EXPERIMENT No. 3
FREQUENCY CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LINE

PROBLEM/OBJECTIVE
 Measure the cut-off frequency for the coaxial line provided on the DL 2597.
THEORY:
When the frequency of the input signals increases, the line attenuation due to both the
ohmic resistance R’ and the conductance C progressively increases because of the so-called
“skin effect”. Starting from a given frequency onwards, the line attenuation quickly increases.
The “cut-off frequency” of the line is defined as the frequency value at which the attenuation
reaches the value of 3 dB compared to the low-frequency attenuation value.

MATERIALS AND SET-UP:

The required components, instruments and accessories are:

DL 2597 Trainer
Function Generator

Oscilloscope

Connecting cables and cords

METHODOLOGY:
After gathering all the necessary materials and equipment needed in the experiment, the
circuit is shown at Figure 4 to be used to perform the test. All the connections shown in the
circuit have their significance and followed a certain standard. The test consists in scanning a
wide frequency range, for instance from 100kHz, 1MHz, 2MHz, 3MHz and 4MHz, with suitable
amplitude steps, measuring the attenuation in the different measurement points selected. The
input signal is set to 2V peak-to-peak all throughout the experiment. The data gathered is put in
tabular form and by using this data, the cut-off frequency of the line can be inferred. This is
reduced by 3dB compared to the value measured at 10kHz.

DATA AND RESULTS:

Frequency Output

100 kHz

1 MHz
2 MHz

3 MHz

4 MHz

ANALYSIS OF DATA:
After performing the experiment, the group distinguished that when the frequency goes
higher the waveform gets smaller.

CONCLUSION:
The group concluded that as the input frequency increases, the cut-off frequency also
added up as well as the attenuation. To sum it up, the group was able to measure the cut-off
frequency for the coaxial line provided on the DL 2597.
