This document is intended for use by persons involved in site planning for the installation of Elekta
oncology products.
1.2 Important safety information

Elekta products strictly adhere to a set of safety standards. All medical electrical equipment must be
correctly installed, operated and maintained, particularly with regard to human safety.
For the safety of patients and users, you must always obey all safety procedures. Refer to the safety
information in the related product documentation.

This is the convention for terms that you can find in this document.
Term Convention
Authorized Person A person who is given the authority to do the work on the
equipment by the authority that controls the equipment.
Qualified Person A person that is recognized by a competent authority to have the
necessary knowledge and training to do specified tasks.

Figure 1.1 gives the conventions that Elekta uses to refer to the directions of the digital accelerator
in the treatment room. The conventions are applicable only when the patient is in the head first
(anatomical supine) position on the treatment table.

Overview
2.1 Overview
This document gives the description of the Elekta oncology products available and the information
necessary to plan the site in which a system is to be installed.
2.2 Oncology clinic

The Elekta digital accelerator is installed in a dedicated area in the oncology clinic. Refer to the
Elekta Virtual Clinic at www.elekta.com.

Some of the equipment and facilities in Figure 2.2 are not always included.
Primary rooms
The primary rooms used by the digital accelerator system are the control room, treatment room and
the equipment room. Most of the equipment of the digital accelerator is in the equipment room.
Maze
The maze is a corridor between the control room and the treatment room. The shape of the maze
prevents radiation from getting to the control room.
Water cooler room

The water cooler is placed in a separate room.
Server room
For oncology systems with Agility and Integrity R3.0, it is possible to put the treatment control
system (TCS) in a different room. See Figure 2.6.
Other rooms
The treatment planning system (TPS) is put in a separate room.

Parts of the system
2.4 Parts of the system

Each system is made of many parts. Some of the major parts include:
• The digital accelerator, which delivers radiation
• iViewGT™, which images the position of the patient
• The XVI system, which makes 3-D reconstruction images of the patient
• The Precise Treatment Table, which is used to support the patient
• HexaPOD™ evo CouchTop, which can be attached to the Precise Treatment Table
• iGUIDE® tracking system, which can control the HexaPOD™ evo CouchTop
• Treatment control system, which controls the digital accelerator
• MOSAIQ®/SYNERGISTIQ™ oncology information system, which manages patient
records
• Treatment planning system, which is used to create patient treatment plans.
Digital accelerator
The digital accelerator makes X-ray beams of different shapes, which treat patients who have cancer.
An electron gun in the gantry arm makes a beam of electrons. The speed of the electron beam is
increased by a magnetic field, which also focuses the beam. The electron beam hits a target block
and makes an X-ray beam. The X-rays go through a filter and collimator and an X-ray beam of a
specified energy and shape comes out from a beam limiting device.
Treatment control system

The treatment control system (TCS) software is installed on a cabinet, which is found in the control
room or server room.
The control system of a digital accelerator connects with other same systems and with diagnostic
and simulation equipment. Information on how to connect these machines together in a network is
in Site Planning Computer Hardware, Software & Network Information.

Parts of the system
2.4.1 Treatment room

The treatment room contains the digital accelerator, which is the primary radiation source. The
safety systems prevent entry to the treatment room during the treatment of a patient.

The control room contains the oncology system computers and workstations.

For oncology systems with Agility™ and Integrity™ R3.0, the TCC can be installed in a server room.

2.4.4 Server room

The computers can be installed away from the workstation, in a different area of the control room.
This can reduce noise and heat at the workstation. The workstation keyboard, video and mouse
cables must be extended to reach the workstation. Refer to Site Planning Computer Hardware,
Software & Network Information.

For oncology systems with Agility™ and Integrity™ R3.0,the TCC can be installed in a server room up
to 30 m from the control room workstation and the equipment room reeling interface cabinet (RIC).

The water cooler room contains the water cooler. The water cooler provides cooled water for the
digital accelerator.

3.1 Treatment delivery system

The section gives information about the necessary and optional items for Elekta oncology products.
All the Elekta oncology systems have a digital accelerator with a BLD and Precise Treatment Table.
Table 3.1 gives a list of the BLDs and other items for each of the oncology systems.

Some of the oncology systems in Table 3.1 are not available in all regions. Contact your Elekta
representative for more information.
Many items, such as keyboards and monitors, are locally purchased items. These items are known as
procurement radiotherapy (PRT) items.
Elekta writes a specification for each PRT. Contact your Elekta representative for PRT information.

3.1.1 Precise Treatment System™

The Precise Treatment System™ is a digital accelerator which includes the MLCi2 or Beam
Modulator™ BLD.

3.2 Treatment control system

The treatment control system (TCS) is a part of all Elekta oncology systems.
The control system software is installed on a cabinet, which is found in the control room for most
installations.

3.2.3 MOSAIQ®/SYNERGISTIQ™
To have the MOSAIQ® computer within the TCC is optional. SYNERGISTIQ™ has a separate
computer. This is not part of the TCC.
MOSAIQ® controls the electronic medical records of the patient. The system uses a server to hold
patient data. A MOSAIQ®/SYNERGISTIQ™ computer connects the digital accelerator to the
MOSAIQ® server.

3.3.1 iViewGT™
The iViewGT™ system acquires X-ray images to refer and compare treatments.
iViewGT™ uses iCom to import patient information from the digital accelerator. iViewGT™ can
import and export and DICOM secondary capture type image files.
iViewGT™ is installed as standard on the Elekta Synergy® Platform, Elekta Synergy®, Elekta Infinity™,
and the Elekta Axesse™ systems.

An iViewGT™ remote viewing station (RVS) can be in a different room.

3.3.2 XVI
XVI reconstructs three-dimensional images and can reference them to computerized tomography
(CT) data.
XVI is installed as standard on the Elekta Synergy®, Elekta Infinity™, and the Elekta Axesse™ systems.

3.3.3 HexaPOD™ evo RT system

The HexaPOD™ evo RT System is a patient positioning system that has six axes of movement.
This tracking system has a camera that tracks the movement of the table top through fluorescent
markers on a reference frame. This is attached to the HexaPOD™ evo CouchTop.
The iGUIDE® system tracks the HexaPOD™ evo CouchTop and validates the patient position.
The HexaPOD™ evo RT System is standard with Elekta Axesse™.

3.3.4 Elekta IntelliMax™

Elekta IntelliMax™ is a suite of services for the remote support of Elekta products.
IntelliMax™ Connect is a software program for remote desktop sharing, text-based chat, and file
transfer. An IntelliMax Connect session connects two users at the same time through the internet.
They are referred to as:
• The hospital-based user: the user who operates the Elekta product in a hospital. They can
be a Clinical User or a Service User.
• Elekta IntelliMax™ support user: an Elekta approved user who can give support for one or
more Elekta products. They are not at the hospital.
IntelliMax Connect can only be run from the Elekta product. This is to make sure that the
hospital-based user is in front of the Elekta product during the session.
IntelliMax Agent is a software program that is installed on a dedicated computer in the medical
facility. IntelliMax Agent is the only access point for IntelliMax Connect sessions from supported
Elekta products out of the hospital network. IntelliMax Agent collects machine data from supported
Elekta products, which it sends to IntelliMax Enterprise on a secure internet connection. IntelliMax
Agent does not collect patient data.
IntelliMax Enterprise is used for the analysis of data collected by IntelliMax Agent, and is also used
to administer IntelliMax Connect sessions to connected Elekta products. Approved users can get
access to IntelliMax Enterprise through a web-based interface.
3.3.5 Treatment planning

Treatment planning systems include:
• XiO®
• Monaco®
• ERGO++
• Oncentra
A treatment planning system is used to create prescriptions for patient treatment.
It is necessary to connect the treatment planning system to the hospital network.

department. Available accessories include:

• Electron applicators

• Stereotactic beam-shaping

– Stereotactic cones
– QA system
• Patient position
– Active Breathing Coordinator™

– Sentinel™
– Patient position, immobilization and table extensions.
When you design the treatment suite, the only accessories that you must plan for are:
• Active Breathing Coordinator™
• Apex™
• BodyFIX®
• Sentinel™
For Active Breathing Coordinator™ or Apex™, the control room must have a computer and
workstation.
For BodyFIX®, the treatment room must have a dedicated mobile vacuum pump trolley.
For Sentinel™, the control room must have a computer and workstation. The treatment room must
have the Sentinel™ camera, which is installed on the ceiling.
