humans helping measure  Individual rulers
 Why are certain physical characteristics so their partner to and long rulers
different? compare data
Lesson Procedure Assessment
1. Intro: Establish a basis with students on how they should use a  Chimp
ruler to measure. handout
o where do you place the beginning of your
measurement? Ruler edge or under the zero?
o How to count and accurately measure (ex. 4.2 eraser,
10.5 pencil)
2. Inform students that this math lesson will have a theme of
chimpanzees. Discuss what they are for students who don’t
know.
3. Watch a trailer for the chimp movie so students have a
stronger idea of what these animals are.
4. As a class they will go through a workbook working in
partners they will begin by individually drawing their hand and
compare it to a chimps then their foot by tracing around their
sock foot students can try to measure to compare how big the
size difference is practicing using a ruler
5. Once students are done that as a class we will read the page
looking at chimpanzees (and their adaptation)
o This will lead to a discussion on the physical
similarities of chimps to humans (standing up?, vision,
brains, hands, feet, hair)
 How did your hands compare to the
chimpanzees?
 Why do their feet look so different from yours?
What purpose could this shape have?
o What is height? What is wing span?
o What is a humans wing span usually around? Compare
your height to your own wing span
o Talk about how chimps wing span is 1 ½ x its height
WHY is that?
 It’s an adaptation! Allows chimps to be able to
swing from branches and move around the
jungle
6. If students finish before the class is over we will read a picture
book about Jane Goodall “The Watcher”
7. Maybe cross connect if there’s time with social studies and
natural resources what are some resources these chimps rely
on and how they adapted to use it.
