Lesson Idea

Title: Applying Properties of Integer Exponents

Grade Level: 8th Grade
Content: Mathematics
Standard Addressed: MGSE8.EE.1 Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to
generate equivalent numerical expressions.
Amount of Time: 1 week

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Constructor

SMAR Level: Redefinition

Essential Question(s): How do I simplify and evaluate numeric expressions involving integer
exponents?
Learning Activity:

• Introduction: Students will watch and answer the questions within the Edpuzzle video that
was created by the instructor on the topic of integer exponents. The students will then do
additional research on the topic of integer exponents individually. Once they have gathered
all of the information they will need, and completely understand the topic, they will
individually make their own instructional video about the mathematical concept using a
video creation tool.
• Instruction/Activities: Students will use the research they gathered, as well as, the notes
they gathered while watching the Edpuzzle video, and create their own instructional video
about integer exponents using a video creation tool. Students must include the following in
their videos: music, imagery, 3-4 problems where the properties of integer exponents are
applied to generate equivalent numerical expressions, and the video must be at least 3
minutes in length.
• Final Product: Students will submit their videos to their instructor through email, flash
drive, and/or shareable link.
• Evaluation or deliverable: Once the students have submitted their videos, the instructor
will assess each student’s video on the following: music is used throughout the video, the
video is at least 3 minutes in length, imagery is included, creativity it evident, and 3-4
problems are provided and worked out correctly.
Reflective Practice
In my opinion, one way that I could enhance the lesson idea above is have the students present
their videos to the class once they have been graded for accuracy. This would allow the
students to have a sense of publication of their work. Also, it will allow the whole class to
review the mathematical concept that we are learning. By the students creating their own

video they are already participating in the highest level of Bloom’s Taxonomy. So, I do not
believe there is anything that can be added at this time to extend the activity to a higher
Bloom’s level. This project can be published to share with people outside of the classroom by
posting the videos on the classroom blog. By posting these videos, the students can feel the
accomplishment of publishing their work, and the students have the opportunity to access
multiple instructional videos on the mathematical concept. This would be a wonderful way for
students to get extra practice applying the properties of integer exponents to generate
equivalent numerical expressions.
