5 LOG COLLECTION FOR TROUBLESHOOTING

The purpose of this chapter is to describe the actions needed before and after WBTS software
upgrade to ensure smooth troubleshooting if upgrade fails for any reason. More information can be
found from WCDMA and Netact Operating Documentation sets in NOLS/PIC to carry out needed
steps below. In possible fault situations please include below logs and information to NCT ticket.

5.1 Before BTS software upgrade

Preventive actions need to be done in order to make troubleshooting possible afterwards, see steps
below:
1. Collect and save BTS Snapshots from different configurations (e.g. from one cluster).
2. Collect and save both active and passive SW versions info from network.
3. Save active SCFs (System Configuration File) as backups.

5.2 After BTS software upgrade

Following actions to be done after Software Upgrade and activation if the upgrade fails for any
reason, see steps below:
1. Logs and BTS Snapshot to be collected as fast as possible. Two weeks BTS alarm history to
be collected at Netact or RNC.

6 INSTALLING AND LAUNCHING BTS SITE MANAGER

6.1 Installing WCDMA BTS Site Manager

WCDMA BTS is managed with BTS Site Manager. The BTS Site Manager covers managing of
the both partitions, BTS and TRS.

SW release delivery includes three installation applications for BTS SW manager; One for
Windows and two for Linux (32- and 64-bit variants).

1. You should be familiar with installing software onto your PC and managing files in it.
In order to set up and install the BTS Site Manager, you need to have an internet
connection available to download the BTS Site Manager Installation file from NOLS (Nokia

Case 2: BTS has no connection to NetAct
The SW upgrade can be done with BTS Site Manager as described in the following chapter.

7.1 SW upgrade steps with BTS Site Manager

1. Click Connect button (‘Local’ for IP address)

BTS Site Manager warns about incompatible software version. You can proceed to update
WCDMA SW by clicking the Update SW button. Only the SW update functionality is
available in BTS Site Manager until WCDMA SW is activated.
2. Click the Update SW button

The Update SW to BTS Site dialog box will be opened. If LTE Site Manager is in use,
choose the Software → Update SW to BTS Site menu item to open the Update SW to BTS
Site dialog box.
3. Click the Select File button - To locate the master file containing the new software.

- The Select Build Descriptor dialog box opens.

- Locate and select the master file (TargetBD.xml or BTS SW package zip file), and click
the Open button. If you select the zip file, the files will be decompressed when you click
Open.
- The Select Build Descriptor dialog box closes and the new SW version is displayed in
the Update SW to BTS Site dialog box.

4. Select the Activate SW After Update check box - To enable the activation of the new
software in accordance with SW updating.

If you do not want to activate the new software at the same time with updating it, you can
leave the option unchecked, and the SW is downloaded to the BTS site in the background
only. To activate the SW later with Activate SW After Update selected, you have to perform
the SW update again.

5. Click the Update button

- The Update Progress steps show the transfer status of files. DL time depends on DCN
and amount of downloaded data.
- Wait for the SW update complete notification. If the Activate SW After Update check
box was selected, the SW will be activated and the site will be reset.

If the SW download fails, update the software again

If you want to view information on the SW download, click the View Report button. The
Software Update Report dialog box opens.

6. Click the Close button - To close the dialog box.

7.2 Fallback to previous SW release

In case of problems with the new SW release, a SW fallback to previous SW release can be
performed. SW fallback is done via normal SW download and activation procedure.

Fallback aspect has been in detail described in WCDMA RAN System Upgrade document, a
part of the Operating Documentation.

8 OPERATIONAL HINTS

8.1 The M5006C72 counter shows wrong values

The counter M5006C72 shows wrong values. For example, when 32 HS-RACH users are setup
to one cell, the counter shows value 31 instead of 32. Also, when 80 HS-RACH users are setup
to LCG, the counter can show bigger values than 80 (which is the maximum HS-RACH user
amount to one LCG). The issue affects the M5006C72 counter only. There is no impact on the
services provided to operator or end user, neither quality of service is impacted.

9 ADDITIONAL SECURITY ENHANCEMENT

Feature (RAN2423, SW verification Agent) enhances the security of the software downloaded
and activated. Secure boot enforces the verification and execution of trusted software. The
software that verifies the integrity of the executable software is called Software Verification
Agent.

Before the software update, the software-update packages are downloaded using secure file
transfer method and stored securely in the network element. The network element calculates
hash value of the software, signs the hash, and stores it together with the software package.

With the hard security enabled, the BTS executes only verified software. The hash value of the
software package is calculated again and compared with the stored and signed hash value. If
the hash values match, the software is executed. If the verification of software package fails in
SW activation phase, activation is stopped and alarm is raised. If the verification of software
package fails in BTS startup, SW fallback is executed and BTS verifies the fallback software
package.

10 WCDMA BTS LICENSE FREE PERIOD

When a new BTS site is taken into use, the BTS can be commissioned at the site directly to its
definitive operating configuration and features and download the required licenses remotely
later on.

License management late activation enables the use of all licensed features without license
restrictions for 14 days, starting from SW upgrade and establishing connection to the NTP
server.

If the 14 days trial period has been exceeded, still the O&M remote connection to a BTS can be
maintained and LKs can be imported to BTS via NetAct License management or via BTS Site
Manager.

11 OPERATING DOCUMENTATION

BTS Site Manager has an online help system available through the Help menu and from the
software as context-sensitive Help. The Online Help is available for browsing in the Task
Selection view opened after launch of BTS Site Manager.

More detailed instructions for installing and launching BTS Site Manager SW see WCDMA 18
Operating Documentation in NOLS.

Summary of the original problem:
M5000330 decrease after SW upgrade.

How end user/operator could detect the problem:

Problem could be detected from KPI report.

Description of the fault:

There is a difference in the implementation of M5000330 between WBTS16 and WBTS18. In WTBTS16,
M5000330 considered those DC-HSDPA users with data in at least one of their priority queues (either
SRB or DRB). On the other hand, in WTBTS18, M5000330 considered those DC-HSDPA users with
data in at least one of their priority queues (in this case only DRB) which causes the counter to decrease
since it does not consider SRB priority queues.

Valid for Product(s):

Reason for the Change Note:
Change 1: (CAS-145890-Y1J4,PR362297)
Summary of the original problem:
Fault 4257 is raised in RF module after WBTS upgrade.

How end user/operator could detect the problem:

Fault 4257 is raised.

Description of the fault:

Peer SM was detected in RF's port 3 first then in port 2. The chain validation was performed right after
peer SM was detected on port 3. This resulted in fault 4257 being raised by BBC.

Dependency on configuration:
RF Sharing setup.

Faulty component and version:

WBTS18

Faulty component first delivered in(e.g. release, CD):

WBTS17

Impact to End-User:
No service on affected cells.

Impact to Operator:
RF module is faulty, cells are not operational.

Workaround:
None.

Description of the correction:

FSMr2:
Add Peer SM to the number of nodes expected to be detected on the chain. This will make BBC wait for
the Peer SM to be detected before performing Topology Validation. Add a check that the Peer SM was
indeed detected late before performing chain validation right after Peer SM detection. This will prevent
the case where chain was validated before BBC was able to detect the whole chain topology.

FSMr3:
Chain shouldn't be considered as detected if physical link between shared RF and Peer SM is not in
topology. This will make BBC wait for the Peer SM to be detected behind shared RF before performing
Topology Validation. Add a check that the Peer SM was indeed detected late before performing chain
validation right after Peer SM detection. This will prevent the case where chain was validated before
BBC was able to detect the whole chain topology.
