The Differences Between Traditional Market and Modern Supermarket

For getting daily needs, we will go to market because it sells many kinds of our needs. We can
find food, clothes, electronics, or anything there. There are many market choices around us we can
choose such as traditional market, mini market, or supermarket. They may have different situation,
service, price, quality, and quantity. Here are two photographs of markets. One is Citra Maja Market
photograph in Banten from Citra Maja Raya’s website. The other one is The Great American
Supermarket photograph by Ronald Saari. In both photographs, we can see many things that market
sells, but the arrangement of the two are completely different.
In Citra Maja Market photograph, we can see untidy arrangement, dirty floor, and many
consumers. There are many grocers there, they have small place for organizing their products. Some
of them sell vegetables, and the others sell fruits. They just place vegetables and fruits on the tables
and shelfs because there is no fridge there. The market does not provide cart or basket for consumers
to put their goods inside because this market does not have cashier, consumers pay to grocers. Beside
that, we can see there are many consumers there. Unfortunately, the floor is dirty so consumers look
not so comfortable to shop. Maybe this condition indicates that this market is for low-to-middle

comfortable to shop. Maybe this condition indicates that this market is for low-to-middle market
segment or grocers and costumers do not care about the hygiene.
In The Great American Supermarket photograph, we see tidy arrangement, clean floor, and
few consumers. This supermarket’s management arrange their products such as vegetables and fruits
in shelfs and fridges well so consumers can find products they want easily. This supermarket provides
carts for consumers so they can put their groceries inside before they pay in cashier. Beside that, this
supermarket’s management looks caring about the hygiene. But, there are just few consumers there. It
suggests that this supermarket is for middle-to-high market segment.
In first photograph, untidy arrangement and dirty floor show grocers do not care enough about
the hygiene. It shows that the market is for low-to-middle market segment. Maybe grocers think that
if they sell products in lower price, many consumers will come and buy although the hygiene is not
good enough so grocers do not need to care about the hygiene. Even though, if grocers care about the
hygiene and clean the floor, they will also feel comfortable to sell their products there along the day.
In second photograph, tidy arrangement and clean floor show the supermarket’s management care
about the hygiene so consumers feel comfortable. Consumers pay not only for goods they buy, but
they also pay for the service, facilities, and good experiences of shopping. This is the reason why
supermarket sells pricey goods, it offers convenience for consumers too. If the supermarket’s
management do not maintain the facilities or give a good service, supermarket will lose consumers
because consumers will think supermarket offers more expensive products without care about
consumers’ convenience and it makes there is no different between supermarket and traditional
market.
From those photograph, Citra Maja Market and The Great American Supermarket have
different arrangement because maybe they have different market segment. Citra Maja Market offers
cheaper products than The Great American Supermarket for attracting low-to-middle market segment
to shop there, while The Great American Supermarket offers more expensive products than Citra
Maja Market so consumers will get better service, facilities, and shopping experiences because
consumers from middle-to-high market segment want them. I hope in the future, grocers in traditional
market care about consumers’ convenience so low-to-middle consumers can get convenience and
