transformer of the Vietnal Songhau.

3. RELAY SETTING CRITERIA

3.1 EXCITATION TRANSFORMER PROTECTION

GE digital protection relay SR345 provide excitation transformer protecion. The SR345 has one diff-
erential(87T/87I) element, one instantaneous overcurrent (50) element as backup protection for primary winding
phase fault, two time overcurrent (51) element as backup protection for the transforemer.

The 87T should protect transformer internal fault when fault current is bigger than minimum differential pickup
current. The setting of minimum differential pickup (87T) should be considered CT mismatch, relay error(5%),
safety margin (5%) and NLTC tolerance(5%). The instantaneous differential (87I) does not have to operate during
transformer inrush condition and external fault current. The pickup of 87I could be set to 150% of the Inrush current
of the transformer to prevent misoperation.

The Phase IOC (50) does not have to operate during transformer inrush condition and external fault current which
is three phase fault current of transformer secondary. The IOC would detect minimum phase fault current of excitation
primary winding.

The Phase TOC (51) must protect phase fault and overload of excitation transforemr. The pickup is set to 150% of the
rated current of excitation transformer. This will provide overload and short circuit protection for the transformer.

Reference winding of SR345 is determined winding 1 by the manual

Accordingly, CT ratio 400A is designated as 1PU, which is based on the setting of pick up current for
percent differential.
Calculation of the Magnitude Compensation Factor[M] :
Primary CT Ratio × Rated Voltage
Formula : M=
Primary CT Ratio[REF] × Rated Voltage[REF]
In case of performing winding calculation respectively, Magnitude Compensation Factor for the protective
relay of SR345 is applicable up to 16.

Description 22.00 kV (HV Side) 0.95 kV (LV Side)

Magnitude 400 × 22 6000 × 0.95
Compensation 400 × 22 400 × 22
Factor = 1.00 = 0.65
It is OK. Because M.F is not more than 32 in accordance with the above calculation resulting.
C. Setting of Protection Relays
1) Excitation Transformer Percent Differential(87UT)
A) Percent Differenital Function : Enabled
B) Percent Differenital Pickup : 0.23 × CT
• At the worst case of CT ratio error, CT ratio mismatch ( +10%, -10% )
• In × (±10%) × (Compensation Factor) / Primary CT Ratio

Winding Formula Result(PU) Mismatch

170.6 × 1.1 × 1.00
I 22.00kV 0.47 0.47 - 0.39
400
3950.3 × 0.9 × 0.65
I 1.0kV 0.39 = 0.08
6000
• CT Mismatch + 5% (Relay Error) + 5% (NLTC) + 5% (Margin) = 0.08 + 0.05 + 0.05
+ 0.05 = 0.23×CT
Accordingly, Set to 0.23×CT
C) Percent Differenital Slope1 : 50 %
• Differential Current (Id) = 0.23
• Restraint Current(Ir) = 0.47
0.23
• Slope 1 Setting (Id/Ir) × 100 = × 100 = 48.9 %
0.47
• Slope 1 = (Id/Ir)% + Safety Margin
Accordingly, Set to 50%

8 of 14
PROTECTION CALCULATIONS AND SETTINGS Rev No : 0

D) Percent Differenital Break 1 : 2.00 × CT

- The fastest CT’s saturation point of CTs connected should be set less than 20%.
• CT starts to saturat at 20 times of CT Primary Current.
• Break Point 1 = 20PU × 0.2 = 4.00
Accordingly, Set to 2.00(relay setting range 1.000 ~ 2.000)
E) Percent Differenital Break 2 : 6.00 × CT
- Criteria : Settings are applied as residual flux of 70%
( 100 - 70 )
• Break Point 2 = × 20 = 6.00
100
Accordingly, Set to 6.00
F) Percent Differenital Slope 2 : 98 %
- Relay Maker’s recommendation value (95~98%)
G) Inrush Inhibit Function : 2nd Harm Block
- In case, the 2nd harmonic of excitation inrush current on the transformer is more than the permissible
level, then the trip is inhibited.
H) Inrush Inhibit Level : 15%
- Set to the recommendation value(20%) of the Relay Manufacturer. But recently measured ratio of
the 2nd harmonic to less than 20%. But, a setting of 15% provides a good margin of security for
energization of the transformer where the second harmonic current may fall to low levels.
The belief is these settings will also successfully restrain the differential element when faces with
a fault recovery magnetizing inrush event.
Accordingly, Set to 15%
I) Inrush Inhibit Mode : Average
- The relay first calculates the average 2nd harmonic ratio, then applies the inrush threshold to the
calculated average. This mode works only in conjunction with the traditional 2nd harmonic function.
J) Overexcitation Inhibit Function : 5th
- In case of over-excitation differential relay should be blocked after detecting the 5th harmonic
component.
K) Overexcitation Inhibit Level : 20%
- This setting is provided to block the differential protection during overexcitation. When the 5th
harmonic level exceeds the specified setting (5th harmonic ratio) the differential element is blocked.
The overexcitation inhibit works on a per-phase basis.

2) Excitation Transformer Instantaneous Differential(87I)

A) Instantaneous Differenital Function : Enabled
B) Instantaneous Differenital Pickup : 6.40 × CT
- Criteria : Should not be operated from Inrush current of the transformer.
- The Inrush current of Transformer's
• Set to 150% of the Inrush current of the Transformer
Inrush Currnet : 1706A (Assume to the 10 times of rated current)

Pickup = Inrush current × 1.5 ×
Ref. CT
( 22.00 ÷ 22.00 )
= 1706.0 × 1.5 × = 6.40 ×CT

Thus, Set to 6.40PU

3) Phase Instantaneous Overcurrent Setting(50)

A) Phase IOC1 Function : Enabled
B) Phase IOC1 CT Input : W1
C) Phase IOC1 Pickup : 14.30 × CT
- Criteria : Should not be operated from Inrush current of the transformer.
- The Inrush current of Transformer's
Inrush Currnet : 1706A (Assume to the 10 times of rated current)
• Set to 150% of the Inrush current of the Transformer

Pickup = Inrush current × 1.5 ×
Primary CT
