Before I distribute a copy of
the poem, let us first know (The teacher will flash on the projector

All: Diplomat Listening to the Speech of
Another Diplomat by Dominador I. Ilio
ma’am.
Diplomat listening to the Speech of
Another Diplomat
By: Dominador I. Ilio

They cannot go to the summer sea this

year
Where on the boardwalk, in no more
than shorts
And bare feet, he can toss platitudes
Without much mind to the next fellow,
perhaps
Or to his nervous wife all ears beside
him
And watch the silly antics of the children
Long unloved in the carefree stretch of
sand
Or, perhaps, with anonymous paunch
and goggles
Foolishly try to execute a handstand
In wrist-deep water, and make it
Though with much awkward kicking in
air
It will be fun there in the summer sea

But with this, he cannot hint a word

To the little woman. His hands are firmly
chained
To bulky paper-weights on his polished
desk
And his nights will be crammed with not
merely silence.
It shall need greater diplomacy, though
To tell the children why they cannot go
Than to answer back this shrill-voiced
speaker, O,
These talks shall drag on many long
seasons yet.

f. Discussion
This poem is an example of 1. It is an example of a narrative
what kind of poetry? poetry ma’am.

That’s right! It is a narrative

poetry that tells a story.
Narrative poems have a
special appeal. they present
dramatic events vividly, using
some of the elements as short
stories such as plot, characters
and even dialogue.
a. Recalling
Where do you think does the 1. Maybe, inside their house ma’am.
events in this poem took 2. Or maybe inside the father’s office
place? ma’am.

1. The children on the summer sea.

What do you think does the 2. The children having fun on the
first stanza represent? beach.

Where does the father’s hand 1. To bulky paper-weight on his

firmly chained? polished desk.
2. To his polished desk.

b. Interpreting
What does the phrase “His
hands are firmly chained to
bulky paper-weight on his 1. He cannot leave his work ma’am.
polished desk” means? 2. He’s busy with his work ma’am.

How would you describe the

situation between the father (Student’s answer varies)
and the children?

What can you say about the 1. It’s happy at first ma’am with a
poem’s overall mood? futuristic imagination but it becomes
sad later on.
2. It’s sad ma’am.

g. Applying
The poet Dominador I. Ilio
included the phrase “It shall
need greater diplomacy,
though, to tell the children
why they cannot go.” What 1. That he will need to have a great
does he mean by this? skill or sense of sensitivity to tell his
children why they cannot go this
time to the summer sea.

Do you think the narrator

meant that the father was able 1. No ma’am.
to tell his children this? 2. Yes, ma’am because in the last line,
it says that “O, these talks shall drag
on many long seasons yet,” in which
I think the children will talk about it
the whole year.

IV. Generalization
Based on the poem presented,
what do you think is the major
theme?
1. It may somehow coincide with the
quote “In order to say yes to your
priorities, you have to be willing to
say no to something else.”
2. It can also be “No one is too busy,
it’s just a matter of priority,” ma’am.
a. Infusion of Values
There are a lot of ways on how
we handle our priorities. There
are those who do it at the
same time, but also, we
cannot really blame those who
says no to the other to be able
to say yes to other. If you were
the father, will you sacrifice
your work to be with your
family when, in the first place
you chose to be in this job?
And as a student, have you
been in this situation where
your vacation was canceled
due to unavoidable
circumstances?

(Student’s answer may vary.)

you to group yourselves into
four groups. Count off from 1
to 4 and form your groups
according to your number.

you are assigned to do. I will
