of plate-rubber-plate, in order to reduce the installation sound level.

The carriages allow longitudinal, cross motion or both. Char motion is assured by one or two gear
motors installed in the back or the front wheels. The resulting motion speed is about 20 m/min.

The URBAR chargers are always equipped with the gear motors connected to the mains through a
frequency changer. This way, the starting and the stop are progressive and the equipment life time is
longer.

Once the char is positioned at the furnace inlet, the material is discharged, in a short time, by turning
on the unbalanced motors, minimizing the heat losses.

The operating controls are usually placed in the charge frame (static part of the carriage) or in a close
structure, allowing to handle the vibrators and the char motion (backward and forward),
through a portable control of push buttons, even though the furnace chars can be eventually driven
through an electric static table command.

This operation can be also made from the furnace cabin, where the main command can be set, if
required.

The maxima dimensions for the vibrating tray in a furnace char are about a 6 meter length and a 2.5
meter width.

On the other hand, the reception upper hopper can be designed for the 20 m3 capacity.

The shapes for the trays, the hopper and all required elements that compose the furnace char can be
made following the needs in order to be adapted to the installation.

PROPORTIONING UNIT OVER MOVABLE WEIGHING CHARGE CAR

The mixing is automatically made with the additives dosing installation. The various ingredients
initially stored in hoppers and they are generally extracted by electromagnetic feeders.

The mixing can be made with a weighing char. The feeding can be manually controlled or through
totally automatic system.

Conveying the additives from the weighing zone to the furnace charge car(s) can also be automatically
made by a container lifted by the crane and positioned on the char.

MOULDS RECEPTION

At the line outlet, the sand cores reception is achieved through a vibrating conveyor
especially designed to avoid sand adherence, by heating its surface with electric resistances.

The vibrating conveyor is driven by two electric external vibrators and (if there are longer distances
up to the cooler drum) it feeds natural frequency conveyors, that can be designed with ascending
angles.

www.urbar.com 2008.08
Vibrating Machinery and
Installations for Casting

Natural frequency conveyors are especially apt for heavy-duty work, under very extreme conditions
such as abrasion, temperatures, shocks or high charges.

Castings at a very high temperature can be conveyed, for which purpose special troughs are built,
supported on the main frame by springs, which absorb the trough deformations, thus avoiding
damage to the main frame.

The troughs can have very rugged grizzlies, bottom collectors, as well as intermediate
discharge gates. One of the most usual operations is to transport red-hot castings and the sand
separation when conveying. Complete air-tightened, dust free installations are also
manufactured.

These conveyors are of rugged design, giving trouble-free service, even under the direst
conditions, furnishing high capacities and virtually maintenance free operation.

Their ruggedness enables them to transport heavy and large size materials.

The badly-palletised sand moulds can be recovered by a movable vibrating extractor, located
perpendicular or parallel to the line.

The movable extractor can be driven through a pneumatic cylinder or with two geared motors.

This extractor can be eventually equipped with bars in order to recover the sand.

COOLING AND SHAKE OUT

Sand scrap cores (usually in a single piece) are cooled in the rotary sand/casting
separator, the lumps are shacked out and the castings and the sand temperature decreases. Sand and
castings are separated and the sand is homogeneously extracted.

The pieces are extracted from the front part and the sand is extracted by the drum lower part, through a
perforated plate, to collect and treat it. The sand obtains the adequate conditions regarding moisture and
temperature to be used again.

The drum is designed to stand the impacts and the dilatations usually experimented while
functioning. he perforated plate is made in non-wasting steel to extend its life, as it has to handle
castings without sand, being thus the most exposed zone to tensions.

The beds are calculated, designed and made in order to stand the very high charges at which they will
be exposed. At the outlet of the drum, an adequate temperature is guaranteed in order to be able to
handle the castings, to de-gate them

The cooling of the pieces and the sand is made through water adding system and an air circulation

The water and the air flows are designed depending on the installation to be supplied. These are
extremely important elements, in order to realise an optimum cooling, as well as the stay in the inside
of the castings and the sand.

A water addition system is made of the following elements:

• A temperature sensor.
• A flow programmer.
• The electric, pneumatic and hydraulic elements.
• The tube itself with the nozzles for the water outlet.

In the outlet, the castings temperature is usually about 65 – 85 ºC, and the sand is extracted at about
40ºC

www.urbar.com 2008.08

When an additional cooling is required, a shake conveyor may be installed, allowing section to
act in a pulmonary manner. In spite of bearing considerable loads, of up to 25 tons, the unit can start
up again without any problem.

The castings to be handled are transported sliding and not by micro-projection (as in vibrating
conveyors). The castings therefore do not suffer damage which might otherwise be produced by
possible impacts.

The tray receives an alternative rectilinear movement of a pneumatic actuator. This makes it ascend
by means of the roller tracks with some soleplates, accumulating a potential energy. In the descent of
the tray, the aforementioned energy is transformed into kinetic energy, reaching the design
speed. The tray is braked by two stops. This impact causes a sliding of the material accumulated on
the tray.

The advance speed of the material can be regulated through the control of the magnitude of the
impact. Two detectors are in charge of controlling, automatically, the position of the tray, regulating
the speed. In this way some extremely slow advance speeds, above 1 m/min, can be obtained.

The electronic control of the machine makes it possible for the production to be transported to be
variable, maintaining a stable advance speed of material. The electronic pressure regulator
adjusts the work pressure to the needs of the conveyor.

DE-GATING

Conveying pieces may be released with natural frequency conveyors especially indicated for long
distances.

Natural frequency conveyors are especially apt for heavy-duty work, under very extreme
conditions such as abrasion, shock or high charges. These conveyors are of rugged design, giving
trouble-free service, even under the direst conditions, furnishing high capacities and virtually
maintenance free operation.

The trough is usually equipped with a special lining, in order to reduce the noise level.

SHOTBLAST FEEDING

Feeding to the shot blast is assured by means of a loader equipped with a stop system, part retaining,
feeding motion and weighing system.

Thus, the performance of the shot blast is perfectly controlled and dead times are minimized.

Finally, at the shot blast outlet, a vibrating conveyor leads the finished castings up to the
classification zone.

On the other hand, castings can be handled or taken from the process, through standard or two way
vibrating conveyors, to distribute the pieces to the handling zones.

SAND COOLER

The sand cooler is an essential element to obtain the perfect homogenisation of the sand, the
bentonite and the coal mixture. Then, in the injection machine, the percentage of quality
rejections is almost none, in the finished pieces.

Basically the aim is summed up in the following matters:

• Sand temperature reduction.
• Obtaining homogeneous sand moisture degree in the outlet.
• Separating the fines for their further recovering.
• Activating the bentonite incorporated in the sand.

There is at URBAR a cooling and drying installation to achieve the necessary tests.

In this sense, we can guarantee: the right process operation parameters election and the adequate
equipment dimensioning.
