Facebook, Twitter central to UM journalism course

Beginning next semester, jour-
nalism students can take a course
that will teach them how to be bet-
ter reporters — in 140 characters
or fewer.

ute their stories to maximize their
reach.
They will also learn to interact
with sources and potential employ-
ers, build a web audience and
study how the media are changing
the face of journalism.
Brown-Smith said the use of
social media is becoming crucial
to the status updates posted by
Sarah Palin, former governor of
Alaska and 2008 Republican vice-
presidential nominee. On ESPN’s
show “SportsNation,” social media
are used to engage viewers with
polls conducted through Twitter
and Facebook.
