Bios 1030 Writing Assignment #2: Benefits of Breathing: Beyond the Obvious

10 Point Assignment
1. Use lecture material and the information in the articles, “Meditation’s Calming Effects Pinpointed in the Brain” by Diana Kwon and,
“Where’s the Proof that Mindfulness Meditation Works?” to respond to the following prompt.
Prompt: Breathing is obviously important to your daily (or minute-by-minute) survival. Additionally, ancient practices and recent
research both indicate that regular controlled breathing exercises have many lasting psychological and potentially physiological
benefits. In this writing assignment I want you to demonstrate your knowledge of breathing physiology and your ability to
synthesize information from two different articles, forming an opinion about implementation of controlled breathing exercises in
an academic setting.
2. Your response should be a total of 2 paragraphs. A paragraph should be 5-7 sentences long (or longer is OK). If citations are used, the
style doesn’t matter (e.g. APA, MLA, etc) but you must choose one and stay consistent with your format.
a. Paragraph 1 (the “facts” paragraph) – (1) Explain how the breathing rate is controlled (2) Compare and contrast the sinoatrial
node, which controls heart rate and the area of the brain that controls breathing rate (i.e. pre-Bӧtzinger complex/breathing
control center) (3) Lastly, explain the potential benefits to controlled breathing exercises, focusing on those that would be
beneficial to a college student.
b. Paragraph 2 (the “opinion” paragraph) – Given the information that was presented in these two articles and class, are you
considering adding controlled breathing exercises to your daily routine? Would you appreciate it as a helpful daily exercise in the
classroom? Why or why not?
