INTRUDUCTION

This proyect is going to talk about


the gothic style in the architecture,
painting and sculpture.
There are some examples of each
type of art and characteristics of
them
ORIGINS OF THE
GOTHIC STYLE

In Europe, during the Middle Ages, a new


style showed up; the Gothic style.

It appears between the years 1137 and 1144,


when the reconstruction of the choir of the
abbey of Saint-Denis began and finished.
The new style was completly diferent from the
traditional Romanesque style of the churches in
that time.
Gothic architecture

The gothic architecture is characterized


by 5 keys:
- Large stained glass window
- Pointed arches
- Ribbed vaults
- Flying buttresses
- Ornate decoration

Gothic architecture was normally used


in the cathedrals and churches. Its are
characteristics for their large colored
glasses, pointed arches in the entrance,
overloaded ornaments and oculus a
window with form of flowers sculped on
the walls .
An example of Gothic architecture in
Spain is The Cathedral of Santa María
de Sevilla, that is the catedral with
the largest área in the world.

Gothic Painting

The figures in the gothic style were


more animated in facial expression,
and smallers in relation of the
background. Also the horror-vacui
desappeared.

The paintings were often made in:


- Frescoes
- Panel paintings
- Stained glass
- Manuscripts and printmakings

Apart from this techniques, they also


painted on canvas with oils, but it didn’t
become famous until the 15th century

Gothic sculpture

The gothic statues show an


elegant but exaggerated columnar
elongation, but the statues that
are in the portals are more natural
and have a growing detachment
of the wall behind.
In the cathedrals, the statues ere
normally gargoyles, that serve as a
drain, while others says that its
protected the cathedrals from
damages.
